Does yours do this? It's kinda freaking me out. Ever since Bella was a few months old, she's been notorious for barking like crazy with no warning at all, and at the most random things. For instance, I've been awoken in the night at her barking at some corner in the wall across the room. She hasn't done it a lot recently, but just a few minutes ago she jumped up (she had been sleeping peacefully) barking madly at the doorway, or something in the hallway. (Hubby and Rocco are sleeping in their beds; everytime i look there is nothing there that would make sense for her to bark at so madly). I'm sitting in a chair close to the entryway of the door so it really freaked me out. So i pick her up and hold her in the chair with me to calm her down. She just keeps staring off in that direction, and sniffing the air every five seconds. I don't know bout any of you, but i find her behavior unsettling. Just wanted to know if anyone else's acted strangely like this? |
My Chewie has never done this. Did you check if there was anything going on outside your door? Sounds creepy though..hehe.. |
not to scare you or anything, but animals DO sense ghosts & spirits |

What a trip... mine is doing that right now. We are alone tonight, but she did it at 5am, just woke up barking then al afternoon and now. Think it's time to take her to bed and attempt to quiet her down. Yhis time she's looking out the window in the back, and no I can't see anything out there. It's not the first time. I find it annoying more than unsettling. |
You might want to set some mouse traps around the house. Those little critters get behind the walls and can move around the house with out you ever seeing them. Some Pups are better at finding mice than some :cat: .;) |
Ermm...I do believe they see "thing" we don't see.. |
Laci freaks me out when she does this especially when I see her head turn as though she is acutually following something with her eyes.. that is freaky... it usually starts with a very low muffled growl, then she gets to her , Im going to protect you stance" , then off she goes with her barking... It really freaks me out when she appears to be " looking" at SOMETHING:eek: |
I call it her "Lawnmower Effect" Precious can be dead asleep, and w/o provacation, start a low rumble "grrrrr" then it progresses to a "GRRR-GRRRRR-GRRRRRRRRR" (thats when I tell her "Get that lawnmower started baby-girl") then its full blown haywire barking. Now in her defense, we have horses who think midnight is playtime...I think she hears them. Our house is kinda "off the beaten path" so to speak, so I dont feel she is barking at people. As far as the ghosties go, Ive heard that as well. |
Crosley & Camden do this! Not Wrigley, she can barely be bothered to ever bark at anything! I usually think it's something they hear that we can't hear! What I always find funny, is when they notice something for the first time that has been there forever and start barking at it! Like Camden just noticed the flame that is in our fireplace when it's not on and she does this low growl at it! |
Didn't you know that ALL Yorkies are service dogs? They can alert you to many things like ghosts, plastic bags on the sidewalk, cancer, the mailman, cats, blowing leaves, seizures, and will wake you in the night if there is anything at all that may attack you in your sleep!:D |

As I was reading bellanrocco's post I feel goosebumps. Especially this one: "I'm sitting in a chair close to the entryway of the door so it really freaked me out. So i pick her up and hold her in the chair with me to calm her down. She just keeps staring off in that direction, and sniffing the air every five seconds. " The way your dog act is really scary! There might be something or someone in there! waaaaaaaaaa! It may be a burglar! ;) |

rex does that! freaks me out to. but i do believe they can see things we cant |
Thanks for the replies everyone. yorkiebebe- i looked all around, but nothing..and she was staring at the wall that's directly visible from where I was sitting--and from where she had been laying before being 'startled' awake. yeah, definitely creeped me out! lol yorkielover4lif- i believe this too. Just didn't want to suggest it as there may be skeptics here, lol. Hubby is a skeptic himself; he was snoring rather loudly in a deep sleep but awoke when Bella went beserk. I begged him to go out in the kitchen with me to turn off the kitchen light, lol. He grumpily obliged, but chided me for thinking Bella was barking at a ghost or spirit. bloominsuz- LOL. It can be annoying, I agree--I feel terrible for my neighbors--but when I can't see what it is that bella is barking, sniffing heavily at, or following in the air