My Yorkie climbs! When we leave the house, we let our 3 1/2 month old yorkie, Rucker, run around in our big kitchen (it's puppy-proofed!). We have a baby gate up so that he can't get out and run around the house. We do this for his safety and also so that he won't mess up the rest of the house. I came home twice yesterday after being gone, and found him out of the kitchen. I put him back in the second time and watched him, and was amazed to see him climb the gate and jump over! This isn't a little gate by any means. It's tall for him. I was amazed. Leslie and Rucker :aimeeyork |
Yes, they can climb. They're little monkeys.:D I remember a long time ago a breeder made a video of her little gang climbing over the baby gate.:) |

Ya they do climb! :D Here is one of my old post related to climbing! ;) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...-play-pen.html |
Yes, the do climb....I have one that is prone to climbing and so are his offspring. One word of warning.....As a puppy I kept him in an x-pen when I couldn't monitor his every move......his climbing out, let to his dislocating his hip, which resulted in surgery. Big lesson, I added tops to all my x-pens...... |
Mine climbed over a gate, too. It was the type that had horizontal and vertical webbing, so it gave her "toe holds" to climb up and over. It scared the crap out of me -- what if she fell while climbing, and one of her feet got caught. Potentially, she could be dangling upside down for hours, damaging a limb or dying. So I bought another gate, one with only vertical slats, so there was no way for her to climb up. That gate, though, when it was adjusted to fit the doorway, had gaps on the edges that were a little too big, so she was able to squeeze out through the edges. I finally had to use both gates together, with the gridded one on the outside about 2 inches away so that she couldn't use it to climb, but it blocked the edges on the vertically slatted one. I think she is large enough now that I probably only have to use the vertically slatted gate. |
I had one that could climb a 6 foot fence. She was like spiderman..lol |
I have one of those climbers, too! I have to move chairs away from tables, desk, counter, etc. I have watched GB thinking about jumping, you can read her mind and know she is heading for mischief, and then up she goes! In fact, while I was writing this, I left my desk for a minute, only to come back and find GB on my desk, sitting on my keyboard, with that Yorkie guilt smile! OMG, can she read? Did she know I was writing on YT and exposing her bad behavior? She's smart, guess smarter than I have given her credit for. She's not a tiny Yorkie, she weighs 12lb and is agile as a cat. Gosh, I have never enjoyed an animal as much as I have our 2 Yorkies. They keep us busy! |

I have seen some pretty funny videos of Yorkies climbing out of ex pens and over gates. Sure does make you smile to watch the little monkeys! Luckily, I do not have a climber. |

You can alway secure one gate on top of the other, so he cant get out... just incase he tries to climb and your not home and he breaks a leg... that would be scary! |
This is a good reminder for those who have climbers not to leave a harness or collar on them when you are not home: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/mem...tle-angel.html |

I have to show my husband how the one climbed up and over the gate, cause yes ours too did the same thing when he was about 12 weeks old, I actually thought I forgot to put him away, until he did it the next day too so now we shut the laundry room door but its a big room so he has plenty of room. |

Ugh. My biggest fear is that Roxie is going to get over the gate in the kitchen and get hurt in the process. She hasn't climbed yet, but I am afraid she will try it eventually. |

The videos are funny to watch but your story it's funny at all! Mika and Tom Pouce have climb the 3.5 feet gate that close their bedroom before, I got worry for their knees so I now put an extra part on the top that stop them from jumping...and for the puppies, i usually move them to the dog's bedroom when they start climbing on there play pen but I will for sure be way more careful with the next litter. Thanks for the warning. |
2 Attachment(s) i have Mei Ling who can open the wire kennels by unlatching the lock (pictured below), this other one that has a different lock and if she had thumbs she could probably open the plastic crates....lol....and she is a climber/flyer....i have gates like the one in the 2nd video and she can fly over those...so what i did was went to baby's r us and got another type of gate that had like plexi glass instead of one pictured below and double stack them while I am gone. So the one with the holes and what not is on the bottom so they can see out...but if she attempted to climb or fly over them she couldn't because of the one stacked ontop of the other one that doesnt have grates for her to slip her feet in...and because of the plastic or pexi glass she has no grip. |
Gatsby dose not climb but he dose jump i had a gate up on the stairs because he cant get up and down them with out jumping and pitching forward and when he wanted to go upstairs he jumped the gate and did it any way i lock him in the bathroom when im not home all soaps and toothpaste and lotion is in cabinets i di dcome home one day and found him soaking wet from whear he had jumped in toilet i thought the lid had been down but i guess it was up |
Hi im new here to. My Rex is a little climber to . We also have a gate to keep him in the kitchen . But as the bars are to wide he can get through we put perspex on the inside to keep him in witch also means he cant climb it. |

I agree, the x-pen top is great to have. I would rather mine not try and climb out. With the top on they don't even try. Mine fits the 4' x 4' pen or it folds in half for a 2' x 4' size. |
