Standard or Tiny?
 

Just out of interest who owns standard yorkies 7-8lbs and who has the tiny ones? I thought I wanted a miniature but was then worried that the German shepherds would tread on it so I got a standard size, even though he is tiny at the moment, still being a puppy.

7-8 pds is still very tiny and I would still be very careful around even a gentle german shepard, even just playing around he could step on your puppy so please be very careful. Congrats on your new addition.

I prefer OVER-standard ;) My boy is 12.5lbs and I love every ounce of him.
I don't think I'd want one smaller than 10lbs. Too fragile for my lifestyle.

Thank you, yes we watch the dogs like hawks. They are all fast asleep at the mo. They are never left in the room on their own unless they are in their own crates.
I just love Alfie sooooo much and I love this site and how everyone is so enthusiastic about their yorkies.

My little girl is tiny. She is 3 pounds @ almost 8 months.
I was told she would be about 5. My Vet said that she is just about full grown and will be no more than 4 pounds.

I wouldnt trade her for anything thing in the world.... BUT
I get very nervous when she is around bigger dogs. especially bigger puppies that want to play. Her best friend right now is a bull dog but I need to keep constant watch to make sure the bull dog doesn't play too hard. I feel so bad that I cant just let them play.

That being said, smaller dogs are without a doubt harder to take care of. they are so delicate. I refuse to put anything around her neck in fear of a commonly collapsed trachea. There are times that I wish she was bigger and less fragile but she is my tiny little girl and I wouldn't change a thing.

I wanted a tiny but after watching many on here break their legs easily and require surgery I am glad mine are bigger. Mine are 6 and 11 lbs

I guess Nolee is above standard...10lbs! I thought I wanted a tiny yorkie, but I am very much pleased with my Nolee bug!!

Most of my yorkies are in the 6 to 8 lb range. Over the years I have had larger yorkies and I have had a couple of tiny ones. I definitely prefer the larger yorkies. The tiny ones are just so much more fragile.

My Sophie is tiny, 2 lbs. 6 oz. at 9 mos. She is definitely more worry/work than larger dogs I have had. Even though she's healthy and very active, she is also incredibly delicate. I use a harness with her instead of a collar to protect her trachea. If I have a house guest or if Sophie and I visit where people aren't used to having a tiny little thing underfoot, I clip a bell to her so that you can hear where she is. (She likes to trot along behind you and if you don't notice her, it would be easy to tread on her.) My vet has advised me to seek immediate medical attention if Sophie has a bout of extended diarrhea or illness because she could become dehydrated and/or hypoglycemic so quickly. Sophie is scheduled to be spayed at the end of January; I waited until she was older due to concerns about anesthesia when she was even tinier.

Truth is... Sophie was a surprise gift, and although I adore her, I never would have chosen her because: 1) She came from a backyard breeder and I have always adopted dogs; and 2) I would have preferred a bigger, sturdier Yorkie. I know everyone has his/her own opinion about dog size, but I do get really disgusted with breeders/buyers who are so focused on "teacup" or "micro-teacup" (what is that??!) size that they don't consider the ethics in breeding dogs to be small at the cost of health. And I know I'll probably catch some heat for this, but I think dogs should be healthy, active members of our families, not toys or dolls.

Is it just me, or are the larger ones more cuddling and loving? My Rily is around 8 pounds and my son's yorkie, Manny, is much bigger. Manny is a big soft, cuddly teddy bear! I love him so much! :D

gatsby is 5 1/2 pounds and i think that is tiny but i think the standard is 4-7 pounds for my next yorkie i want one thats bigger maybe 10 or12 i also want a full tail

Tiffany is just over 5 lbs and her brother Casey (littermate) is 11+ lbs He lives next door at the neighbour with Maggie A MUCH bigger and older dog. Casey is gorgeous and well preportioned and such great dog and he holds his own with his new family and they play all the time. Where with Tiffany We always have to be carefull when we visit because they play a bit rough. But we love our furkids with all our heart. Our Nickey is 6lbs and a good size. I would not choose one under 5 lbs myself! Just too many problems! That said I think they choose us!

There are now 2 Yorkies in our house. Not counting my baby for life Cookie who's weight ranges from 3.5 lbs to 4 lbs at this highest. He's over 5 yrs old.

Monica-5lbs in my opinion they are pretty darn small and I must admit that cuddling Monica is so comfy.

now Woody is 6 months old and weighs 4 lbs or so. i really hope he grows more just becuase other people are not very careful aroung tiny dogs. He has a bell, which my boyfriend calls him a cat for, but he's strong and healthy. one lady told me she thinks he will grow for another 6 months. when do they stop growing?

Jasmine is 3 1/2 pounds. Her parents are 5 pounds. We don't let our little grandchildren hold her and she is not allowed to be placed on the furniture for fear of her jumping off. She is always with me. She is one year old and very healthy but I tend to worry about her more than our toy poodle who is seven pounds.

