Yorkie-Russell Mix, do they look like Yorkies?
 

So alot of Yorkie-lovers out there go "Oh is he a Yorkie mix?" and after that many questions, after the guy keeps growing, after everyone looks at him confused that he's a yorkie- my husband has said for the last while "Do you think he could be mixed with Jack Russel? Wired hair maybe?"

So i googled.

Now, we know that we got Derby "cheap" and being uneducated people we were (at the time) when I was surprised with a "Yorkie" I didn't think much of it. I loved him no matter what! He looked like a Yorkie to me! I asked YT and they said Yorkie! The more he grows the more people go... are you SURE? No, No we're not SURE! And the breeders? The email no longer works to even send them updated pictures!

He's a healthy happy doggy, and we love him regardless but there's always that thought in the back of my head of "Why doesn't he look like other Yorkies? Why does everyone think he's mixed? Why are we even questioning this?" It doesn't matter to us because we love him, but identity matters :)

And if you go to this page Yorkie Russell Information, Yorkie Russells, Yorkie Jack Russell Hybrid You'll see various Yorkie/Russell mixed and if you look further down the page (the dark haired "Ponca" (with his littermate) and the other pictures of Ponca it reminds me SO MUCH of Derby!!

Any other info on Yorkie/Russell crosses???

Looks like a Derby to me! Just because we try to grow his hair, doesn't make him a Yorkie I guess... Yorkie mix he could be! Love you just the same Derby!

He is darker colored and has those longer legs.

Well Derby is HUGE! lol! almost 11 pounds now, and 6 months old! Long legs, long body, those Jack ears! I kept saying he had "Dumbo" ears, but every pic I see of a Jack-Russel mix has the same ears...at least I can grow his hair... (not that is gets long but...)

My husband said "Do I know my dogs, or do I know my dogs?"

He's said that about Derby since almost the beggining lol

Derby is 6 months old. The first picture is the most recent picture- the rest are various shots. I'm trying to find the one that looks exactly like the other dog... it's derby right out of a bath, but I can't find it.

I'm trying to grow his face like alot of Yorkie faces I see- and i think it's cute :)

He looks like a yorkie to me, except his ears are down, but I've seen lots of yorkie pics and their ears aren't up, he is super cute! :p

Derby looks adorable, a very cheeky face and I am one for floppy ears. :)

I don't really see Jack Russell... I think he's probably just a poorly bred Yorkie and I don't mean that in a bad way, lol. My boy is 12lbs at 1 year old and I get ALL the time... "That's a Silky!" or "there's no way he's a Yorkie!" I've had a few people tell me he looks like a Cairn Terrier even. Like you -- I didn't get him from a good breeder or anything but I did see his mom and a photo of the dad and they were both smaller than he is now (8 and 9 lbs) so he just kept growing, LOL. Personally, I prefer the look of the "non standard" Yorkies, I love floppy ears (even tho Jackson's aren't floppy) and I love the bigger ones... I don't know what it is, I just do.

I had an accidental litter of yorkie rusell puppies or yorkie jacks..

Jake is 5 month and 12 pound....but i think Jake is a little over weight with chrismas every one been spoiling him so i am cutting his treats down...he has also got cute floppy ears but i think if i shaved them they would stand up but i love them floppy :D Derby is so cute :D

Mixed or not, he is absolutely adorable!

He looks like a yorkie to me just a poorly bred one. Dont take that wrong either there are alot of poorly bred ones including one of mine and they resemble mixes. Everyone always tells me My Chachi is a silky because he is bigger and has bigger features. He is cute just love him for what he is a cherished pet

Still looks Yorkie to me too! He just may have a more wiry (don't know the term really) coat, and be a bit bigger, but his hair seems to be filling in nicely as he gets older. A lot of Yorkies are over 10 lbs. Ears? You want to see ears? Look at this.... (she is a Silky and weighs 8 lbs all of which are in the ears.)





She grew in to them very nicely I will add.

Here's Daisy, my granddogger! Isn't she gorgeous? She is so sweet and my daughter thinks Daisy is The Best Dog Ever! :D We rescued Daisy this summer at 10 weeks, she is now 9 months old and weighs 8 pounds. She has been a blessing for my daughter. We are sure she is a Yorkie Russell. Her vet thinks she is the cutest dog....he told me that Rily was cute, but Daisy was cuter. :rolleyes:

Everyone of the dogs in the pictures are cute, if that is what a Jack Russell and Yorkie mix looks like I want one.

The one Silky with the rather large ears is so so cute, those are some HUGE ears.

LOL, thank you, we think he is very cute too.. I know he gets LOTS of complements when we walk and at the pet stores...

I think he looks like a yorkie too, but like everyone else said, just a poorly bred one (once again, meant affectionately). I have two poorly bred yorkies, one looks like a typical yorkie, just really dark in color and the other one is huge (14 lbs), tall, skinny, long legs, silvery-white, ears down, etc. With Smokey's (the big one) body type and with as fast as he actually runs (not exaggerating... he's ridiculously fast), I'm almost convinced he's part mini greyhound.

BTW, I think Derby is adorable and I loooove his name!

Yorkies can also get their looks from their grandparents, etc. My friends yorkie is only 5 lbs and looks really small but her parents were huge. Her parents were about 3 times her size. He looks like a yorkie to me (Derby).

I have a Yorkie Jack Russell mix. he has the face, legs and torso of a yorkie and the bottom of a jack russell. He is lovely all the same.

Very Hyperactive and taking his first trip to dog training on thursday :D
