How did your furbaby(ies) aka Yorkie get their name?

I am sure there were other threads posted on this subject matter. However, I have been on this site for a short time and I have been amazed at the names that Yorkie owners give to their babies. SO if you feel like sharing please do. Since I am relatively new to this site, and an extreme novice, please don't redirect to me other posts/threads about this because knowing me, I will get lost (Chuckle, Chuckle). I apologize beforehand for the LONG testimony and if you want you can scroll down

So, I will share how Hugo got his name. Years ago, I remember the first time I saw a Yorkie was in Pet CO in Manhattan. Knowing nothing about this breed or dogs for that matter, I thought it was the most amazing furball I ever saw-I was hooked. I did preliminary research to get one and learned how expensive they were. I was a college student back then, earning a meager wage. Soon after my encounter with that furbaby, I would see more of them. However, I only thought that this dog was for the upper class and manhattan socialites/fashionistas. I gave up hope. Not to mention as a young child I had a pekeineese chihuhua mixed dog named "Brownie" that was my loyal companion. Brownie was taken from me and I vowed that I will never love another dog again! I then began helping a friend of mine window merchanize stores in Manhattan wich led me to work behind the scenes in Fashion week. Once I saw the HUGO Boss brand I thought to myself if I ever get a Yorkie, I will name him Hugo. While working behind the scenes I saw some designers and models and execuitves in fashion walking with their pooches in designer purses. Some were chihuahuas and saw some yorkies. However, that was the first time I saw yorkies with long flowing hair with bows and cute outfits. When I met Hugo, I knew that he will be named Hugo because as strage as it sounds, it was like we were meant to be together. So Hugo's name reflects my favorite designers Hugo Versace Fendi! Oh yes, Hugo is SPOILED!!!

My yorkies have a registered name and a call name.

Their registered name is with either my kennel name and/or the kennel where I obtained them and usually followed with a theme of their particular line. Their call name is usually something to do with their personality.

My daughter named him a year before we even got him. She named him after the disney character from the high school musical franchise. So now we have a Troy.

When my youngest daughter was 4 (she is 8 now) she wanted to name our next pet..Ashley.. so when we got our beagle pup.. she named her Ashley.. but then after a few days decided that she liked Abby better but wanted to keep Ashley in her name.. so our beagle's offical name is.. Abby Ashley Isabella Arzie...:animal36...

rx8holly 01-08-2010 09:48 AM

My daughter also named my Yorkie (Bella). She says she didn't get it from Twilight, but I don't know... :D

Her Name Is Rio 01-08-2010 09:49 AM

My favorite group is Duran Duran and I love their song "Rio". So I named Rio, as in "Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand..." My friends and family who know me were not surprised by her name, and know she's a girl. Strangers who ask what her name is automatically assume she is a boy, and think I named her after Rio De Janeiro, Brazil or the Las Vegas Casino "Rio".

My first yorkie was named Jessie Jamie after Jessie James. We named her that name since we got her right after meeting one of my husband's uncle (by marriage) This uncle was very colorful and claimed to be a descendant of Jessie Jamies. His stories were really funny to me and made little sense, but he did make an impression on me. Unfortunately Jessie had to be put to sleep in February 3009. She was 14 and 1/2 years old. The we got another yorkie in October 09-same birthdate as Jessie -July 20th. We gave her Jessie's middle name, Jamie as her first name. Her middle name is Yogini since I am a Yoga fanatic. Thus my new baby is Jamie Yogini. I wanted to name her Yogini as the first name but my husband hated that.

In order to get my mom on my side about getting my little one while I was staying with my parents for the summer, I tried EVERYTHING to get her to feel some sort of connection with the idea of having a dog. I tried letting her pick out clothes and accessories...that didn't work. I tried showing her pictures of all the sweet little Yorkies I saw....and that didn't work.