with her eyes and her head, it scares the living bejeezus outta me. snowcrustracer- We live in an apartment complex and they have Pest Control..however, that could be a possibility at my parents' house. jeanm1963- I completely agree. It is very scary, because when bella was lying on my lap and sniffing the air, she would crane her neck to the side, the way she does when she sees or spots something that holds her intense interest..sorta the way she does when she sees a stranger come too close to the car, or another dog (or cat) while on a walk. And then she followed-with her head and eyes-whatever it was she was looking at, sniffing so hard and nearly fell out of my lap trying to lean forward to sniff at the air. I had goosebumps the entire time, and just felt based off of her tension that something was just not right. Shorkie Daddy- LOL. Your little one sounds adorable. Bella is also mixed with Shih Tzu. :) You're right that dogs can hear all kinds of sounds from far away that we can't. She will growl and bark in her sleep as well, but when she goes nuts barking I can sense the fear and warning in her bark that sends chills up my spine. Reese1- Haha!! you are sooo right about that! Both Bella and Rocco do the same thing. Just yesterday Bella started barking at hubby's jacket that he always places over a chair in the dining area. ritzydaisy- aint it the truth! Hubby and i jokingly threaten Bella that we're going to get a no-bark collar if she keeps barking at everything that moves outside the window:p Sweet Puppy- I apologize for the goosebumps. LOL. Bella is very good at spooking me, I'll tell ya that! Thanks everyone, and everyone whom i didn't get a chance to reply to. As soon as I got up and went to turn off the lights all around the house (with the aid of hubby; i didn't dare want to go around by myself after this latest barking incident), Bella calmed down and even approached the barked-at spot, sniffing around. Then she went right back to sleep. Who knows what she saw, or heard, but i'm hoping it will be awhile before she "sees" or "hears" it again. |
Yes my Suzi does it sometime. Makes you wonder what they've seen or heard eh. Hugs Shirl x x |
Barking My Lola sleeps in bed with us and is usually quiet all night. This past Wed. morning she started barking in bed like we've never heard before, she woke me up and I looked at the clock and it said 4:00a.m. Later that morning we're watching the local news and heard that there was a earthquake about 20 miles west of us in the Chicago suburbs at exactly 4:00 a.m. We never felt it but evidently Lola sensed it. |
Mine did stuff kind of like that when she was a puppy, but she outgrew it. I remember once when I'd hung a suit on the door across the hall from our bedroom and she woke up in the middle of the night and started barking at it like it was a person standing there.:D Poor lil thing. Scared her to death. I didn't do that anymore.:) |
Ohh creepy!!! Jasper wakes up in the middle of the night and barks too but I live in an apartment building so I think he just hears that I don't. I hope..... lol |
My previous Yorkie would suddenly go nuts barking at the back door. I would open the door to let her out, and, always, was greeted by a faint skunk odor. There is a road about 1/2 mile away that runs along a wooded area, and skunks get run over on it from time to time. We couldn't smell it in the house, but she could. She would run out barking and snarling, check out the yard, and when she was satisfied that there wasn't an intruder, she would calm down as if nothing had happened and come back inside. When she did this, we used to say that she was "ready for fight club." One time when she went into fight club mode, I opened the door and the odor was much stronger than normal, I'm sure the skunk was about a block away. She ran out the door snarling and barking, got about 5 feet out, immediately turned around and ran right back in the house. All that audacious bravado was gone! We sure miss that girl. :( |
Yes animals do sense things. Sophie used to bark and growl at 'nothing' and follow things with her eyes. London also sometimes does it..it is especially scary sometimes when all the lights are out and she will go sit at the edge of the bed and just stare...not move a bone but just stare..creeps me out. lol Teddy doesn't do it though |
