I personally would not risk walking him off lead. One never knows what might pop up..another dog, a cat...just to many possibilities. I just think it's safer to keep him on a lead. Boy, they do love to play fetch, don't they. You're going to have great fun!

I always just use my show lead for walks and walk him on your left side (I believe it is the same in UK). My Prize loves to play soccer. He has his fashionable cut now that he is a champion. I have a girl in wraps for showing now. I think she likes them, it keeps her coat up out of her way when at home and just being my pet.

Oops - I have two in wraps - how easily we forget all the the work. I girl and one boy in wraps for show. I will have two girls soon - a younger girl gettign older and her coat is almost ready for wraps.

he doesnt mind being in wraps at all, i just want to make sure im doing everything right,
is it possiale to walk him on a harness or anything because he will be coming on camping hols with us still and he will prob want to have a fun around on the beach. when we go camping, he will still have his wraps on, and be re - done every day lol.

i just would like him 2 be able to have a run round on the beach.

also, does anyone ever say things about them in their wraps?

You do not want sand to get in his coat or grass or straw, leaves, etc... I have let mine run on the beach once, but then I washed her right away afterwards and back in wraps. Not really - some ask and I just explain. They do make black plastic wraps with black colored bands.

the min he comes off the beach, he will be bathed. we usually stay in a static caravan and we take a baby bath on hols with us so i can bath the dogs lol. he would be bathed straight from the beach,

what about harnesses? it would only be on hols he would have a harness and only when we go to the beach, would it be ok to use one just for then?

Okay for sure keep him in wraps on b each and walks. Razzle swims in his wraps - but you've got to change them after the swim. Now I'm talking about swimming in lake water. For and if you swim in indoor pools - get a clarifying shampoo and use after the swim. And of course blow dry - oil - rewrap.

Alright in terms of walks. there are a couple of schools of thought (at least)

Always walk on the show lead - this is to enforce the head up - that is important for a show dog particularly Yorkies. Put the show lead doesn't necessarily guarantee head up. You do by rewarding the head up behaviour.

Harness - will help to mitigate any pressure on the neck - You do know that Yorkies are prone to collapsing trachea? so even in a show lead you need to keep the collar up and under chin. If your dog doesn't pull at all that may not be an issue.

My belief is that dogs understand the difference. If you continue to train - here is how I want you to walk in X circumstance with this show lead . and here is how you can be with this harness then the dog gets it.


Most importantly try to find a Yorkie Club - or an obedience/show club near to you and join them. You will find a wealth of information, hands on support with them. They will also know the in's n outs of English show requirements.

so i can use a harness on hol without it ruining his coat? he wont be off lead on the beach so he wont be going swimming haha. im sorry i have asked so much and prob will again soonlol.

I don't use regular leads for walks....they do require a collar and hate tugging on those......collapsed trachea.

All my dogs are pets, but there is a fine line on how they are treated when they are in the ring. You must keep up their training.....

Harnesses and regular leads will ruin his coat.....Keep him on a show lead.

Wears the coat around the neck and mats under the arms... When one is growing show coats, every precaution is taken.....doesn't always help but, why tempt the coat growing gods.

thank you everyone, i walked him earlier and even when i accidendly dropped his lead at the field he stayed right beside me so im hoping that when we go on hol he will still walk beside me lol. im goign to ring his old owner later and ask her if he ever went off lead and if he ever wanted to run around or if he stayed right by you.

i woke up this morning to the gorgeous sound of him breathing! so sweet and he got so exited when i woke up, i picked him up and he had a cuddle in mommy and daddys bed haha

It sounds like you're really enjoying him as a pet.

There are lifestyle differences when you're showing your yorkie. This is about growing coat & behavior. I'm not sure if you've mentioned it, but did you ask the previous owner why the dog was pulled from the ring? It's uncommon for someone to rehome a show dog without a contract. Has he been neutered? I'm missing some posts

Do you really want to go through all the highs & lows and WORK. Most show dogs don't get to sleep in your bed. Are you sure you want a show dog or a loving pet? All yorkies are wonderful.

My show dogs do sleep in my bed most of the time. Sorry. They are my pets first. I know, I spoil them. Oh well, they still show well though. And coats are very nice and long. I just wrap them. Yes, it is a lot of work to keep a dog in coat! But well worth it.

Your right Tina, everyone does things differently and does what works for them...And of course things are done differently in Europe......

But, I do think the OP stated the reason dog was rehomed because of moving back home, I don't think he was pulled from the ring, but given/sold to the OP with the condition that she would continue on showing him. Things are done differently in Europe, a bit easier to obtain a show dog than here. Things aren't as strict there.
