How much $$$ for a Yorkie--your thoughts Ok so I'm just interested in what everyone thinks...How much do you think is reasonable to pay for a Yorkie? Asuming the pup comes with a great health guarantee, parents have been through all the testing, and you really feel comfortable with the breeder??? I'm looking forward to your replys...:aimeeyork |
It depends, pedigree's make a difference, pet only I would never pay more than $2000.00. Breeding rights depends on pedigree. |
I paid $1200 for Carson. I got him at 5 months. He came from a very good breeder in Michigan and he is worth every penny of it and more !! After I brought Carson home I crossed out the $1200 on the bill of sale and wrote $600.00 I told my Husband I got him for 600 because he was 5 months old LOL |

I did that twice . . .what he doesn't know, won't hurt him . . .:p I felt bad doing it, but he wouldn't understand or even consider spending over $1,000 for a dog . . .he has no idea what groceries even cost . . .I still think he's living in the 80's . . |
I have paid a wide range for my furbabies. DH doesn't know the true cost of any of them though. :p |

Mine are from $1,200.00 to $2,000.00 |
oh my.. first of all I wouldnt keep a secret like that from my hubby, because I certainly wouldnt want the situation to be the other way around.. lol..that I would feel too guilty..:) but hey to each thier own. :)I couldnt justify paying more than 500.00 for a healthy pet qualitly dog.. for a show dog, breeder etc.. I wouldnt pay more than 1000.00 BUT the going rates for dogs in my area is pretty low and honestly when I first joined this group and discovered what some of you paid for your yorkies I just about fell out of my chair..the more reading I did and learning, I understood why you paid what you did..:) |

$1,000 for a show dog in NY.......I don't think so, not even a pet would go for that and I know several breeder/exhibitors on the east coast. |
I would pay the asking price get the yorkie I wanted from a great breeder and health guarantee. I would rather pay upfront and have a better chancde of a healthy, bred to standard yorkie than have tons of vet bills. I paid 1500 for one of mine that I did not research the breeder (before YT) and ended up with a sick puppy and enormous vet bills. I have paid from 1000 to 2500. So while cost doesn't guarantee a healthy dog, I have found in my area to get a dog from a reputable breeder you will pay 1000 or more. The one I paid 2500 for was exactly what I was looking for and my husband paid for her as a gift. Best gift I ever got! |
It seems like 1200-1800 is the typical cost around here in FL from all my research. But of course, I'm seen some for way more and way less. Just depends on the breeder and the dog. |

I used to think people were crazy for paying over $500 for a dog, and I really thought $500 was pushing it. But now I am one of those crazy people :p and realize the importance in finding a responible breeder and am willing to pay to make sure I get that. There are tons of dogs listed locally for a lower price, but I also see where they come from most of the time and it is not where I would want to purchase one of my furbabies from personally. |

I don't know about upstate, but I have a Very reputable breeder here on LI who "breeds to show" and my furbaby is 2k. Getting her 1/26/10 BTW!!! Can't wait!!:) |
Correct me if I'm wrong but can't you "register" any dog with the AKC? AKC doesn't mean good/healthy/breed standard...right??? |
Like my Mama always told me - you get what you pay for. Just look at cars for example - there are lots of different prices based on the kind/make of car it is. If you want a really nice one - don't expect to get one for a thrift store bargin price. The dogs I have - I paid a lot for and expected that. I did not want to settle for less. I knew it cost a lot (in time and money) to breed the very best. |

Yes, as long as the parents are both AKC. I have seen some pretty horrible places that have AKC registered dogs. That is why research is so important. |

Now AKC does have a new program where dogs that are not registered may - but it is only giving them a number to be in rally/obediance competition, not confirmation, and they must be spayed or neutered. So this group cannot have a litter. |

My DH bought my Pixie and paid 1500, she was my 30th wedding anniversary gift! I told a fib to my kids how much she cost though! lol |
I was also thinking and wanted to bring this up. If you are looking to pay the least for a pup - don't expect the breeder to do what they need to do to produce nice healthy pups of any quality. I always think of what cut backs they made in order to save and thus sell their pups lower to move them out. You might save when buying, but expect to pay more at the vets. So you really are not saving, but bought your way into a huge headache, less money in your own pockets, and more worries and heartache. I have heard such sad stories, where people have tried to save. Yes, you have to do your research and on the other hand you do not want to pay too much for a pup not worth it. One should educate themselves before buying. |