MING- That is absolutely amazing! yorkieusa- Bella does the exact same thing, it's quite hilarious :D cbhunny- We live in an apartment complex as well, so I'm thinking that that's usually the case. Last night was just especially strange-she was barking at a specific localized spot on the wall out in the hallway. Very weird!! OwnedbyJezebel- LOL! That's too funny. Bella gets into 'fight club mode' all the time! I'm sorry your previous little girl is no longer with you. <3 mizzwanned- yes definitely creepy. I've seen some weird things both at my parents' house and here at our apartment. When those incidents have happened, Bella was calm as ever, which i don't get. But the barking such as last night is equally hair-raising. |
If you really want to get creeped out, have a watch of the show "Haunted" on the animal planet. I don't like to sleep after watching that show, but I love it! haha My Yorkie Bichon mix, gets very barky when things are quiet and he's anticipating my wife coming home from work. He also barks if we leave the blinds open at night, I think the shadows outside at night play tricks on him. |
scostell- That show sounds interesting! Didn't know they had a show like that on Animal Planet. I love those kinds of programs, but I end up paying for it later :D |
This is going to sound weird, but Bella did something very strange again tonight. I'm sitting here in the room watching tv, and notice that Bella left the room. all of a sudden i hear her utter a low growl. So i quickly get up and step into the hallway. I see her standing in the living room, her back (tail?) to me, staring at *something* to the right. The doors leading to the patio are on that side of the room, but her focus didn't appear to be in that direction, or even on anything more than 2 or 3 feet away from her. I called to her, and she didn't even budge, or break her stare. So i slowly went and picked her up, bringing her back to the bedroom with me. I shut and locked the door (home alone as hubby works nights) and laid her in my lap. She continued to bark and growl at the door, ears perked and body stiffened. She did this for at least five minutes before settling down. She awoke again a few minutes later to bark at my neighbors outside, arriving home..that bark and growl was much different than earlier and last night, and i didn't feel that it was strange. the other times, something just seemed...off. Meanwhile, Rocco is crashed out on the side of his pen, sleeping like a baby. |

I apologize! I didn't mean to creep out anybody. Your statement has really piqued my interest though-you've been 'warned' by your pets before? |
bellanrocco did you ever try to check out what she was barking at? |
bellanrocco, maybe it is time to get the apartment manager to get the pest control folk up to check your apartment. I did see other Yorkytalk members,(I apologize I forgot your names) suggest the critter connection. It is true that Yorkies are able to find rodents and your's is a young dog and maybe even interested in barking at spiders or bugs. Not saying that your apartment is infested, no, but the way buildings are made and creatures of all manners can get into buildings and do on a regular basis. Mice, bugs and snakes can crawl around inside the walls without our knowing it, but the dogs can hear them. I am sure that you are doing nothing wrong, but there is not a building made that creepy crawlies can't get into! As an example, the following is definitely not your problem, but it shows that critters who want to get in, can and will what ever way possible! I saw a tv news crew report on some poor woman in Winston Salem,N.C. who had rats swimming up through her toilet and had the tv crew there with cameras to prove it. A plummer then told them how to fix the problem with a different valve to prevent the critters from being able to get in. We used to have a neighbor up the street who's dog barked at a plastic bag that had blown against the fence. It did not belong there and had gotten there under its own power and should leave, as far as the dog was concerned ;) My dog barks when our outside cat wants to play and dosn't matter to her that it is 2 or 3 am and 17 degrees F out......:(:animal36 Sitting with her and calming her when she does this, probably only encourages her to continue to do this and causes problems for anyone trying to sleep when she does bark at odd times, or for you because it alarms you and you\'re not sure what she is alerting to. So for the most part you need to ignore her when she does this or distract her but don\'t "condone" it by sitting with her and petting her, it makes her feel she should do it again, when you encourage her to do so by "calming her" afterwards. This may take a very long time and lots and lots of patience on your part. Good luck! |
Roxie loves to bark at this one spot in the corner of the living room. There is absolutely nothing there. The wall is blank and I have checked it for insects, spiders, or anything else of that nature. It is very strange indeed. |
