Less than "perfect" puppy? New to YT (but been "lurking" for a while now :p) and was hoping to get some advice. I have always had a dog, but just one at a time. We have a 5 year old mini schnauzer who we love. My daughter is about to turn 13 and is in love with Yorkies and desperately wants one. We discussed it and researched the breed and thought it would be a good fit for our lifestyle. Daughter is old enough to help now, so having 2 dogs wouldn't be bad. We've set a budget for the puppy purchase which I realize is on the low side, but that's as high as dh will go. :) This is going to be a pet, so my main concerns are health and temperament. Found a breeder who I like- not a puppy mill, responsible, AKC registered, well-socialized, health guarantee, etc. She has 2 pups in our price range. She's selling them for less because one she isn't sure its ears are going to stand up and the other has a slight overbite. Should we go ahead and get one? I really like the look of the pointy ears. Anyone have a Yorkie with an overbite? Is it harmful in any way? Does the dog look really odd? Thanks from a newbie in AL! |

I don't know much about an overbite- i'd imagine it is better than an underbite- There might be some dental issues with an overbite but Yorkies should have their teeth cleaned daily anyways- so you might be able to avoid possible issues. I'd just make sure that those are the ONLY health issues. Make sure both parents have been liver tested and don't have any other health issues. Have you seen a picture of either pup? Or are you able to visit them? |
Oh and i almost forgot- WELCOME to Yorkie Talk! |
|
Depends on the overbite and floppy ears wouldn't necessarily bother me. I would think it's a possiblity that one or both are going to be on the large size but that wouldn't bother me either. If you have a low price range, this might be the way to go for you.... Good luck! |
Thanks! I've seen pictures the breeder has posted online (they both look cute as can be to me). She allows people to come to her house and see the puppies, parents, etc. so we're trying to set up a time for tomorrow. |

I'm curious- what makes you think they'd be large? I'm a newbie but I can't imagine what in the info I gave would lead you to think that? I do not want a tea cup- a teeny, tiny, less than 4 pounder. Too fragile for kids and I worry about the increased propensity for health issues. Was hoping to get one in the 5-7 lb. range. |

What size are the parents do you know? how old are the puppies now? did she give you a current weight? |
Both the ears and the bite, are minor flaws so a breeder would sell these dogs at lesser prcie which is good news for a buyer. If you get to go to the house, meet the parents, get paperwork for the dog--innoculations and wormings done, etc. it sounds like you might have the right breeder. If you like the puppies, go for it. Sounds pretty good so far. |
That's the plan- go with dh to see them, make sure they are healthy and friendly/ socialized. If we like one, leave a deposit and take daughter next weekend to get it. :) |

Puppies are 11 weeks old. Breeder says they are up to date on everything, only thing they need is rabies ( I assume they aren't old enough for that yet?). She offers a one year health guarantee. Lol. I've asked everyone else I've talked to about size, but not her. So not sure, don't have weights or anything. |

a GENERAL "rule of thumb" is to double their 12 week weight and that will be your final weight. - sidenote- one sign of a great breeder is one that won't let them go home until 12 weeks- sounds like you did a great job finding your breeder! |

Welcome to YT, hope all works out for you. Please let us know. |

Don't worry about the size. There is no guarantee even if you do see the parents. Hey at 11 weeks the ears can still come, up....we'll help you. and the overbite. That can straighten itself up...pup still has it's milk teeth and she's not finished growing. |
Congrats! Jackson has a slight over-bite but you can't tell, it's not visible unless your like sitting underneath his chin lol. It doesn't affect his health, eating, etc in any way. He was 5.5lbs when I got him at 9 weeks old and now at 1 year, he's 12lbs! His parents were both below that. So ya never know. |
I've learned so much here already- didn't know about the toy breeds not leaving the breeder until 12 wks until I got on YT. Another breeder I talked today was going to let us take a 6 week old pup. Yikes!! Nope, not concerned with perfection appearance-wise. Our schnauzer is a horrible example of the breed standard (huge bat ears that stick up instead of folding over for one), but we think she's precious and love her! |

- 6 weeks is CRAZY early- huge red flag! |

It sounds like you have your basis covered, so I just want to remind you to post pictures of your new furbaby when it comes home! Reading this has me all excited for your daughter...Oh, and I also think the floppy ears are just so darn cute! Love them! ETA: Welcome to YT!! |
Welcome to YT, I have a breeder in Georgia where I got my 2 male yorkies. I didn't know what I was doing either. Hobbes (10 months old) has a overbite ( vet says he is fine) he also chooses to have floppy ears which is so cute. The breeder offered to tape them but I told her no. His parents weighed 7-8 lbs and he now weighs 12.5 lbs. So much to love and he is the sweetest big lap dog I have ever owned. The breeder raises her puppies in her house and handles them and loves on them all the time. She had already started potty training and doing small grooming skills when I got Hobbes. He was 13 weeks old when I brought him home. She did such a great job, when his parents had the next litter I went and got his brother and he is a little guy and feisty. |
Welcome to YT!! not sure about the overbite b ut I can tell you my Chloe's ears are floppy and I love how they look! My vet wanted to tape them or use some apparatus to make them stand but I didn't want to, Shes no show dog but shes perfect to me!! |
I'm a newbie to this site, too and am glad to find y'all!!! As far as the overbite and ears...you never know. I had yorkies 20 years ago and because of health and work problems had to find my babies new homes. Now the kids are gone and hubbie is retired (I'm still working40 hrs!). My daughter visited with her newly adopted abused baby and I had the itch all over again! Got my Sasha in August ant grand daughter Celeste helped name her. Anyway, Sasha has ears on the large side and they flopped. So I shaved them down and they still didn't come up. I put a piece of clear packaging tape on them to hold them up and voila! Ears came up! They fell again in a day or so and the tape went back on for about three days. Those ears are up for good now but I still keep them shaved at the tips. I like to see the points. Those floppy ones are adorable, too and they look so cute with them. Sashas were sort of lopsided when we got her at 3 months. |
Chip has an slight overbite and Smokey has floppy ears, has a little bit of an underbite, and is 2 1/2 times the size of average yorkies. Both are perfect enough for me! Congrats on your decision to get a yorkie! They are great dogs and as long as the health and temperment are good, you and your family will fall in love with any of the two. Welcome to YT! |
hi and welcome - Im a newbie too and have learned so much more than i thought possible on this site already :) i have no advice on picking one over the other regardng the overbite & ears, but what I believe is that when I went to pick a puppy the pup ended up picking me - maybe you'll feel whats right when you get to meet them! looking forward to seeing pics of your newest addition :) |
I called about a couple and answered an ad or two online but Sasha was the first I actually saw. I'm a fool for a yorkie and I drove about 90 miles one way for her. I live in a small town and moved here almost 4 years ago. I am SHOCKED at the young age people are letting the pups go. A co-worker bought her boston terrier from a breeder at 6 weeks! This is common here and if my girl has pups, they will NOT leave home so young. |
I'm having trouble getting my picture to show. Any help out there? |
Disregard the last message! I figured it out. ;-} |
Congrats on getting a new puppy and welcome to YT. Great site, I wish I found it sooner when my search began for a yorkie. I was lucky enough to learn so much when I purchased my latest baby. :D My one girl has big ears, thin, long and crazy wild lol She is even a possible mix but hey I love her and shes perfect in my eyes. Can't wait to see pictures of your new baby! I say get a boy if you can, I love my boy, he is SO sweet and lovable! |
