Yorkie ear taping, how to prop ears up? Hello, I have my toby which is 7 weeks old now. When I first bought him i thought he was a boy and just this weekend I found out he was a she. The breeder made a mistake but I've since grown fond of my toby and will not exchange her. I have a question about ear propping, how do i prop my tobys ears up? I tried searching for guides on how to do this but since had no luck. |

I understand that, but that is not what I was referring to. You just found out your dog was female? I am sorry if I sound condesending but thats pretty important. There are several links to this board that show you how to tape ears. If you go down the threads or posts you will find a very recent one. |
There was a post not long ago, and gosh I do apologize for not remembering who to give credit to on that post. But they mentioned using part of a tampon to give support to the ear while the ears are taped. I never had to tape Schatzie's but that post stuck in my mind and it sounded like such a great idea. It can take up to 6 months of age for a Yorkie's ears to stand up from what I read, so please don't panic now if your pup's ears are still floppy. A lot of times, just having the tips of the ear shaved by your groomer does the trick. It worked for Schatzie. From what I have read on the posts the taped ears sometimes stick, sometimes don't and have to be redone quite often. So maybe it might be easier to just have the tips shaved first to see if that will work, if not then really dig into the info of taping. Let us know how it works for little Toby :D |
I was talking to my breeder the other week and she said that she is going to shave my yorkies ears to make them stay up because taping them, like schatzie said, sometimes doesn't stick for a long time and they'd have to get redone. :rolleyes: |
Yorkie ear tappoing Hi Everyone, This is my first time here. I have three boys - Amigo Mio, Baby Tango and Besame Mucho. I have had Yorkies for 30 years. I just love them. As far as the ears go, the reason they sometimes flop as puppies could be the hair on the ears which can weigh the ears down, or the calcium going to the teeth instead of the cartilage in the ears. The flop is usually temporary but my youngest yorkie's ears flop. He's the first one with floppy ears I have ever had. If I was showing the yorkie I would be concerned. But, they really should be up so just try to do what your vet tells you and hope for straightup ears. :animal-sm :animal-sm :animal-sm |
I agree with Schatzie. Bounces ears stood up all on their own, partly to fantasic genes I think, but I did shave the tips of his ears when he was little anyway. I have heard that helps some. And if all else fails, tape them. Good luck with it! |
hi i was the one that got the reply about using the inside of a tampon to help my coco's ear's go up. haven't tried it yet but i did try something else i used card board cut down to the size of his ears. wrapped that with regular paper tape because it doesn't pull the hair out then wrapped both ears with 2 inch mascene tape. did it for about a week they stayed up for one day but now thier back down. but they are going up little by little naturally. i'm just going to keep them shaved. i think it will work just to keep them shaved. i think it will take longer than taping them but atleast he won't be uncomfortable.hope this helps! :) |
hello. my yorkies ears just went up like 2 months ago. She is 7 months now. I would wait and see if they go up, if not, then I would figure out some way to put them up. |
great tip mine litter is still very lazy holding their ears one day up one day down one day one ear up grrrrrrrr, that ear taping is for the dogs (so to speak:) Out of frustration I called a local show person, what she does is very interesting without all the tape and hair pulling... she explained take a thin cardboard or a stiff grocery sack cut the shape of the puppy ear then at petco and also many places online sell ear glue, glue it on the inside of the ear after you've shaved it of course. SHe said it works everytime!!! Yippie running to petco now:) |
Take the ears and trim as much hair off as possiible. The hair weighs down the ears. Take scotch tape and hold the ear upright together then wrap tape around the ear to hold it up. Leave up for 48 hours. If the ears flop again after removing the tape then repeat for another 48 hours. This is very easy and works every time. You should not purchase a yorkie whose ears are not standing up. |

I was just saying if you want breed standard which is short perky ears, I would not buy a yorkie with huge flopping ears. I have bred yorkies for years and 80% of my babies ears stand on their own before 6 weeks. I have bred with others with larger ears and have had to tape. I prefer the short eared yorkies though. |
