embarrassing question - but I won't know if I don't ask! there are 3 little pups with a breeder I am buying from in May (when they are 12 weeks). I was thinking a little girl, but I went to meet them and there is a chubby, big baby boy that *might* be my new pup. I have a girl (she is 6 in a week) and I have already asked and learned about mixing genders. But here is the thing about getting a boy dog...I have reservations because of his...thingy...and thingy related issues. Can someone please tell me what are the boy-specifc things I would be dealing with if I get the boy? I was reading a post from way back about if it comes out and won't go back in...I'm wondering if he would lift his leg and pee on things in my house...I truly don't know and would like to learn, I don't want to miss out on having a really wonderful boy pup worrying about things that might not even be an issue. Thanks!! |
I have a boy and 3 girls. My boy Jack has never lifted his leg in the house and his thingy only comes out if he gets super exicited. It has never got stuck out. Have your boy spayed as soon as he is old enough and you should not have problems with him lifting his leg. |
If you get a boy, my advice is to neuter him young as to help with his feeling the need to mark things. Jacie was neutered at about 1 1/2 years. He feels the need to lift his leg whenever there is another dog here other than Sophie and Taffy, or we are in a strange place. There are belly bands for boys to wear as well to help with it. |
I love the boys. I think they are more clingy then girls, this is my opinion based on the two boys I had as compared to the girls I have. My biggest issue with boys is the lifting of the leg. I think if they are neutered as young as possible it usually will not happen, but I have to say in my experience it does sometimes still happen, depending on the dog. My older boy who passed at 10 yrs. old of cancer, NEVER lifted in the house. He was neutered at 5 or 6 months old. Now, Beans who is going to be two in March, lifts his leg on the wall. He was also neutered at six months of age, so I really think it depends on the individual dog. Elaine |
I have a male and got him neutered when he was 7 mths old. Still at 8 mths he pees like a girl, by squatting. His thingy which I call his red rocket only comes out when he get let out of his crate from being in there for a period of time. but it has never fully came out on the tip of his red rocket comes out. I have never had it become stuck out. From my understanding that isn't that common. I love my little man! Most dogs red rocket comes out everytime that they become excited. But my little guys doesn't just when he doesn't see me or my husband for a long period of time and is excited when he actually gets to see one of us!!! Hope this helps... Stefanie :) Happy Valentines Day! |
I have had males that were neutered young and have never lifted their leg or humped anything. I have never had ones thingy come out. The reason it might come out is if you were allowing him to hump things, pillows, toys etc. Most do not if they are neutered before they reach puberty. However if you have one that does start to hump things. Remove the object of his affection and correct him like you would any other unwanted behavior. Give him a chewie or something to refocus his attention. Little boys are wonderful, I think they are more cuddly and affectionate. And it would decrease the risk of not getting along. Sometimes 2 females will not get along. good luck on your choice. I had as little "fat boy" in one litter and he was soooooo darned cute. |
My guy has never hummped and his thingy still comes out.... |

Bailey is 10 months and my first boy dog. He was neutered around 6 months. He has never marked in the house, for some reason he doesn't even mark outside! He will hump his favorite toy occasionally at night time. He has never humped anything else except that one toy :) I've only seen his thingy once and it went back in right away! :p |
I have 2 boys and 1 girl. I got them neutered when they were 6mths old. They still squat:D |
I LOVE my little man Tobey. He is a momma's boy for sure. loves to cuddle! He was neutered at 4 months old and only marks outside. of course he lifts his leg to pee but he only pees on his potty pad in the house. i have never ever seen his thingy come out. He does hump his blanket from time to time but its not really a big deal to me. |
So much of it depends on the dog and when you get him neutered. The hormone testosterone is responsible for some of the behaviors, marking and humping, and while the testes make the bulk of testosterone, the adrenal glands make some, as well. I would recommend getting the dog neutered around 7 months before the testes start making massive doses of testosterone. Puppies will hump really early; there are many different opinions on why they hump. Some say it's a sign of dominance or they're bored or anxious. One of the breeders said that humping even helps the testicles to drop. I've never seen Joey's "lipstick", and he stopped humping after he was neutered. Concerning marking, so much of that depends on whether you will have other dogs visiting your house, since the adrenal glands make testosterone in males and females, both may mark, if they are around other dogs. The scents of other dogs get the adrenal glands to produce testosterone, and this in tern, promotes marking. My son's male Maltese had visited my home many times before I got Joey; he never marked and never even lifted his leg to pee. He was at least 3 when we got Joey, and even though Joey didn't, at the time, raise his leg to pee, Baxter started raising his leg. So it wasn't seeing another dog raise his leg and imitating the action, it was the smell/scent of the other dog, that triggered Baxter's adrenal glands, and this caused him to start lifting his leg. I've read that a boy and girl get along better than 2 girls. |

Bubba was neutered when he was 6mo. He never lifts his leg on anything in the house but if I take him to someone elses home he will pee on anything and everything if not watched. As for humping, every night after dinner he gives his bed a couple of humps just to let the bed know who's boss but I've never seen his "thingy" out. |

