My Yorkie climbs! When we leave the house, we let our 3 1/2 month old yorkie, Rucker, run around in our big kitchen (it's puppy-proofed!). We have a baby gate up so that he can't get out and run around the house. We do this for his safety and also so that he won't mess up the rest of the house. I came home twice yesterday after being gone, and found him out of the kitchen. I put him back in the second time and watched him, and was amazed to see him climb the gate and jump over! This isn't a little gate by any means. It's tall for him. I was amazed. Leslie and Rucker :aimeeyork |
Yes, they can climb. They're little monkeys.:D I remember a long time ago a breeder made a video of her little gang climbing over the baby gate.:) |

Ya they do climb! :D Here is one of my old post related to climbing! ;) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...-play-pen.html |
Yes, the do climb....I have one that is prone to climbing and so are his offspring. One word of warning.....As a puppy I kept him in an x-pen when I couldn't monitor his every move......his climbing out, let to his dislocating his hip, which resulted in surgery. Big lesson, I added tops to all my x-pens...... |
Mine climbed over a gate, too. It was the type that had horizontal and vertical webbing, so it gave her "toe holds" to climb up and over. It scared the crap out of me -- what if she fell while climbing, and one of her feet got caught. Potentially, she could be dangling upside down for hours, damaging a limb or dying. So I bought another gate, one with only vertical slats, so there was no way for her to climb up. That gate, though, when it was adjusted to fit the doorway, had gaps on the edges that were a little too big, so she was able to squeeze out through the edges. I finally had to use both gates together, with the gridded one on the outside about 2 inches away so that she couldn't use it to climb, but it blocked the edges on the vertically slatted one. I think she is large enough now that I probably only have to use the vertically slatted gate. |
I had one that could climb a 6 foot fence. She was like spiderman..lol |
I have one of those climbers, too! I have to move chairs away from tables, desk, counter, etc. I have watched GB thinking about jumping, you can read her mind and know she is heading for mischief, and then up she goes! In fact, while I was writing this, I left my desk for a minute, only to come back and find GB on my desk, sitting on my keyboard, with that Yorkie guilt smile! OMG, can she read? Did she know I was writing on YT and exposing her bad behavior? She's smart, guess smarter than I have given her credit for. She's not a tiny Yorkie, she weighs 12lb and is agile as a cat. Gosh, I have never enjoyed an animal as much as I have our 2 Yorkies. They keep us busy! |

I have seen some pretty funny videos of Yorkies climbing out of ex pens and over gates. Sure does make you smile to watch the little monkeys! Luckily, I do not have a climber. |

You can alway secure one gate on top of the other, so he cant get out... just incase he tries to climb and your not home and he breaks a leg... that would be scary! |
This is a good reminder for those who have climbers not to leave a harness or collar on them when you are not home: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/mem...tle-angel.html |
