backing up?! Everytime Gabby wants me to hold her, say I am sitting on the couch, she jumps up and down beside me. When I reach down to pick her up, she backs away every time. The same thing happened with BJ, my beloved yorkie of 17 years. It makes me think she is afraid of me. It breaks my heart. Anyone else with this problem? Is this a yorkie thing? |
OMG Bandit does the EXACT same thing...we just leave our hands down for about 20 seconds and he'll jump into them usually, but it really is the oddest thing! |
My Lucy does this too. She'll go upstairs and then get stuck up there because she can't get back down. I know she doesn't want to be up there forever by herself; but as I walk toward her to go and get her - she often backs away. I don't understand it either; we've never yelled at her or hurt her in anyway. I finally started bring a cheerio upstairs with me and then she will walk toward me instead of away from me. |
Jackson does this too! Not ALL the time but most of the time... I think he just doesn't wanna be picked up or something lol. I'm not sure. But it makes me so sad when it does it because I've never laid a finger on him! |
It must be a yorkie thing. I have never raised a hand to either of my babies. I am glad to hear it happens to other mommies. It makes me feel better. |
Gypsy does this too. If she really wants up she will turn her back to us so we can scoop her up. |
Mine do this too. They aren't afraid of you they just want you to get up and play with them. If only they could talk. |
It must be a yorkie and a maltese thing. Both of them do it. What I do is stretch my arms out and if they move back I ignore them for a few seconds and try again. I just think there so spoiled they want you to go to them. Now they know if they want up they have to come to mommy. Oh and they have to stand in upright position for mommy to pick them up. |
Sophie does something like this! She crouches down on her tummy, like she's afraid of me. Yes, it is heartbreaking! :( But I'm in the same boat as all of you-- I've never spanked her or swatted her, or anything like that. I read on here that someone cues the dog when she's going to pick it up. Now I say, "up, up" before I pick up Sophie. I'm hoping maybe it might help. I actually feel embarrassed when she cowers down like that in front of people... I know they're wondering what on earth I do to the poor little thing! :eek: |
My Sadie does the same thing when she wants me to play. Other times when it is nap time or she is tired she actually turns around for me to pick her up. Smart breed! |
Same here All of our furbabies are like that too...think they are just shy at first and wait for us to pick them up. Don't think they are afriad of me. |
Mine does it too. I look as it as almost like a reflex action. The see a big ol' hand coming toward them, and it's doggy instict or something. They may also think them doing that helps us in some way! I always kiss and love mine when I finally get him, though, because it is very heartbreaking. (maybe they just do it for the luvins lol);) |
Tucker does it ALL THE TIME. But he's not cowering...he just backs up and barks and gets a toy. :rolleyes: He thinks every move you make means you want to play with him. |

I heard this was something most small dogs do. My Dezi is the same. If I reach for him straight on he backs up. But if I reach down & pick him up from the side he is fine. I don't think they like our "big" hands reaching for their "little" heads. |
Roxie does this too. If she "agrees" to being picked up she will stand absolutely still...like she knows she is caught. |
Wrigley does this too! If I say "do you want me to help you" then she will usually stay still for me to pick her up to get on the sofa. If she wants to see out the windows, then I say "do you want to see" and she usually lets me pick her up without backing up. Camden usually stays still and doesn't run, just every once in awhile! |
Gracie is guilty of this too! Bristol not so much! |
Daisy will run away, too, even if is something she wants. She will bark to go outside potty. I get her leash, and she runs and hides. I have to open the door a crack to get her to come out. I did find something out by accident, tho. When she starts to run behind something I call out "STOP" and she stops dead in her tracks! Then I can go pick her up. It is very funny. One day I just said the word "stop" in a regular voice and she just stood there frozen until I picked her up. I wonder if they get too excited and don't know what to do, so they run. |

My Harley does the exact same thing! He has never had a hand laid on him. He's never been dropped either. He'll jump on my leg to pick him up and when I reach down to get him he backs up super fast. I have started picking him up under his belly instead of by his front legs. So sometimes now he'll jump on my leg to be picked up and then he'll stand real still so I can reach under his belly and scoop him up. This site has really helped me to relax with Harley. Not to get over excited about everything. |
Piper also does the same thing. Drives me NUTS! She is jumping against my leg to pick her up and then backs off when you reach towards her. She'll be all excited to go out for a walk but again back off when you go to pick her up. Sometimes she'll even go to another room. I've learn to ignore her when she does this and 99% of the time she'll be back quickly and then lets me pick her up. It's the strangest behavior. My male Yorkie that I had for 13 years never did that. It does make you think that your baby is afraid of you and that upsets me. |
same here Zippy does the same thing, but he doesn't really want to be held he is just getting my attention in the hopes that I will play fetch with him. His actions look like he wants up but he really doesn't. He doesn't have time to waste just laying around being petted if there is a game to be played. |
The cue works great! I started saying come here......upsy daisy : )....and it works and it's been working great. My husband is not to keen on the daisy part..lol |
Chewie does the same thing. But I look at it as being playful like come and get, catch me if you can. If your dog was scared of you I'm sure he wouldnt come near you. Dont feel sad about it, seems like most yorkies does this.:) |

Funny how there are alot of people here with the same issue. Our Max does the same thing I go to pick him up and he backs away.We have to tell him to stop.. and then he does and then we can pick him up. Weird we've never hit him or yelled at him since he is a very good natured dog. I see lotsa posts here but no answers to why? |
For some reason I have always said to Darwin "up, up, pup, pup" since he was very young and he always wants to come up right away. I have seen him back away from someone when they've just gone straight away to pick him up. Maybe they're just "proper" pups and expect us to have manners; you know, ask permission before being picked up, hmmm, glad I chew with my mouth closed!;) |
