I think floppy ears are adorable. Anyways... It's a dog..... they are amazing no matter what they look like so it shouldnt matter. Lucy's ears didn't go up until she was almost 6 months old...... |
eew that does seem harsh, I think shes just wondering for the typical style of the breed...... I taped macies ears for less than 2 days, and they have stayed up the whole time since, I regretted doing it so soon but I never dreamed they would take so well, mabey thats why they did because she was so young, but was afraid that I would wait till it was to late, but I think there so cute floppy as a puppy and she is only 9 weeks so I get so excited when she wakes up they look a tad "loose" haha, but they havent majorly went back yet...I heard over all its best they stand up to keep from being moist and icky if they flop over so thats why I was shooting for them to stand up, from things Id heard neg about the flop, but each to his own I guess, do you prefer one way or the other???? |
Wow - I can't believe that everyone is getting so uptight over this. According to the AKC, the breed standard for Yorkies is 'Ears are small, V-shaped, carried erect and set not too far apart". This is why people are considering it to be a "flaw" if the ears are floppy. My yorkie girls ears stand straight up, and have since they were 5-6 weeks of age, BUT they are also pretty big, not "small" as the breed standards say they should be. That must mean my girls are flawed too. OH WELL! We can't all be perfect. I know that I certainly am NOT! :p Is it a full moon or something? Everyone seems awfully touchy lately. I'm sure if I really wanted to critique my furbabies, I could find MANY flaws, but who cares really? Just love them for who they are! |

To the OP: how old is your yorkie? Tate's ears went up and down several times when he was teething. Keeping the hair on the ears trimmed does help a lot. Now his ears are always up, unless he's played so hard he's just worn himself out - then one of them droops about halfway down. I think that's so cute!! |

Lola just turned a year old this week, her ears stood straight until last month. I think because the hair on her ears were getting to heavy and started to make them flop. The groomer came yesterday and gave Lola a haircut, I asked her to take some hair off her ears and they finally started to stand again. |
Well I came across this while I was reading up on neuticles and other interesting subjects, some of the 'ears up camp' may be interested in. Seeing as they call it the 'PermaStay', I thought it was an implant which would allow you to threaten your dog to sit by webcam or cell phone, or maybe page him if he was roaming, but sadly it is not, it is, however, a new ear-perker technology: Neuticles.com The other thing I wanted to relay, while my tongue was in my cheek, is that Frisco and I took a closer look at his anatomy today, and his ears are made of something like baloney on top, quite unlike the cat's, and, so, would seemingly require permanent braces and duct tape to lift. (We trust that doesn't overly enthuse the AKC folks.) And we also discussed the fair and proper disqualification of show yorkies whose ears have been artificially perked, for use of performance-enhancing ear products. Now I will remove my tongue from my cheek, and dangle it part way out my mouth where it belongs :) |
ears down too Alfie's ears are down too and maybe it's a flaw too but it doesn't matter, love your pet because they are yours, and its good that they are different, wouldn't care if Alfie had no ears haha.....we all love him so much he is such a little character x |
Ears Right after we got our puppy one ear started to fall. We read up on it and there was a lot of talk about trimming the hair. All well and good, but our Yorkie didn't have heavy hair on his ears. One person told us to try foods that were high in calcium content. We did that and the popped right back up and have stayed there! |

My Little "flawed boy" 1 Attachment(s) Ears are overrated anyway!!! lol Here is my little flawed Oliver!! I love him flaws and all......but whats more important......HE LOVES ME WITH MINE!! :D |
Ears Ears up or ears down. Gotta luv em! |
Our little Harlie's ears were standing straight up when we got her about 10 days ago, she's now 10 weeks old. 4 days in, her left one flopped, 7 days in and her right has the same floppyism :). I was worried at at first and taped the left ear for 2 days...did no good. When the right one fell, it didn't bother me a bit. I was told that if they stood at one point in time, they'll stand again. Now, I could care less because my Yorkie is the cutest Yorkie ever in the entire universe :p :D :D. |

Quote: A flaw if you showing your dog maybe but I dont see my baby as flawed at all and I hate for it to be said like that............ I agree that it 'sounds' insulting to be told that your pups ears are 'flawed', even though that might not be what the poster meant. But from what I've read here some dog's ears didn't stand up till a year old. Were they 'flawed' till then and not now?? I am thankful that society hasn't decided that we all had to meet a certain standard or criteria or we would be considered flawed....not just different...but flawed! :-) Plus, I don't think it would be as hurtful to owners to say that to 'improve the breed" or to "show" a Yorkie their ears should be erect. This is not intended to be an argument...just my opinion...which just may be 'different' from others. LOL |

My Brodie has one ear standing up and one ear floppy right now but he is as cute as can be... I do hope the other on does eventually stand up also but he is still young. He is only 9 weeks old so there is time. I am first time Yorkie owner and always had big dogs like German Shepherds, Labs and most recently a 160 lb Great Dane! He is sure a change and is just like a little baby. We love him to death! |
My 2 month old yorkie has floppy ears. I love her the way she is. |

I was told to massage their ears to get the circulation going better and so i thats what I've done with my Marley before, and Izzy, and now Madlyn. And so far they've all ended up with erect ears. Madlyn's flop down sometimes but she's teething so that's to be expected. And she's only 12 weeks old. Plus they seem to like their ears rubbed. Now, Toby has floppy ears but I didn't even try to massage his. He looks like a little german teddy bear with his floppy ears and I love it. |
Lola ears flop I'm just going to let her be herself if they pop up great if not also great she is adorable with them down... |
Floppy ears are ok :) |
I like floppy ears, my baby girl Minnie had them and they were so adorable. |
Not a breeder so I'm just guessing but I think the word flaw is a term used by people who show dogs and the judges. Nothing us layman need to worry about. We love our "Pet" yorkie ears anyway they come. I've often wondered when I see one with HUGE ears, sky high on the sides of their heads ( Yoda like) if that was natural or someone taped them to stand when they would have actually looked cuter floppy. If you have one, don't get offened, they are cute in their own unique way. |
Hi everyone, my 4 1/2 lbs baby has floppy ears which I love. She just turned a year old. When I first got her they where up, then down, then up, then one up and one down and now both down. Does anyone have any cute grooming ideas for babies with floppy ears, I am thinking about doing a Korean cut, like I have seen on maltese with long ears. |

but please upload a pic if you do korean cut :) really interested in how it comes out :) |
