Do you get asked how much you paid for your Yorkie? It happens quite often, that after someone pays a compliment to Rio, the next question is "How much did you pay for her?" I get nervous when people look at her and just see $$$$$ and I usually lie and say I got her free as a gift. I've only told 2 strangers the truth and that was only because they were with their own sweet little furbabies and had chatted about their own experiences first. After reading the thread by pawever Yorkie with her little Mini almost stolen before her eyes, I'm even more fearful now. I am usually very cautious if I'm walking Rio alone, but now I think I will wait until my DH can walk with us. I'm just so scared - Rio is our baby, our love of our life. :( |
Yes i have been asked this many times just say not nearly what he/she is worth |
I will usually answer this question with my own - "why do you want to know?" If they are truly interested in a yorkie the conversation usually continues...if they are just being nosy, I change the subject or excuse myself. |
I have been asked, and sometimes even if I put them off with a joking comment ("too much!"), people persist. I generally counter by telling people what they should expect to pay for a well bred yorkie in this area, followed up by why it's a bad idea to look for a cheap one, etc. It's always an opportunity to educate people. :) Also, if you're concerned about theft, you can always tell people that your dog has an expensive medical condition and/or is fixed - these make the dog less valuable. |
micah - now isn't that the truth, eh? thats the perfect response!! i say that mine is a gift from my hubby, its the kind of question that feels like it leads to judgement and then i feel defensive... |
I never answer when they ask that. I never think that it is any of their business. If they want to know how much they cost, get on the internet! |
Yes, I have been asked that before, but it's not something that happens frequently. (I guess since I'm usually dogless when I meet people, that may have something to do with it.) Actually, the only people I can remember off hand asking that were in-laws...but they are all nosy anyway. They also like to ask questions like how much my house is worth, how much I bought my car for, and how much I make at work. (Nosy gits!) In any event, I just skirt around the question. Ppl usually don't linger on it for long and take the hint without me having to come out and say, "that's really none of your business." |
I am with you on that!! I have had a few ask me that... My responce is... "Enough" then I move on... I figure, hey I did the research so can they!! Quote:

THANK YOU so much for that laugh about the inlaws. You Must love them (I dont like mine, I'll admit it, and I never talk to them) LOL. But again, thanks for the laugh! |
I get asked that alot. I usually tell a fib and say I don't know they were a gift. It scares me because I'm afraid someone wants to steal them for money. |
This happens often - frankly I think it is rude. I always reply with oh you don't want to know and then I smile and try to change the subject. |
Not even my husband knows what I pay! that is my secert to take to the grave...rofl |
Not TOO many have asked me, though it has happened. Most people just say "oh yorkies are expensive huh?" I use that as a time to educate. Just b/c you spend a fortune on one doesn't mean it's worth it. Also if you look for the cheapest one out there, that is also what you're getting. If someone flat out asks how much we paid, we usually lie. |

People asked me before but I usually told them 1/2 the price we've paid for Sandy. Only a couple of our friends know how much we actually paid for him, they think we're crazy! |
I get 2 kinds of questions, Some ask me how much (I never tell how much) because then they say I would never pay money for a dog. Others will tell me how much they paid for their dog, I guess that their dog is better then mine:rolleyes: |
I get asked that question quite often, I think it is so rude and would never ask that! |

I would say, "I would never pay for a DOG either, that is why I bought Cerise, my YORKSHIRE TERRIER" and then look at them like they are CRAZY and walk away! :D |
This is the line I use when I am asked the how much question or the "is she for sale" question "I don't know how much you have in your banking account, but if you take all that you have and triple it, you wouldn't have 1/2 the amount." I usually get a  look as I :D |
I tell him how much he cost me so far (purchase price and vet visits and premium food). I've had him for 3 years so that figure usually turns them running in the other direction. If they stick around and are still interested. I use it as an educational opportunity. I got Jamie from a lady whose daughters yorkie boy and her yorkie girl had an "uh oh" litter. Thankfully both mommy and daddy came from good breeders and were good representations of the breed. So Jamie is a beautiful, sweet boy but he also has an underbite and LP in his knees. I explain how important it is to really educate themselves on temperment and food and medical needs and to find an experienced caring breeder. I refer people here and also to a couple of really great breeders in the state. I know anytime someone sees my sweet baby they're gonna want a yorkie. I make it look so easy. ;) Especially around tax time people can easily come up with the $800 we paid for Jamie. I want to make sure that people understand that owning a dog is a long term commitment and that having a yorkie is just like having a baby, time consuming and expensive! |
I just say, "He is priceless!" |

I agree with you all - it's a rude question and I don't divulge what I paid. I think the scariest times are when I'm alone walking Rio and strangers ask me. You know when you have that feeling in your gut that their curiosity is coming from a more "sinister" motive. Don't get me wrong, it's not like a I live in a not-so-desirable community. I live in a quiet suburb of the SF Bay Area. I guess I'm paranoid. |
I get asked that once or twice each time I'm out with Josephine. I have yet to have an outing without that question. Yes, yorkies have a rep. for being expensive, but so are braces, but you don't see people going up to strangers asking them how much those cost them. It's just rude. I mean it really irks me. I usually just take it and give them a cutesy answer and flash a smile, but just recently I cracked. Enough was enough. I am in the Hallmark store minding my own buissness and this lady, with so much botox in her face she looks like an alien, approaches me and starts asking me if Josephine is yippy and when I say no, we picked her breeder because of the disposition of their dogs, she gives me this look like "BS". Which I was impressed with because I didn't think her face was capable of movement. Then she asks the question, "Oh how much did you pay for it?" "Oh I just stole her." She sort of half laughs, but stops when I don't join in. The whole time my whole demeanor is just deadpan. She kinda looks around to see if anyone heard me and then makes a hurried excuse and leaves the store. Worth it. |

I think some people have nothing better to do then get their noses in other peoples business. Its rude and annoying. I have a buggy for my boys and I have had people say... "You actually have a buggy for your dog?" Did you buy it like that or did you create it.. usualy said in a laugh. I just say yea, whats it to ya. I can't stand people that are rude. I had a few that said... OH COOL a doggie buggy, I bet you like knowing where your babys are at all times, I agree and let out a sigh!! lol |
Well for me it depends on who's asking the question. If it's a random stranger just being rude I just ignore the question. However, if its' someone who I think is actually interested in buying a Yorkie then I'll tell them all the research I did before I bought mine and refer them to the YTCA website for a breeder referral and normally I don't mind telling them how much mine cost. |
