Rescue is not for everyone, and as in picking a puppy from a reputable breeder, homework should be done in advance. |

It would be a better world if breeders were more thorough in who they sold to! What a dream that we would one day not have a need for rescues, but until that happens, I say ask the tough questions! Rescue dogs have already been through a lot, so they to make sure they are going to good homes! |
I really don't see how it is possible to find a reputable breeder who is breeding a yorkiepoo. Because one of the defining factors of a reputable breeder is one who is breeding to improve the breed. There is now way to make a better yorkie by crossing it with a poodle. Most people that are breeding this way are doing it for money, and if money is their only motivation then I really doubt that they spent money on testing and other important things to insure a healthy mom and litter. Good luck with your search and decision. :) |

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone by saying that cocker spaniels are dumb. If it's any consolation, Thor is not breaking any doggie MENSA records either. To be honest, every pure bred cocker I've met is... (really dumb, sorry!), and they are ranked very low on the breed intelligence scale. I believe Border Collies are ranked the smartest. That doesn't mean cockers aren't great, loving pets. The thing is, a good breeder is going to be very careful that none of her pets end up in shelters. She'll be very picky with her buyers. So while I think a hobby breeder who breeds mixes might be a nice person, I doubt that she's being super-rigorous about testing for genetic diseases and mandating that all her dogs are sold on a s/n contract. I do think that some breeders are working seriously to get their breeds recognized, and they are considering all these factors. But I think the average person who thinks it's fun to breed a litter here and there is not considering the fact that she may be contributing to the massive pet overpopulation in this country. I believe as breeders and owners, we have a great responsibility to dogs on this issue, and the very least we can do is make sure we don't make it worse. |

There are actually a lot of small breeds in shelters as well as rescues. There are a lot of specific "small breed" rescues out there. I got my yorkiepoo from a rescue; he was rescued from a shelter where he was surrendered by his owner. Max is a wonderful dog who had some insecurity issues at first, but with some work and dedication, he has come a long way. He is super smart and it didn't take long for him to adjust to our home. Its almost like he knows that we rescued him. He has truly been a gift to our family; he has brought us so much joy. No one should ever be discouraged from rescued a dog so long as the dog is good fit for their family. I think the reason that rescues get so in depth during the adoption process, is because they want to make sure the pet would be a good fit so that the dog/cat does not end up back at a shelter again. So many people get pets without thinking it through or don't want to spend the time training and therefore end up with behavioral problems. This is the main reason pets end up abandoned in the first place. |

In addition, I find the whole "hypoallergenic" marketing of dogs to be a complete load of bull. A dog is not magically "Hypoallergenic" just because it doesn't shed. :p |

gaildietz This is a very touchy subject on the YT boards to be sure. Please let us know how we can help you in finding a dog that is right for you. :) There is nothing wrong with wanting a mixed breed puppy. If you decide you want a Yorkie there are a number of great "reputable" breeders here on YT. If you want to know who on YT I got my new puppy Mickey from, private message me. I can not help out with finding a reputable Yorkiepoo breeder. I thought Max's breeder was one...I researched a long time. Just not long enough. |
