Why does Holly torture me My bed is very high and she cant jump up so I have to put her on the bed but she will cry and whine and I put my hands down to lift her up and she backs away. So I pull my hands back closer to me so she will come closer and I can grab her, no way. She looks at my hands (her current favorite chew toy) as if she doesnt know what they are. She also doesnt come to me when I call her and she is outside. She has to be "rounded up". She doesnt get to go outside anymore now. Is she stubborn or dare I say, just stupid? I got so irritated with her backing up and running away that I put her outside the bedroom and shut the door. I have never hurt her in any way so there is no reason to be scared of me. She is my little sweetie and I adore her. Am I doomed to attend pet obedience classes? Im not real social and I dont think I can do that. |
I'm not sure why they do that but my Shelby rae is 9 and she still does the backing up and running..and she is the most pampered little girl she's never been abused and I've had her since she was about 8 wks old ...i thought maybe it was insecurity because they took her from her mom too early...but I;m sure some of the more knowledgable members will shed some insight just wanted you to know that you are not alone...also I think she is just stubborn definitely not stupid there is no such thing as a stupid yorkie.:) |
lol I know she isnt stupid but it just confounds me that she does that. Then as Im bent over, hands down sweet talking her she is looking over her shoulder, eyes huge and looking so scared. My son does like to roar at her and then chase her down the hall, ahem, he is 13 and full of testosterone and knows this makes me angry but does it anyway. But why me? She sleeps next to me when Im on the computer, follows me where ever I go, sleeps on me when she can. She is never dropped or even put down on the floor roughly, even by my son. I have had her since she was 4 weeks old. Not my choice, she was given to me after the first person who was supposed to have her didnt want her. I know the breeder lied. Holly was no way 8 weeks old. I know what you mean it is very frustrating...I wish I knew how to get shelby rae to stop doing it...she does the same thing follows me everywhere, sleeps with me and everything...oh well she's still the love of my life! |

It seems like alot of Yorkies play the *you can't catch me!* game, so I wouldn't take it personally. I have two yorkies. Missy totally ducks away when I try to pick her up and never comes when called, but Dora comes to me every, single time I say her name and is always eager to be picked up. If anyone should not listen it's Dora, because she's still a puppy! I've raised them exactly the same, both are treated like gold. All I can guess is that it's a part of their personality. |
You Can't Catch Me! Bella does this, too! My husband has been working on the command, "I'm going to pick you up". He says it now and she turns sideways and lets him pick her up almost EVERY time. She is not as consistent with me. I know our little girl DOES not like to be picked up head on at any time. She'll back up and run away. It seems to be a trait of many Yorkies. Bella is 15 months old, now so it isn't just because she's a puppy. I just stay patient and don't take it personally as I know she loves me. I know how you feel. I don't understand it either. Hang in there! |
My first yorkie Katie did this. With Suzi my second I took things oh so slowly and quietly. (Complete slow motion and no talking.) If she moved away which she rarely did or does I ignored her for a bit. I think it can get a habit though. I gradually got Katie better by doing this. Give it a try. Initially, I think when they are puppies, hands must seem so big to them and they get scared. Especially as they don't understand our language for a while. my Tiggy will be 8 years old next month. When he wants to be held, he will stand up and bark to get my attention. When I reach down to pick him up, he automatically turns around and will growl. I'm wondering if they just feel more secure being picked up that way and not frontwards? btw, I got Tiggy from an abusive family when he was 3 years old, thank God! The mother worked all the time, the dad for some reason hated him & abused him terribly:(. he never learned to play with toys & still wont to this day:(, he was locked in his crate & only let out once a day to potty, had been kicked down stairs, etc, was terrified of men/boys but fell in love with my hubby pretty fast:) and the ONLY thing he had been taught was to growl. most times its really cute but can be annoying sometimes lol |
Abby does the same thing. It just makes me crazy. Neither one of my other yorkies ever did that. Abby is 18 months old. I thought it would get better but.......:( She has a mind of her own. :p |
It's very threatening in doggy language to loom over and show your hands going over their head. That being said, I know how you feel, as Thor is a big fan of the "pick me up, but don't use your scary hands" game. I even taught him the word "Pick Up", thinking he would jump into my arms if a dangerous situation came up outside. He has learned "Pick Up", it just means something a little different than I intended. Namely, "Mommy is going to move you from where you are perfectly comfortable, and do something awful like clip your nails. Avoid her at all costs!" |
Sadie does this also. It drives me crazy. I usually turn my back and ignore her. This may happen a few times before I can actually pick her up. I heard somewhere that they don't like on comming hands. Try picking her up form the side or from behind. |
Reesie does the very same and she's treated like she's the Princess of the house. She was older than 4 weeks when she came to us so I don't think age is a factor. Your son should be given a talking-to. If you look at Reesie's pics on our profile you'll see a black and white of my old Ginger. She passed from bladder cancer in 1998 and just loved the heck out of me. But my son had a bad habit of chasing her around and blowing trumpet at her with an empty paper towel roller. One day she just walked away after he did that and I looked all over for her. Finally, I looked way down the street and there was poor Ginger, just walking down the sidewalk running away from home. I ran so fast to get her and she just stood there looking at me with those big brown eyes asking "Why does he do this? It scares me'. My son never did THAT again.:mad: |
Hi yep..Dustie does just the same...comes over to me..I go to pick up..he backs off or runs away....even worse if I want to take something from his mouth..I have to try to get him a room where I can corner him..and then do a "Trade" for a small treat... But they are naughty sometimes aren't they..and Dustie doesn't like being picked up or carried really...He fights to get out of my arms...little terror..!!!:( With my other Yorkies I had 2 that used to always come in an instant when called..but 2 that never did...so they are all different.. I think you have to find a word to associate with coming to you...and then give a treat and be consistant and see how it goes..!!:) Chrisannx |

