WOW you must have really strong allergies as yorkie are far from having the same coat as other dogs...they are closer to our hair then anything else. Are you sure it is your baby and not something different you have been doing?? I really don't know what you can do, GO CRAZY ON BENADRYL??? lol jk I really hope you find the cause of this it would be sad losing your baby over this?? Good Luck!!:animal36 |
How old is your Yorkie and is your dog a purebred Yorkshire Terrier? If you think you so, are you absolutely sure? I only ask because Yorkies do not have fur like other dogs and very seldom cause allergy problems. It is rare if they do. |
Try Zyrtec Zyrtec is an over the counter antihistamine that is taken only once daily. I take it at bedtime, it doesn't cause daytime fatigue and works wonders for my allergies. If that doesn't help, you may want to consider seeing an allergist. BTW, it is often dander, not fur, that causes the allergic reaction. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
1st of all calm down. Yorkies are hypoallergenic and while they still shed some dander, not enough to make anyone with a slight dog allergy suffer. However, your puppies dander may not be what is causing your allergies. You may be allergic to any product that has been applied on your puppy's fur. For example. I always thought I was allergic to my mother in law's poodle... I would get so itchy, get runny eyes and nose, and sneeze like crazy. Poodles are also hypoallergenic dogs so I had the allergist run an allergy test on me. I am not allergic to dogs, however I am allergic to dust and dust mites which can be on her fur. I did discover later when I used my MIL's shampoo to bathe our puppy that I am deathly allergic to that stuff! I actually got hives from where it came in contact with me. I have also heard of people being allergic to Frontline and Advantage - so, try to eliminate your possibilities. Do you have an allergist who could maybe test you? Good luck! |

A few things you can do, is not allow your new puppy to sleep in your bedroom. Wash your hands after petting him. Keep your house very clean. Buy an air purifyer. If none of that helps, talk to your doctor. Good Luck! |
Maybe it's your Yorkie's shampoo or conditioner? Try a non-scented shampoo/conditioner, maybe that will help. |
What kind of reaction are you having. If you are having hives it could be from their saliva. I am allergic to my sister's dog saliva. The allergist told me I am not allergic to dogs, but that I am allergic to some dog's saliva. He also said that it might not be breed specific. That it just depends on the dander and stuff from his mouth. He said that cats lick themselves more and get their saliva on their fur where dogs don't do this as much. I guess that is why I am deathly allergic to cats but not dogs. So if he is licking you a lot and you are getting hives, it could just be as simple as not letting him lick you:animal36 |
I have had one person who purchased a puppy from me last year that was very allergic to her puppy. She ended up in the hospital with a severe asthma attack and she is highly allergic to dogs. Her allergist has tested her and it is the proteins that the dog excretes in its saliva. I took the puppy back and refunded the money to her. She had told me she grew up allergic to dogs and cats and was happy that yorkies are hypoallergenic. I told her then that no dog is 100 percent hypoallergenic and to give it a try. It proved to be one of the 10 percent or so of allergic people that react strongly to the saliva. She had to get her house cleaned and do all the linens etc that the puppy had mouthed. SO if that is your allergic reactions there is not much you can do but return the puppy. However if it is just the allergic rhinitis type (water eyes, itchy ears, runny nose, itchy eyes) and you want to take Zyrtec that may work. But remember it may be for life and those meds are not cheap. Sorry |
Try a chamomile tea rinse or just wipe him down with a cloth soaked in chamomile tea, it deactivates allergens. |
I totally agree with many others here. I thought I was becoming allergic to Maddy, but it turned out to be a new detangler we bought and that the pollen was just worst for a few weeks. Getting my Flonase (nasal spray helped a lot). |
How are you making out now? an update would be great! |
Please all of you who have pet allergies, try the chamomile tea. It is safe and non-toxic for your pet and healthier for you then allergy meds. I use it and it works wonderfully. |
Strong allergies is what i'm thinking too. I have some pretty bad allergies during the summer months and Ella doesn't make them act up a bit. Yorkies are supposed to be one of the most hypoallergenic dogs because of their human like hair. It's very strange that your allergic to your baby. I hope things get better so you can keep him. =] |

I have had my pup for 1 month now. The symptoms seem to be staying pretty much the same: itchy throat, runny nose, headache-no hives or asthma. I am toweling him off 1/day with a wet rag, washing him in a shampoo (that doesn't have perfumes, irritants, etc.) 1/week. I wear a mask when I clean the room where his crate stays. He is not allowed in bedrooms. I take claritin every day and some homeopathic drops for pet dander that I purchased at the health food store(they actually do help some). I hate being allergic to my dog! It is sad.:( Does anyone know if allergy shots work? |
thanks for your post! Do you just purchase reg. cham. tea, brew it, then wash the yorkie in it? |

I'm pretty sure it's not your yorkie unless you don't have a purebred and its mixed with some shedding breed. Good Luck though! |
It sucks that you are allergic but I feel your pain. I am also allergic but to dog's saliva. I had minor allergic reaction to the 2 year old female yorkie after she was sleeping in bed with me. Then afterward I got Samy and he is not allowed to sleep with us in the bedroom. He has his own room next to ours so he is only a door away. We let him in bed on the weekends but not under the covers and I always make sure to wear something on me when hugging him. I also wash my hands but I do not overwash. He licks me all over the face but so far I have not experienced any allergies. Just basically keep your house clean, your dog clean, and your bed clean ... But if you are allergic to something else other than the dog's saliva, the posts above are very helpful. Also, you can get allergy shots I think 3 times in your life and be done with any sort of dog allergies. I might do this later if my allergies reappear. Good luck! |
Allergy shots do work.. they were recommended by my doctor but I have not taken them yet as I live outside Canada now.. when I am back will most likely take them if my allergies reappear. Consult with a doctor and get the shots.. Let us know if it works out! |
Rocky gives me allergies sometimes too, it got a bit worse over time and only when he kisses my nose. I take Allegra D sometimes when its bad. But I don't mind that much. I would cut my own head off before I give my Yorkie away due to allergies. Claritin is over the counter, try it, see how it works. Bottom line, go to a doctor, they will run allergy tests, very simple, and will tell you what exactly you are allergic to. In my case, I am very allergic to dust, cats, and at last dogs, but dogs the least in my case. Good luck. |

Another good point was mentioned here and that is about products we use on our dogs. Not only can we get an allergic reaction to them, so can the dog. I darn near lost a show girl about 7 years ago because of a new dematting spray I was using. i suspect it was the cedar oil in it, I hadn't read the label. Cedar Oil is bad, I won't use products that have it in it. |
Thank you so much. |

Does anyone know if allergy shots work? They did for me, but it was a three year program, LOT of shots.:( |

I have allergies although I am only slightly allergic to dogs. Mold and cats are my main enemies. LOL Then everything else down from that. It is very true that dogs and that includes yorkies are not allergy free. They are less because they do not shed and have less dander, but still not allergy free. I do get the shots although they will NOT make you not allergic to dogs. I was told that the they are different and they have not made it so you will be "cured" from a dog allergy although cats will improve greatly to be around. I also take Allegra as all over the counter meds make me tired and those work very well! I will sometimes have a problem and I do have to make sure the dogs are bathed every two weeks tops (but hey you want them nice and shiny anyway). When you are around an allergen every day (only if it is not health threatening or anything) you will build up to it adventually. This is the same as the shots that they are actually injecting me with the stuff I am allegic to! When I get around other dogs my allergies go crazy so I do have to double up on my allergy meds when I go to meet ups or anything like that as I have no immune system built up to that dog. Hope that might help and give you hope!! |
