So I am driving down the street and I see this lady on the side of the street sitting in a chair reading a book. Then I see a sign saying "YORKIES" and I notice a dog bed with a blanket and a little yorkie puppy sticking his head out looking sad. As the picture unfolds I begin to wonder with my two friends, "this lady cant be selling yorkie puppies on the side of busy road. So I roll down the window and I asked her. "Are you selling Yorkies." Idiot lady says Yes and gets excited. If looks could kill, she would be dead because I gave her the "your an idiot, I want to kick you in the face look." They are not accessories, they are one of God's divine creatures to be treated as family members not quick money as you sell them on the side of the street like a vendor. I was INFURIATED, no infuriated wasn't the word. Is the economy that bad you have to stoop that low. CMON. Okay getting down off the soap box now, just thought I would share.

Actually the econemy is that bad, at least in my neck of the woods.

The BYB or Puppy Mill situation has doubled as more and more Amish/English here loose their factory jobs and they discover theirs a good deal of money to be made. If I let myself think about it I'd be in tears most of the day.

oh I agree the economy is THAT BAD, I use to critize the woman that lives down the road for selling puppies out of her garage, but now I feel so sorry for her, her hubby lost his job at 53, is been six months he told my hubby, his unemployment is barely making the house payments and she works at my local mcDonald's making min wage, for bills, he's been looking for jobs and he can't find anything in his field, he told my hubby he would even clean bathrooms if necessary:(:(:( but so far nothing and his is running out of unemployment. they did not have one xmas light in their house this year, she always puts one tree outside since I moved here.. things are that bad, so she is trying to sell the dogs to get some xtra money for xmas for the grands.. I saw flyers in all the mini malls around here advertising her xmas puppies, they are barely 6 weeks old very cute yorkiepoos, that hurts my heart, but I know she is doing it out of necesity.. I felt so bad critizing her last time.. so lesson learned, sometimes you have to do what you have to do to eat..:(

yes, the economy is bad...

but saying "sometimes it is ok to be unethical, if cirmcumstances get bad" is sort of like saying "its ok to rob a bank, as long as you need the money"

selling 6 week old "designer dogs" who have likely had little or no vet care, certainly no medical testing, and should in no way be leaving their mother is just irresponsible....and, while we are at it: how about the poor unsuspecting person who doens't know how bad it is, who buys one of these puppies and ends up with thousands of dollars in vet care? Can they afford it?

Nope, situational ethics don't work for me...if its wrong. IT'S WRONG. and just because times are tough, the morality of it doesn't change.

You want something for the grandbabies? Craigslist is full of pt/temp jobs or odd jobs people want done. Or maybe you could MAKE something for them, really show them the meaning of christmas is not an XBOX.

I respect your opinion, but I still feel bad for the couple.. is christmas for god sake, I am making a doll to give to her grandaughter, and I am NOT going to judge what they do to put food on the table..

I don't think anyone here thinks its 'right' or 'ethical' but then again I'm not living on peanut butter or oatmeal like I did for that one year times were bad for me. i can't judge them for trying to keep the lights on or the heat.

There's a whole lot of wrong going on these days. Bad decisions are made. Life gets less black and white and more shades of gray. If your life is black and white you really can't realistically judge those living in the gray........

Amen to that, I felt so bad for trying to give her my speech about selling 6 week old puppies, I wish I could help them with more but it is bad everywhere, I own a doll store and this weekend was supposed to be a BIG weekend for me, well I did NOT sell one doll, the snow kept people home or shopping locally and I guess with not extra money for an extra custom doll or such.. so in my house is not going to be extra stuff just the necessary and thank god bills are paid and dogs fed..
the rest is extra..

I agree, one never knows how it truly is unless you are that person. The economy has made it really tough for many. It is better not to judge.

you know, I have walked that walk.

I had three children, two in diapers. My husband was hit by a car and injured his back. He was a roofer. his company couldn't insure him with the fractured back, so he was fired. He ended up delivering pizza with three kids to feed because that's all he could do.

I cut hair when I could, did some freelance stuff when he could be home with the kids.

