I am sure poodles are easier than yorkies... yorkies are so darn stubborn! poodles are SOOOOO cute! |
Our toy poodle, Prissy, was much easier to house break than Jasmine, our little yorkie. However, I think they both are extremely smart and I love them so very much. Prissy is more laid back than Jasmine and I think she some times thinks she is Jasmine's Mama, which is good. When ever Jasmine does some thing that she shouldn't do Prissy will intrevene. It is quite amusing to watch. They get along very well and Jasmine, just like a kid, knows just how far she can push Prissy. |
I have a yorkipoo named Max. When I adopted him, he already knew a few tricks. I've since then taught him a few more which he picked up in a matter of minutes. He has alot of personality and is so expressive which I think he gets from the yorkie breed; he is so smart that I think there is a little human trapped in his body! He amazes me sometimes. Here is an example, I never taught him to scratch at the door to let me know he has to go potty. After having him for about 3 months, one day out of the blue he scratched at the door and he's been doing it ever since. I guess he trained me! LOL |
I know I'm just repeating confirmation of what previous posters have said, but I have to take the opportunity to brag! I had a toy poodle for nine years, from the time he was a puppy until the day we had to have him put down due to congestive heart failure. I didn't realize just how brilliant that dog was until we got our Yorkie, Chloe, after losing him. Zach, the poodle, understood SOOOOOO many words, and I never really worked hard at teaching him. He just picked up on things. It didn't matter what tone of voice you said a word in, he still knew what you meant and responded accordingly. He had numerous different "barks" to tell us different things (outside, water, food..whatever) he wanted us to do, he could make us understand easily. And potty training? OH MY GOSH!!! I did not appreciate that dog enough. Teaching him to ask to go outside was the simplest thing I've ever done. I don't even know if you could call it "teaching"...he just did it. And even towards the end of his life when he was having terrible diarrhea, he would panic and try to make it to a tile floor so he didn't mess on my carpet. It broke my heart to see how hard he still tried to be good even though he was very sick. If it hadn't been for not wanting to be constantly comparing my new dog to Zach, I would probably have gotten another poodle instead of a Yorkie. They are just unbelievably smart. If they just didn't look like such sissy dogs....you just can't avoid that even when you don't do the "standard" haircut! :D -C |

My toy poodle was compelety pottied trained, going to the door on her own by the time she was 3.5 months old. I didnt get her untill she was 10 weeks. Tucker wasnt competley trained untill he was 7 months old and still sometimes wont go to the door on his own (he paces when he has to to go). She is very smart!! :)... your friend choose a great breed. |

There were two poodles in my obidience class. Owned by the same elderly woman. Both were eager to learn and beautiful dogs. I bought Troy as a "good report card" gift for my daughter . She is 7. He'sore of my dog though. Our cocker spaniels died last year and my daughter wasn't dead set against any form of pet. Then we both came across a yorkie and fell in love. We did research and waited well over a year until we were ready for a new pet. |
Poodles are supposed to be one of the smartest and easiest dogs to train. I have had two poodles in the past (different times) and they both have been super smart. Sometimes so smart, almost scary! But I was talking to a dog trainer at some point and he was saying that as smart as they are, they also figure out very easily how to work their owners, and surprisingly he said he has also seen a lot of poodles with behavioral issues in his career, which has been the direct result of these smart cookies figuring out how to manipulate their novice owners. :) |