So I finally wrote a list of my favorite doggy names...and she chose Bella (not the most original...but I love it. lol :p). After that she started to fall in love with saying her little name. And about a month later I brought my little baby home. And my mother absolutely ADORES her. :)

Full Name: Princess Isabella Grace
*I just felt like I should just jazz it up a bit. lol ;)

lil louis 01-08-2010 10:20 AM

I named Louis after my favorite purse designer, Louis Vuitton!:)

oceansoracle 01-08-2010 10:51 AM

Fancy_Pants 01-08-2010 10:52 AM

I had Fancy's name picked out before I got her. There is/was soap opera called Passions and there was a girl on there name Fancy Crane. Well, I like the name Fancy so much that I decided when I got a yorkie that is what I would name her!

cheryl19 01-08-2010 11:07 AM

Well I wanted to name Reggie,...Rhett (I love gone with the wind) but my hubby knew what I was doing and said no way. Well Reggie is my 3rd yorkie and I told my husband he will be his dog so he has to name him. He said he looks like a Reggie

carmen in nj 01-08-2010 11:18 AM

Harry got his name because the Breeder stated in her contract that his name had to start with the letter H, she assigns a letter to each litter she breeds so Harry's name is Harrison Ford Stone..LOL my favorite actor, Prada got named by my daughter well I guess after her favorite Purse.., Chanel after Coco Chanel was named by me and Relay well my hubby got to name him..:p after an elevator part..LOL:)

ellaYORKIE 01-08-2010 11:23 AM

Ella got her name after her late mother Bella and my late mom Elizabeth. We just combined them. =]

We chose Roxies name from the broadway musical and movie Chicago. She is the perfect little villain and lives up to it. *** Funny story about her... my dad loves this girl COMPLETELY he thinks she is the most beautiful dog he has ever seen and he always calls her Roxie the Show Dog! Now all his manly friends call her Roxie the Show Dog... hilarious because shes not registered and far from show quality, but we all love her!

Ryder we chose because my husband is an over the road truck driver and we bought him with the intentions of him going with my husband.... to be his riding buddy. Turns out hes mommas boy in and out and not much of a rider after all.

Prince was our hardest.... we could not decide for days... it was like we had a child and he came home with no name. The day my husband was leaving to go back on the road he picked up our puppy kissed him and said you be good lil prince... and that was it. Our Charming Prince!

chloesMama 01-08-2010 12:29 PM

Sydney was named by a family vote. She is half Maltese and half Australian Terrier . My son ran with the Australian part and came up with Sydney and we all liked it .

Chloe was harder. We had a long list but narrowed it down to Zoe/Chloe , Phoebe , Piper ...after days of trying out the different names on her, Chloe just seemed to "fit".

Sydney's full name is Sydney Wynter Raine and Chloe's full name is Midnight Ryder Chloe Kate BUT for some reason I always end up calling them ....Little Miss Sydney Lola LaRue and Princess Chloe Fifi LaRue...I have no idea why , It was a joke that sorta stuck .

T-BonesMommy 01-08-2010 01:28 PM

T-Bone

I always wanted my own dog. I started looking for a puppy about a year ago. I never thought about getting a yorkie, but here I am with a beautiful little guy named T-Bone. I picked out his name before i even had him. I wanted this little guy to have a tuff name because he is so small. And little did I know that he would live up to his name!!! My mother and brother call him Teddy. Right now he is a very very active and crazy 4 month old, about 2 pound ball of fluff!!! But I wouldn't trade him for anything. He is my little furbaby. His full name is Theodore Bone.:aimeeyork

All I had was a photo of Jackson before I got him and couldn't think of a name. My mom actually suggested Jackson because we had just watched Walk the Line about Johnny Cash and we always liked the song "Jackson." It just kinda stuck.... always was a Michael Jackson fan too so it's kind of fitting.

Clarence was my mom's little guy before she passed away 8 years ago. She named pets & plants Clarence all the time...which is the wierdest thing I ever remember her doing!