I didn't resort to anything unethical. I went to the bread store...found a mission that had "day old" foods donated, was it embarrasing? Sure, but I did not let my circumstances undermine my ethics.

wrong, is wrong. and if we were on any other thread and someone said "I am about to go pick up my 6 week old designer puppy" no one would be saying "well, its ok, cause they are broke, go ahead and risk it". We would be outraged.

life is shades of gray. believe me, I have lived in most of them, but if you give up your principles every time it gets tough? you didn't have many to begin with.

We all judge people with OUR set of principles. Only WE thing OURS is right. Other people think we're nuts to dress our little furbabies up in their little pink faux fur lined jackets and spend $10.00 on a bow for their hair that matches their jacket and possibly booties. We think that's sane. Others think we should be committed.

I was watching Meet the Natives last night. It was fascinating. The way people raised one way think vs the way another set think.

The things they found shocking about us vs the things we found shocking about them. in regards to dogs: they stayed at homes where the dogs were pets. Their trip to the Petco was a riot!. When they finally went to California one of their hosts asked if they ate dogs and they debated wheather to tell the truth. If the dog wasn't friendly or damaged anothers property they ate it. to them a dog was meant for helping to hunt, protect the village or to eat I guess. That's how they were raised to think. Of course the hosts were appalled. I would have been and then hugged mine to me a little tighter. I was raised to think they're beloved members of the family.

If I went to India they would be appalled to learn I like my steaks. I'm freaked they treat theirs like honored guests....... cause it's a cow.....

Some people are raised to see a dog as a commodity. Perhaps seeing those many families with their companion animals may have had an affect on those tribesmen and they'll be a little nicer to their dogs when they go back... Maybe the next dog won't end up as stew.... maybe next time I go out to eat I'll have the salad and not the steak... maybe...

I really did question a lot of the things we do without knowing why after watching some of these shows.

Years ago, I talked with an elderly man who said he had to resort to stealing food to feed his family. Stealing is bad and breaks 8th Commandment, but at the same time, would it have been right for his family to starve? He said he wasn't proud of himself and cried.

I talked with another man who survived Buchenwald Concentration Camp. The residents were subjected to such cruelty of human experimentation, would be killed to have a tattoo turned into a lamp shade, and of course, starvation. He said that he and others had a choice, starve, or eat another human being. He said he still remembers what human flesh tastes like. Was this bad? Of course, but his instinct to survive took him down that path.

These are two extreme cases, but I am not the one to judge another human being's desire to live. That I will leave to God. I told myself I would never do something wrong to ease a bad situation. It's easy to say until you're in that situation.

My husband and I are disabled because of an accident. He can no longer work and I hope to next year. The job I had was eliminated. We have family that would take us in if times got too bad, but if you didn't have support, if there wasn't an alternative to fall back on, what would you do to feed your family?

I would hope I would never steal, have to eat another person, or sell puppies by the side of the road. But when we see another person doing this, why not help point that person to where there is help and rescue not just the puppies, but also the person who needs saving.

You are right there other avenues available. It's fine to be altruistic and I agree I would have been appalled, but it's not up to me to judge who is the worse type sinner on earth; judging someone when we may not know of all the circumstances involved or the level of education the women had or is it the person with no compassion. Just food for thought.

I cannot believe all of you who posted "yes it is that bad" and make it seem like this is ok. SELLING PUPPIES ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IS NOT OK. I don't care if you can't put food on the table. A dogs life is not something that we can throw away to make a quick buck.
Chances are, that puppy who gets bought for 100$ on the side of the road is going to end up in a shelter or not properly taken care of.
And ontop of it all it is ILLEGAL to sell puppies like that because it is ANIMAL CRUELTY!

I am well aware that times are tough, but cutting hair and doing freelance work is not breeding a dog to sell her puppies to the first person who walks by with some cash.

I have a 5 week old puppy living with me right now that I bought from one of these people selling roadside puppies. It made me so sick and so upset that I bought her last puppy and brought it home to find it a real home.... not someone who is going to put a bow on it and put it under the xmas tree for their kids until they get bored of it and the poor thing ends up in a shelter. WRONG IS WRONG. PERIOD.