Yea Brandi does it too but when SHE WANTS ME TO PICK HER UP then it's a different story. When I want to pick her up, she gives me a look like I am about to take her to the torture chamber. I think Brandi is beginning to take after my cat. If anyone on here has ever own a cat you know what I mean. Everything is on their time. You are only allow to pet them when they are ready. Brandi's not that bad yet but when it comes to picking her up it's definitely only when she wants. |

Sadly, I think your going to have to "suck it up" and go to the dreaded obedience classes. That's where I am......every mind numbing Saturday. But it's working. We put a 20 foot lead on the little boogers and then call them to us with a treat. They can either walk to us or ski to us but COME, they do. Kills me to admit it but it's working. I never thought my Priscilla was stupid but then again....I didn't think I was either. I was only half right. I was doing everything wrong and shhhhhhhhhhhhhh, don't tell a soul, I TEACH behavior modification (for humans). I've only been a Yorkie pushover for a couple of months but without these classes, I was ready for the Rubber Ramada. Now I have a plan. I don't envision myself laid out on the carpet with tiny paw prints all over me. I can control the way I act and not just be reactive to her adorableness. I was starting to feel like silly putty. Out of control dogs are like out of control children.....only their parents love them. |

As for not listening when you call Ella did that too when she was a pup now she's the best little girl when she goes outside, it's like potty do a few laps and then we go inside. Pet obedience class would be something i wouldn't attempt myself, but if she doesn't grow out of these issues you are having w/ her i'd say that would be the way to go. |
Bailey does the same thing, drives me nuts! When he REALLY wants to be picked up though, he will stay completely still until I lift him up. |
Good to know that I am not alone in this. Zeus does it too. Trying to leave the house is no joy either he runs and hides from us. Even if he gets to come along it is a battle to catch him. There are the occassions when he comes to me and wants me to pick him up but not usually. We got him a day before he turned 9 weeks old. I always think he was separated too early from his Mama and siblings. |

Sadie plays chase...very well might I add. She doesn't like us to pick her up either and backs and runs off. sometimes you can tell it's more of a game of chase than dislike of being picked up. if i have clothes she'll run away fast, if she's got something she shouldn't have she makes a huge game out of us chasing her trying to get it back. i've learned to laugh her off and just bribe her with a treat if i really need to get to her fast and get sick of playing games. |
I'm so glad I'm not alone in this!! Bella whines to get in bed with me and when I reach down to pick her up she dives under the bed skirt!! Then I ignore her and she starts whining again and jumping at the side of the bed. I've often thought about the steps idea. Perhaps I'll give it a try. |

Back Up The Bus Arabella does this same thing. It use to annoy me to no end, especially in the middle of the night. I don't know where it came from or how it started but we have a saying that seems to work. When she does turn to the side for us to pick her up it looks like she is trying to parallel park a car. So, the saying "Back up the bus" came about. It is so funny because she will come to the side of the bed do her little whine, I put my hand down she backs up and the I say "Back up the bus", turns around and walks backwards until she is next to my hand. The only thing missing is the beeping alarm a school bus has. Does anyone else have a weird saying for their furbaby? |
Wow it looks like its a trait almost. She does it mostly when she will beg to get on the bed but I will reach down with both hands and sweetly say come on sweetie blah blah blah she stays just out of reach. The part where she looks at me as if we have never met is still amazing even though my cats do that to me all the time. When she does that from now on I will put her out of the bedroom. Not in anger but because she is smart and will put 2 and 2 together. Holly continues to amaze me. I love my dogs but she is just a different story and I love her so much. |
lol Im teaching Holly pseudo italian by saying "cat alone a" meaning leave the cat alone. I think shes starting to understand! Your story is hysterical though. lol Quote:
