I wouldn't consider any yorkie at any age at Christmas.....Not enough quality time for an easy transition and to introduce the dog to it's new environment.

:thumbup: I also just commented on another post that I was glad this other person decided to wait till after the holidays to pick up her pup. I won't ever let mine go over any major holiday. Too much running around and maybe too many people in the home. Not good for the pup to be picked up so much either. Not good to leave a pup alone too long when in a new home.

I agree - bringing your new puppy home can be quite traumatic for the puppy and it would be best to devote your time and energy in helping him adjust to his new home. When I brought Rio home, I actually took 2 weeks of vacation to make sure she had a smooth transition. It paid off, as she is so well adjusted and socialized.

I also am concerned that you have thought everything through - a new puppy even at 5 months may still have hypoglycemia issues that you should be prepared to deal with. And you need to start potty training/crate training (if you choose to do so) immediately to set a good foundation.

I got Rio at 16 weeks/4 months and she was every bit a puppy - rambunctious, curious, playful. But it was like bringing a baby into our lives - sleepless nights and our world revolving around our little furbaby. In fact, our world still does revolve around her and we wouldn't have it any other way!

Please don't feel defensive about our comments - we just want you to be sure you are putting the welfare of your Yorkie at the top of your priorities in getting a puppy. Your puppy will have many years, even 15 years with you if you're lucky!

Not EVERYONE's holiday is crazy. Those are the quietest and most relaxing times around here. I'm off work for several days in a row and dh is home more. I'm always amazed when someone says "you should never" or "I never do this or that", isn't every situation and every family just a bit different?

To the OP, good luck whatever you decide.:)

BTW, Bernie's from a yorkie RESCUE, not a breeder, and we picked him up and brought him home on New Years eve.;)

I got my little Apple @ 11 weeks, and my little Buzz @ 4 months...It was, actually, easier w/Buzz, because he caught on more to potty training, and you're not quite so freaked out w/their small size...Apple was 2 lbs. @ 11 weeks, and Buzz was about 4 lbs. at 4 months...My little boy, Buzz, is still very much a puppy, but just a little further along w/his potty training, his intelligence and stamina...I think 5 months old will be just fine...They'll need to feed the pup for another 7 months, as a puppy, before she is considered an adult @ 12 months....What a nice present :)

My PUPPY Lucy is 5 1/2 months right now and this is my favorite stage that she has been in. She is still SUCH a puppy.... so playfull and cute, but now she is more fun, a little les work and worry, and way more cuddly. The longer they are with their mama the better. When they are taken to early it can cause problems later in life.....

5 months is a great time to get a pup. Plus, she will already have some training behind her which means you are not starting from scratch and I am sure you have heard that these little guys are a PAIN to potty train.

Oh- and someone else said this too: they are soooo cute at this age because they look really scrappy and scruffy because their adult hair is starting to grow in. PRESH!

Yorkies always seem like puppies to me. They just have that cute little teddybear look. They never seem to completely grow up. But 5 months old is definitely still a puppy. It's an awesome age.

I call Gypsy my forever puppy. At 3 yrs old she is 5 lbs. To me that is puppy size.

I got Sushi at 5.5 months and I purposefully wanted an older pup....he came pee pad trained, socialized, and still a very energetic puppy full of vigor and mischief. They learn so much from their mothers and littermates during those first few months...if only all pups were sold older, there would probably be less abandoned ones...
