He's taken a turn for the worse... I just need to reach out to the group on this. I am out of ideas on how to help my poor little furbaby. Winston is now 13 months old and can no longer take a care ride without completely melting down. It all started when we took a car trip for Thanksgiving to CA, which was a 6 hour drive. Since that trip he has never been the same in the car. Up until that time he was always fine, never showed any signs of distress. About half way into the trip he started shaking, panting, breathing really hard and wining. I took him out of his car seat and held him the rest of the way but it didn't help. We stopped every hour or so and he would get out, walk around and use the restroom. As soon as he returned to car within minutes he started the symptoms again. Now, every single car ride we take he immediately starts with the same behavior. Even if the car ride is 2 min or 20 min...I don't know what to do, I feel like I am putting him through so much. But I take him everywhere and can't imagine he would be happier staying home alone. Please help, it just makes me so sad to see him this way :( |
Sorry to hear that. I always started mine out on little short rides when I first got them and just kept it up and they loved to go for rides - short or long. Please go read thru this whole thread and see if there is anything here that might help you: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...car-rides.html |
Thanks, it did help a little. I liked the suggestion of trying to put him in the car for 5 min a day without going anywhere and gradually work our way up to short trips. Wisk me luck! |
Can you try to engage her with toy? Maybe you can play with her to distract her attention? Or if you're driving maybe other can help? Sugar has car sick, but not very serious one...whenever I drive, I put her on leash and she sat still on my laps, she's good this way..I'm sorry to hear it doesn't help in your case :( |
I feel your pain Dexter is the same way and he vomits too :( it is stressful to take him anywhere anymore so i just leave him at home now as it stresses me out and i feel bad the whole time. He was not like this as a puppy. I got cerenia from vet but hate to give him a med to take him in a car. I dread having to take him to vet as he had pancreatitis and when he starts vomitting he does not stop and so i hate to even chance the car rides for that reason as well :( so sad as he is so social and i want to take him to meet ups as he would have so much fun but just cannot put him through the car ride :( |
Poor Dexter. Momo gets anxiety attacks in car rides. He'll wimper & whine the whole way & won't sit still. But, he likes going for car rides. Every chance he gets, he'll hop in the car. Winston's mommy, please update us on how it goes. Hope he does well, good luck! |
When I first joined I read a post on giving carsick doggies 1/2 of a Bonine tablet for every 5 lbs. It can be found at Walgreens or WalMart. Snowboy, my Pommie, gets extremely carsick. It has worked wonders for him. Please check with your vet before using it. ~Joanne~ |
Emmie will get sick every time that she is in a crate in the car. If I let her ride in my lap everything is fine. We tried long rides and short rides. So now she will sit in my lap. |
My Biscuit was the same way in the car..panting, whining, barking etc. But, everytime I would get my keys to go in the car, he would run to me and jump around and when I opened the door he was always the first one in the car. He really seemed to enjoy it, so I would just take him on short rides to pick up my kids from school etc. :animal-pa |
I am so sorry that he is so stressed. Bra'Tac and Andromeda were a little upset by the car as well. I started taking them on just a 5 minute drive, 1 mile up the street to the Burger King with my son. The whole time we held them and said, "going for Yum-Yum". Then when we would get them home we would give them each a tiny piece of burger. {I know, I know, Burger King burgers are horrible for them, but just a tiny piece. } This seemed to work. Now when we go to the vet, I tell them. They also know what "vet" means, and that is when they really start shaking. But I would rather tell them the truth. Best of luck with your little one...... |
