I'm scared too death (need comfort) My baby is 7 months old a little on the larger size 8-9lbs and tonight he swallowed a huge stick of plastic. It was the red stick that comes with cheez and crackers. It is about 2-2 and a half inches long. He swallowed the whole thing!!!! I'm preying it will just pass on its own but I'm looking at another one and it looks so big. It must have just slide down his throat staight down because he is showing no signs of discomfort at all. In fact he's his normal frisky self. Is it likely that this will just pass in his poop? What worries me is that it's plastic so I can't see it breaking down. Anxiously awaiting words of hope. |
IMO Emergency vet ASAP! Too big to digest and possibility of puncture is present. Not to mention if the stomach acid starts to digest the plastic it is going to make him very sick.... Go now.... |

Please do not wait to go to the vet! You need to get him looked at immediately! |
I have to agree. Please take him to get checked out. |
Wow - that's scarey! I hope that everything goes ok. |
For sure go the vet you can't wait for it to travel thru it could do damage at least the vet could take xray and he might tell you it will pass thru, but you can't make the determantion....I wouldn't take the chance. Keep us posted! |
Wow I am sure your at the vet right now.. I will watch for an update.. |

I would DEF go to the vet, and even call ahead to let them know you're coming. At least you know what he swallowed and didn't have to wait until he got sick or something to realize!! That's great you saw!!! Good luck:thumbup: Keep us updated. |
Just talked to the vet I live 8 hrs away from a large city. We have 1 vet and it is 8:00 at night and a holiday to boot here. After reading your replies I called him at home. He said I could give him Hy Perox to induce vomitting t try and get him too bring it back up (which he did not recommend). He said too keep a close eye on him and if he starts getting lethargic or throwing up too bring him in , in the morning. He said there is a possibility that it may just pass. When i said i was concerned about it's size and it not breaking down enough for him too pass he said that the stomach acid could be very strong and could possibly break it down???? |

Maybe call another vet to get an opinion, I think it's a good idea not to induce vomiting in case that makes him choke on it. Do you know if he chewed it at all or completely swallowed it whole? Any doctors on here? I'm guessing that's like a human swallowing something the size of a spoon or a popsicle stick right? You are in my thoughts!!! |
I would not recomend trying to make him vomit. Hopefully the acid will soften it to pass through his colon with no issue. If you see any blood please rush him to the pet hospital. Good luck!! Sending all my energy to your baby. |

BanditSocks2 is right - he could def choke on a 2-1/2 inch plastic piece |
I don't have any advice, I am so sorry that you have a stressful night ahead of you. I can't help but think that if the vet said to wait it out, then its okay to do so and try to stay positive. My warmest wishes are with you. |
Even though I think those plastic sticks are pretty small, I would have to agree with everyone on here, and I know because I have been through a similar experience.. Not too long ago, I was pet-sitting a friend's shih-tzu, and he swallowed a shoe string- and that is all it took... The shoe string wrapped around his intestines and he had to have surgery to have it removed. He did fine, but if I wouldn't have trusted my instincts and taken him in to the E-Vet he wouldn't be here now. So please.. follow everyone's advice and take him in ASAP. |
Definately swallowed it whole (no chewing) it was quick. Right now he's begging my daughter for strawberry. Normal bad self. There is no second opinion. We have 1 vet. |
My thoughts based on similar experiences of friends: 1--It won't break down in the stomach. Plastic does not break down like that. 2--Making your pup try to throw it up could do more harm than good. 3--It is possible it will pass through his system BUT if not 4--surgery may be required. |

I would do a wait and see since vet is aware and he is acting fine if he starts vomitting then i would get him in asap mine just ate part of a paper plate tonight so not a good night myself and he is my pancreatic dog so i am nervous here too but paper breaks down better than hard plastic. So no more paper plates here -ughhhhhh I hope it all passes as yours is a bigger one so you may be ok - do you feed wet or dry food? If dry i would soak the food to create moisture and possible will maneuver around the piece of plastic and move out and protect intestines It takes 48-72 hrs for something to pass so after 72 hrs you should be ok these little ones are fast my parents silky ate a whole bag of my mom's gold jewelry and they never found the jewelry as she made my nephews go out with plastic gloves on to find it and it was gone so their stomach acid is pretty strong |
another thing you can try to protect intestines is pumpkin as it may work as well pushing it out faster and pumpkin is soft |

Thank you. I knew you'd have good advise ! |
Omgosh I feel so bad for you, we have only 1 vet in my town too and it is horrible, I always worry about an emergency happening with my Bailey and not having proper services available. I hope this all turns out okay, good luck to you and your little guy! |
Don't have any advice, as i too would not know what to do in such a situation. i can only imagine how petrified and worried sick you are right now. I hope and pray that your baby will be ok <33 keep us posted! |
I am so sorry to hear about your baby...please keep us posted..I know they are quick when they do things...my shelby rae sits on my sewing table in her bed while I work and she had never done this before so i didn't think about it..I was embroidering something and turned around for a second and when i looked back she had pulled all the quilting pins one by one out of the pin cushion and spit them out all over the table...I saw one stuck to her chin and went into a panic...luckly she didn;t swallow any..but now I keep all my tools far from her...she has been sitting on my sewing table for 8 years then all of a sudden decided to do that go figure...I will be watching for news on your baby. |
I'm definitely not an expert but thought I'd share our experience. Darwin swallowed a chunk of plastic - we had no idea that he could actually break off a piece from the side of a plastic pop bottle. Looking at the bottle it looked like it would be a pretty jagged chunk. I called our vet (a town away from us) and was told also to keep an eye on things - I was also ready to give him something to get him to throw up but I read a bit on the internet and decided against it. Darwin never acted different either and after two days of panic and careful watching things were okay. I hope you have the same luck as we had. I totally understand not having a vet nearby. If you can get him into a vet I'm sure it would ease your mind. Good luck and please let us know how your little guy is doing. |
I don't have advices, I can only pray for your yorkie...I hope your furbaby would be fine, please keep us updated! |
Just checking in to see how the night went for the both of you. |
Just like what others said, take him to vet |