That's not fair to say people who aren't jumping on your bandwagon hate dogs. I love dogs, but I also love people and care about their well being. If someone is selling puppies on the side of the road, yes it's bad. Instead of buying the puppy and feeding into the person's business, you should have asked the person why he/she is doing it and if that person realizes it's illegal. Offer to point the person in the right direction such as the local humane society. If the person is down on his/her luck, tell them where the local soup kitchen or food pantry is located. It's easier to criticize versus understanding.

Well to me the bottom line is that people can think and make decisions for themselves. A dog is completely helpless in our hands. A human being knows the difference between right and wrong and disregarding the life of an innocent animal is wrong- there is absolutely no excuse.

To me, it's no different than selling children on the side of the road. These are living, breathing beings.

Playing Devils Advocate therein lies a quandary.....

If you had to make the choice give your child up to foster care cause you couldn't keep the heat on and the State was getting ready to take them or sell a puppy on the side of the road which would you do? Those are your only 2 choices. Neither is not an option. Pulling another scenario out of the air is not an option. Which would you choose? Child or puppy?

That's not devils advocate, and there are ALWAYS other solutions. You didn't say "give up your child or murder a family member with money. Or starve your child or rob a bank.

You always have a choice, to do what is right, to do what is hard, or to do what is easy....this woman did not just start selling dogs when things got tough (or where did she have the money to buy 2 breeding dogs AND according to the OP of this, she has sold dogs before).

Its no different from me saying "well, I am hungry, times are hard, I will embezzle money from my company, because they have lots". Its wrong, there are always solutions: public assistance, charity organizations, food pantry's. She got a job at McDonalds....why doesn't he? How about instead of buying a lot of presents for the grand kids, they make coupon books saying "board game night at grandma's" and "sledding afternoon" or "movie night" with DVD's from the library?

All they are doing, is perpetuating the idea that christmas is about STUFF, and that its ok to do anything, to get it.

It is not illegal everywhere.
Actually, it is a common sight here to see people in the parking lot of a store GIVING away puppies out of the back of their vehicle. Road side fleamarkets and parking lots are pretty common places to see puppies of all breeds for sale or FREE. We have NO shelter or pound here. Killing unwanted litters or setting them out somewhere is also not an uncommon thing. ugh!

I don't think that selling puppies in this manner is right at all. However, I may have viewed it differently earlier in life. I grew up in a family where animals were animals, living beasts, thats all. My family had dogs (all outside breeds) and we loved them and took care of them. However, my dad never paid a penny for any of them, and I had bought a sweater and tried to wrestle it on our red bone hound, :p Oh my!

My point is, not all people are blessed with viewing thier Yorkie the same way we do. Although I see the fault in selling puppies on the side of the road or in a parking lot, I also know I do not view my girls the same way others do. These are not just "dogs" to me. But come on, we've all gotten the weird looks and comments when we tell a story about our 'baby' or something we do for them, or better yet how much thier food costs! :rolleyes:

Whoa! Im sorry I LOVE MY DOGS TO DEATH but if I had to sell my furbabies(no matter where i sold them) to feed my skinkids,then by all means call me what you want. I cant say Id choose animals over my family but it doesnt mean Im not a doglover. I WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY so what? Shoot me.

Reading all of the post I guess I shouldn't complain about the young women I saw selling two of her Yorkie puppies at The Domain (a high end shi shi outdoor shopping center) here in Austin this past weekend (okay I'm being sarcastic here) Yes I will complain because it's WRONG!!!

It was very crowded and she had them sitting in a cute pink stroller for people to notice as they walk by. I walked up and asked her about them because it was just strange. She was too obvious. She looked out of place. She said she has many more at home and she breeds them for a living. I said "oh really" and told her that I know all about Yorkies. She asked me if I wanted to buy one and I told her no and that I found a good reputable breeder and beautiful baby all ready. I asked her were they purebred because they look so different, being supposedly from the same litter, and told her that. They looked pitiful and ugly :( Sorry but they did, One was very fat and the other was very skinny with ears that were skinny and pointed east/west and very long. She then looked at me like please leave because she began to act nervous. I looked at her shook my head, looked at all of the stupid people making a fuss over them, then walked away.