Duncan, our cat. Before I met my DH, my friends & I would go out to clubs & I didn't want to give guys my real name so I'd tell them my name was Pam Duncan...hence Duncan.

Next came Keegan...he was a wild & crazy puppy so I went searching for his name. It is Irish for little firey one.

Sweet Sophie...her name was Sophie when we got her & she had been thru so much in her short life that I didn't change her name....I just added Sweet to reflect her personality.

Our favoirite vacation place is Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. When I was laid off my job in December 2008 I told my husband I was going to get a little dog and call her Kona. It took me 8 months to talk him into it but when I found her the name just fit.

JERSEY BOY 01-08-2010 05:00 PM

I named my little furbut Jersey Boy because he was born in Jersey and will be raised in Jersey. He's the "Boss":)

When we brought Maddie home she was so feisty and bossy and tiny that she changed the whole dynamic of our house. I wanted a sweet girly name for my sweet little girl. My brother, who was living with us at the time, told me that she caused total mayhem in our house; bossing all the other dogs arround and demanding attention, pawing at us when it was time to wake up and growling at the door when she wanted to go potty. The only cute girly name that we came up with that "went well" with Mayhem was Madison. Maddie Mae is short for Miss Madison Mayhem ;) we also call her crazy girl too.

PoloDaDog09 01-08-2010 06:52 PM

We are huge Ralph Lauren Polo fans, so his name was either going to be Ralph or Polo. We thought Polo was way better!!! :) :D

MeganS 01-08-2010 06:55 PM

Tucker was going to be named Noah. We had a puppy (we got from a pet store :() who died after a month, and the vet who worked his butt off to save him (and eventually helped us get our money back from the store) was Dr. Tucker. One day my mom and I were still trying to affirm a name for "Noah" (couldn't decide between Noah or Brady) and my dad came home and said "Dr. Tucker says *blah blah blah*." and my mom and I looked at each other and said "Tucker!" :) and that's how he got his name.

Then we chose his registered name - Tuck Everlasting - because that is one of my favorite books and I thought it was appropriate.

yorkiemama1986 01-08-2010 07:07 PM

my big clan....i have miss Laynee..she was named after my beloved girl Llana who was taken and killed and llana just seemed like she was reincarnated into laynee...same personality and loving temper.
And of course my two cats, molly (17yrs) AKA MollyMoo or Moo Cow because she is like seriously 20 lbs and fat like a cow. Lucy (10yrs) AKA LuLu or LucyLoo. Idk about her she was already named when i adopted her from the shelter.
Then there's Laynee's litter. Bubba Baloo( named from the jungle book....he's a big fat teddy bear so we named him baloo but my hubby and i decided we are changing it to "TeddyBaloo".
Stella because i always loved the name and she's my only girl of the litter so her full name is StellaRae
Howie was named after the guy on Deal Or No Deal. Howie on the show is real quiet and refuses to let people touch him and my howie is very cautious and shy so the name fit
And Gizmo because he looks like one of the little gremlins named gizmo in that movie. He's just so darn cute.lol

Our 5 year old Yorkie is named Dallas, My Husband didn't want a dog and I had wanted a yorkie kinda like you since I was maybe 16 ( now 40 ) we had a friend of the family who had one and I though it was the cutest baby I ever saw but like you thought it would be just to much ...so when I started looking 5 years ago my Husband was against having a dog period let alone one that costs this much money ...turns out he did all the research found a breeder and took me to meet my baby on my birthday ...to ensure that my Husband would fall head over heels in love w/ Dallas I named him Dallas Cowboy Reid as my Husband has been a Cowboy fan since childhood.

Now we have 16 weeks old Philly and not that we want the whole NFC of Yorkies but my Son is well you got it a Philly Eagles Fan so now when the Eagles play the Cowboys we have two the cutest mascotts ever. They will wear their little jerseys to cheer on their team :)

Love my furbabies!

Dallas Cowboy Reid :aimeeyork
Little Philly Reid :aimeeyork
