Is 5mo Yorkie Still a pup Hello all, I've been planning to surprise my family for the holidays with a new Yorkshire Terrier Puppy. I've looked all over (Local breederd, animal shelters, pet stores, petfinder) have yet to find one in my price range until yesterday. I found a 5mo. Yorkie (cute as a button) but was unsure if she's still considered a puppy or if she has puppy features. How much of a difference is there in a 5mo pup and a 2mo pup. Im sure my family would want to raise her in her earlier stages and I feel like in at 5mo. we may have missed the 1st several stages with this puppy |
A puppy is a puppy until they are 1 years old. There are breeders who wont even release a puppy until they are 12-20 weeks. No responsable Yorkie breeder would give you a puppy at 8 weeks. You are still getting a puppy, one who I hope was kept with its mom for a longer period of time which is good. A 5 month old is still GREAT. Looking back at pictures I dont see a big huge difference in my dog when she was 12 weeks to 20 weeks. |
A good breeder would not allow their Yorkie pups to leave Momma before 12 weeks of age. This little one is 20 weeks. You've not missed out on much at all! A 5 month old Yorkie is STILL plenty of puppy. You won't be disappointed. If anything...hopefully some of the potty training and crate training has been started and you just need to pick up where the breeder has left off. Also, if you have little ones in your family...the older the pup is better when it comes to Yorkies. I'm sure your family will LOVE her. Please make sure you are making a purchase with a sound breeder. There is a sticky on this website for "buying a Yorkie". GOOD LUCK! |
Definitely still a puppy and will be more playful than a 2 month old. 2 month olds are still infants. They pretty much just eat and sleep, with short periods of play. If you want one they can play with, go with the older one. |
At 5 months he/she is still going to be in the puppy stage with plenty of energy and probably still working on house training :D it's pretty much a great age and if it has been with the mother it has probably been taught it's 'manners'. There will be less worries with hypoglycemia, although I'm sure it's not completely nixed. And that's pretty much what I know but just be careful that you get him/her from a reputable breeder to make sure you get the best quality pup, but if you post this in the breeders section they will probably give you a lot more information. look around this site too it's packed full of amazing info. Yes, definately still a pup. I agree with the info given above but I would like to bring up a few things to consider. Does your family want a dog? A Yorkie? Do you know the costs that come with owning a Yorkie? How do you know that your family will like the personality of this puppy? Have you met the puppy and it's breeder? Is the puppy already potty trained? I'm not asking to put you on the spot. I'm asking because a lot of people get caught up in the cuteness of Yorkies especially around Christmas. Yorkies are expensive and I'm not talking about clothes. Yorkies are stubborn and sometimes hard to train. Maybe you already know this if you own one - I don't know. Again, I'm not trying to upset you - I just want to give you something to consider before getting the puppy. :) |

Thanks for the responses. I'd also like to know, what would be the difference in size, weight, hair length and color b/w a 2mo and 5mo pup. Is the hair at 5mo. that much greater in lenght than it is at 2mo. |

I got Missy at 5 months. :) :love: :aimeeyork She was (and still is) a puppy. She's grown (bigger and cuter!), she's full of energy, and lost a baby tooth in the last two months. But she was puppy pad trained and didn't chew on anything but her toys (ok and the occassional wooden chair leg but in her defense it was an ugly chair. :rolleyes:) You get an awesome puppy with a lot more training! |

Anything under 1 year - IMO - is still a pup. You are lucky to find an older one. Potty trained, and you have a better idea of what it will somewhat look like as an adult. So much better!! All shots too. Wow! Not so fagile as a 2 month old - Persoanaly, I would never buy a 2 month old - still has socializing to do. And a 5 month - you do not need to worry so much about hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). If he is what you want - I would jump at the chance and not let the older age stop you. It is a plus!! :thumbup: |
I would not even consider getting a 2 month old at Christmas time. No matter the weight, coat or anything else. There is to much going on around Christmas and I think it would be to stressful for a 2 month old. |
