Mine is "off the charts," too, and both parents were in between 6.5 and 7 lbs. At 9 weeks, she weighed 38.4 oz. At 10 weeks, she weighed 50 oz. That's a gain of 30% in one week. That would be like a teenager going through a growth spurt and going from 100 lbs to 130 lbs in one week, skeleton and all. :eek: Every week except for two her growth rate (%) was in the double digits. At 15 weeks, she was 91 oz, tomorrow I weigh her at 16 weeks, who knows how much she will have grown then. I brought a spreadsheet with her weekly growth and % growth per week to show the vet, he just laughed and said "That's amazing!" (Maybe he was laughing at the geeky pet owner that brings in a spreadsheet with growth rate calculations, I dunno). He said it wasn't a problem in small breeds, but would be a problem in larger breeds. She is definitely thriving and healthy, and since she is a companion and won't be used for breeding, health is the primary concern and larger and sturdy is fine. We are thinking of changing her name to "Yorkzilla." |
thank you all for the replies and warm welcomes! My lil boy is almost 12 weeks and when i weighed him the other night he was right at 5 lbs..i dont mind him being a little bigger than "standard" but my husband worries that he will get too much bigger than our Bella. personally i think Rocco will be short and stumpy and just really wide and thick :p i will have him weighed more accurately at his health exam. thanks again! i can already see i will love it here and soon be on this site every day! :) |
When Lucas was 12 weeks, he was 3.5 or 4lbs. He is now 1 year and 4 months, and holding steady at 6 lbs. So if your boy is only 5 lbs at 12 weeks, I don't think he'll be anywhere near 20lbs. Lucas was off the chart too, I believe, but he is now totally average sized :) |
Sherman will be 6 months on Jan 29, 2010 and he is 15.3 pounds and gaining steadily. He is not overweight at all per the vet. He is strong and sturdy. In the litter of 5 pups there was a bro and sis weighing just below 5 pounds and then two bros just over 10 pounds and then Sherman Tank at just over 15 pounds. Mom was just over 8 pounds dad was just over 6 pounds. There was such a huge difference of weights in the same litter that I dont see how anyone can predict the weight of a puppy. Somewhere in mom and dads genes there was an EXTRA LARGE SUPERSIZE yorkie gene that 3 of the 5 pups received. |
gatsby was off the charts for his age until he was about 6 mounths old then he just stoped growing at 5.5 pounds you never can know what i would do would be to prepare yoourself for a 20 pound dog then when he is smaller you will be plesently surprized |
Thanks everyone..and to OwnedbyJezebel, I think "Yorkzilla" is an appropriate nickname :D It's quite clear that no two puppies in any one litter are going to be the exact size, no matter what size the sire and dam are. Of course this doesn't give me or anyone, for that matter, any clear-cut ideas of future weight, but then nothing is guaranteed anyway. We will just wait it out and see. When I used to breed yorkies for show, I had 2 lines. One line would grow steadily but staying small. The other line would grow so big, so fast they seemed as if they would be giants among yorkies but the woul stop. I knew what to expect because of familiarty of how the lines grew. If you don't have that information, it's pretty much weight and see, but the charts seem to be a decent tool. The older the puppies, the better I think the chart applies |
