Pet odor and carpet stains Hi I don't know if there was a thread like this before but i need son urgent advise. My Yorkie is 80% potty trained and sometimes still has a accident and go on the carpet. I tried products from the vet which is suppose to neutralize the smell but it does'nt seem to work to good. I need some advise on how to get rid of the smell and manage to get my baby not to go there again. If anyone has some advise please all is welcome. I need as much advise and info as possible. Please help ! ! ! Thank you :) |
Spot cleaning is good but you also need to steam clean also. I got mine at Walmart but you can rent steam cleaners too. |
Vinegar helps to neutralise the urine. That's what our breeder suggested. |
Thanks appreciate the comments. I think i will try the vinegar and see if that works. Thanks again. |
vinegar So i tried the vinegar this weekend and must say wow that did work. I think i will do it one more time. It is not really necessary because the one time was sufficient enough. I'll recommend this to anyone from now on. Thank you for the great remedy. |
Another trick that I use is Baking Soda. Right when they have had their accident, pour about 1 cup on the spot and it will leach the urine out while neutralizing the uric acid in the carpet. Of course then you have to steam clean the spot, but it does get the smell out asap. |

I also do the baking soda and vinegar. As soon as Reesie has an accident I pour baking soda on the spot. I pour enough to soak up the urine and then I pour a little bit more. A cup is a good starting point though. I let that sit for about 15 min or so and then take a broom and sweep it into a dust pan. Then I pour vinegar on the spot and let that sit for about 15 min and then get a towel to soak up the vinegar. It works every time and I have no urine smell. Cheap and effective! :) |
When Rosie has an accident I soak up all the pee with kitchen roll untill the carpet feels dry, then use fabric softener over the area. Some-one told my sister this trick and she passed it onto me. |
It's impossible to get the scent out of the carpet because it's down in the carpet pad. Best thing to do is not to let her on the carpet at all unless your right there on the floor with her to catch her if she even tries. If a puppy has peed on any carpet even one time, that's all it takes to continue a life long bad habit. |
I love Natures Miracle, it contains enzymes, which are really good bacteria that "eat" the proteins in urine an feces. Many products including viniger and baking soda will neutralize the odor to a human nose, but a dog's sense of smell is 1000 times more powerful than a humans sense of smell, and if a dog can smell any urine, he will be compelled to return to the spot and mark it again. That why pee pads work, they are treated with a slight urine smell that humans don't detect, but a dog does. There are numerous products that say they contain enzymes, but Natures Miracle is the best I that used for eliminating any stain as well. |

Does the vinegar take the stain out too or just eliminate the odor? |

To the OP, I have used Nature's Miracle and it is just that, a miracle. |
I have to say on the spots that I've used the baking soda and vinegar on Reesie has never returned to them. The vinegar does a good job to neutralize the urine. |
I know it is a lot to read but it worked for me What i did at the end of the day is search on the internet and got the baking soda trick and vinegar on there. For the vinegar solution i used 1/2 vinegar 1/2 warm water depending on the size of the carpet and obviously the stain. i sprinkled the mixture on the carpet until it was wet but not soaking wet. Next i took the broom and went over the wet area for the solution to spread right through to the fibers of the carpet. Left if for about 15 minutes and luckily my boyfriend has a carpet cleaning business so we used the machine to soak out all of the vinegar solution. You can however soak it up with a towel. The carpet was sill a bit damp but only like 20%. Sucked out about 80% of the solutions. Then i sprinkled the baking soda over the carpet. Left it there for the whole of the night and just vacuumed the carpet the next morning. The stain and smell is gone. So I'd say it definitely worked for me. I have to also add that i have very light cream carpets and the stains hasn't come back as yet. Good luck to all that has the same problem I know it is very frustrating. Thank you for all the helpful comments. |
I have always used Nature's Miracle too and was so pleased with it. Especially when I would find a dark dried area that my Maddie had hidden for me (I didn't see it when wet, and it dried gold color on my light carpet). Nature's Miracle always removed the stain. Imagine my surprise when I was smelling urine in a bedroom but couldn't find any spots due to the carpet color. Got a blacklight flashlight and found the spot right away. For grins, I used it on my light colored carpet also and almost croaked when I saw all the "glowing" spots. With the lights on, you couldn't see anything except clean carpt. With the flashlight it looked like we had stepped on little glowing aliens everywhere! So, while Nature's Miracle may "clean" the stain, and neutralize the odor, it evidently doesn't "clean" everything. Something still glows. I am having my carpet cleaned! |

We bought the black light too, and you will find that if you spray the little spots, and give it time, they will disappear. It takes time for the enzymes to actually eat the protein. We had a neighbor's cat come in a spray in the house; it was the most horrible odor, yet we couldn't find the exact spot. We used the black light to detect the spot, and it took about 4-6 doses of Nature's Miracle to completely eradicate the odor and spot, that was only visible with a black light. |

thanks, I am going to give that a try until I can get the carpet cleaned. I think most of the spots are from when she was first brought home and too "cute" for the kids to keep a close eye on. most are really small spots, but they definately glow! |
Where do you get a black light from? |

you know the clorox that you can clean your counter's with they even advertise that you can spray it right on a baby's high chair, well this is what i use on my carpet works great! I have a lite yellowish carpet in the living room and off white berber in the bedrooms and it works great I just spray it on direct out of the bottle and clean with a wet washcloth. works for me, he does not got back to these spots, we are still in training too what fun! I think the name is clorox anywhere |
I have a blacklight bulb that we had from halloween. If I just put this in a regular small lamp and went around shining it on the floor, it will show urine stains? |