I recomend my puppy owners to neuter between 5 and 6 months old. I never had anyone report a problem. I had people being too "relaxed" about potty training ... human faults... as soon they got back on track on the training schedules and routines, all resolved ! I only see the "red rocket" on my males when they are humping to breed, remember, i am a breeder and all my boys are not fixed at all . The Upbringing will make the difference ! XOXO |
I have had boys in the past. It comes out and all the way! Fixed or not. I loved my dogs but I will never have a boy again. It bothered me too much and also they can pee almost in motion it is very sloppy sometimes and gets all over their legs. Lots of people seem to have great experiences with boys. I just enjoy having a girl so much more now. |

But if I did, I would discourage that behavior. |
It is an adjustment at first, when you've had only a baby girl for so long. When we got Rocco at 12 weeks he was humping like crazy but he hardly does it now. And I saw his "red rocket" lol only once-and it was just because he was excited (not 'that' kind of excited; the more innocent one lol) from playtime. Like the others have said, there are ways to discourage that behavior and also neutering at a young age helps. After neutering my other boy Teddy as a puppy he would still hump every once in awhile but his 'thing' never came out. He's completely grown out of the whole humping thing now. Good luck, I just know you will have so much fun with two! I love having a little boy and little girl, I feel like i have the best of both worlds! |
Smokey started lifting his leg at 14 weeks!!!...........so he wears belly bands 24/7.................and as for the ""thingy""...............Smokey had a problem with his still being all the way out after breeding...........a couple of times it was out for almost 2 hours............and i mean all the way out............so each dog is definitely different...........nuetering does not stop all lifting..........just slows it down..........those that dont lift..........well their owners just got lucky............it is in the male nature to lift............that is what my vet told me.................Smokey will lift his leg on anything. |
Oh, that reminds me. Like Tnyorkiemom said above me, all dogs are different. Teddy never lifted his leg and still squats to this day. Rocco squats as well and he is nearly 16 wks. *knock on wood* ;) good luck again, and i know there is never a guarantee, but sometimes it is worth the risk. |

And I agree 100% with JeanieK, boys are fantastic cuddlers! At least my boy is!:p He's never far from my side and always welcomes me home enthusiastically. I love coming home to someone that is always happy to see me. |
I think the most important thing to remember about boys, is that you will fall totally in love with them, and if they do things you think are gross, you'll probably also find them adorable, because they are your dog. As has been mentioned, a boy and a girl are more likely to get along than two girls. Make sure you s/n them both at an early age. My guy Thor never humps. If another dog tries to hump him, he just stands there and takes it until I shoo the other dog off. He does looooooooove to mark, but he does not mark in my home, and honestly, it is really cute when he does it outside (again, might be because he's my dog. ;)). He's so little, and he liiiiifts his leg as high as he possibly can, often at more than a 180 degree angle with the other one. It does look to me like he's trying to get his mark up high, but sadly for him, it's the difference between 2" off the ground, and 2.000001. I do have to explicitly teach him not to mark in new places. He comes to work with me, and when we moved offices, he started marking there for a bit. As other people have mentioned, you can get a belly band for when you bring your dog to visit other people's homes, etc. Remember that a lot of girls also hump, and some girls mark. I started a thread about how Thor's Thorminator has been making regular appearances, but it's not common for him. I think for most male dogs, they may get a small erection when they are excited or anxious, but it's not a full-on sexual thang, and tends to subside pretty quickly. Usually if it's out for a long time, it means something is wrong. Oh, okay, I'm going to be honest about the one big downside of male yorkies - not nearly as many cute clothes. Seriously, if I could change one thing, that would be it. |

I have owned two male dogs. My last one was neutered young (about 5 1/2 mths) He was a leg lifter right from the start. I worked deligently with his potty training and he would go months and never mark anything..then if we had company, or my husband would go to the store and not take him, or whatever was going on that he found disagreeable he would lift his leg on something. He was a very dominate aggressive dog ( a minpin ) and I finall gave up and belly banded him while he was in the house. As far as seeing his "lipstick" we only saw it maybe two or three times when he was cleaning himself. He was also a momma's boy and very, very affectionate and loving and funny and sweet. |
JoJo was a big-time humper as a young puppy, but he stopped at around a few months old and no longer humps. He is neutered and is now 1 1/2 years old, and I'm glad to say that I've never seen his "red rocket". I love him to pieces, but that is one part of him I don't want to see! :p |
Hot Rod was neutered at 6 1/2 mo and does not lift his leg in the house but does so outside. He squats when he uses the pads. I have only seen his thingy out once and it did not get stuck. I had heard that boys were more cuddly and I can say that he definitely is! |

The funny thing is I volunteer at a shelter that staffs a bunch of excellent dog trainers, most of whom are female. I remember they were leashing up one particularly rambunctious puppy for a walk, and I guess the prospect of a walk with three beloved humans was very exciting for him. He flipped over on his back, and there it was, in all its glory. All three of these seasoned, professional women went EEEEWWW, put that thing away! :p |