Missy is 3 3/4 lbs and Dora (her sister from a different litter) is charted to reach 4.5 lbs. I like their small size. It did take some adjusting to get use to (I have 3 kids ages 4-7) but we all learned how to do the "Yorkieshuffle" and are really careful with them. We have certain "rules" the kids have to follow. The first few months of owning our first Yorkie Missy were stressful. It was an adjustment phase as far as everyone learning how to handles a tiny Yorkie, but now it's second nature to all of us. I love their small size. I'm sure I would love them just as much if they were bigger, but I wouldn't trade my little furbabies for anything in the world.

I just wanted to point out, b/c I didn't see if anyone else said anything, but the standard size for yorkies are 7 lbs and under. There is not an official category for "teacup" or "miniature". However, my personal opinion is any yorkie under 4 lbs I like to call a "tiny".

Uni is 5.5 lbs and I think she is soooo small. I couldn't imagine having a smaller one. Most of the yorkies in my local meet up group are in the 3-4 lbs range. They disappear when they lay down in the grass! Also, 50% of people who see Uni think she is tiny, the other 50% think she is huge. so I guess she is juuuuuust right :D

My next one I want a little bigger, my bf wants a smaller one! We are backwards. :rolleyes:

I have 4 Yorkies. All of them range in size from 2.5lbs to 4.5lbs. I don't think they're fragile or sickly at all. They jump on and off the back side of my sofa. They jump on and off our beds since they first learned how. I think they're more sturdy and solid than the Chi's I used to breed. They have never had any LP problems or any health problems. They go everywhere! I treat them as I treat my 30lb Pug! We go for 3 mile walks daily as well. We go camping and fishing too. I've never treated them as fragile little dogs either. They watch my every move and keep out of our way. They are super intelligent! I'm proud to have them! I have seen 7-10lb Yorkies and IMO they are huge! I have always had small dogs and I didn't want another the size of my Pug! My good friend had a 10lb Yorkie that was the same exact height of my Pug he was mamouth! My hubby said absolutly not if you get another dog it will be the size of our Chi's! BTW on the akc.org it states not to exceed 7lbs nowhere does it say 3-7 lbs or even 4-7lbs. I've looked and looked.

Manolo is 6 1/2 lbs. She grew 1/2lb the past couple of months. But I think she's stopped growing now. She's 1 year and 5 months.

Kona's about 4 pounds at 9 months. We're trying to fatten him up but he refuses to gain the weight. I have nothing to compare him with but he's loads of fun as he is.

We wanted a smaller little guy like him because we're used to travelling quite often so we wanted to make sure he'd be travel friendly if we needed to be go of town or even relocate.

We appreciate his portableness and also we what we presume to be his smaller amounts of poo.

Our 10 month old weighs 12+ and looks and feels like a bear cub! She is truly a perfect size! I feel like a little girl again with my stuffed teddy bear!:dogsm5:

Our Tessie is a tiny little girl at 2.8 lbs. I definitely never thought that we would have such a tiny dog. I had been wanting a small breed- such as a yorkie or bischon, but was thinking more around the 7-10 lb range. However, in March of this year, we were blessed with the opportunity to adopt Tessie. Due to heartbreaking health issues, her parents were needing to find a new home for their tiny girl that would be without other dogs or small children- which a long story- short, is how we we ended up with our little blessing :angel:

I was so nervous bringing her home because my husband is a normal big guy :) and I was afraid that he would not understand how delicate she is. It is so cute how he "babies" her. It is truly amazing how smart (& cautious) she is- which I'm sure has kept her injury free in her 3+ years.

Of course, she has no idea that she is "tiny." One of my favorite quotes that describes her is from my 9 yr. old nephew who said that I needed to get her a shirt that says, "I may be small- but I'm mighty!" Definitely describes our little bundle of joy!

I get to witness both worlds. My two Yorkies are 9lb and 13lb and my daughter has two small ones ( Not sure what they weigh now but they are not even half the size of mine, and our vet refused to neuter her little boy because of his size). They visit often and I get to see the difference clearly in the care they need. They are always cold even when it is not all that cold. Although we bought one of mine and her two from the same breeder mine was bought a couple of years before my daughters. We never expected them to stay that small and were definately what we were looking for. They are so fragile and I am even afraid when my two play with them. I do believe the only way to stop breeders from producing these little ones is if we could stop the demand for them. Well, I guess I am allowed to dream on..............................:confused:

Snoopy is 5 lbs, and pretty sturdy--a very good size I think. We didn't pick him for size though. We were at the breeder's with my son and daughter in law when they picked out Snoopy's littermate, and absolutely fell in love with Snoopy. It wouldn't have mattered if he were 2 pounds or 20! :wub:

I have a "tiny" (toy poodle) at 4/5 pounds and a "over the standard" yorkie mix that is 9/10 pounds, but he to me is still small. He is the same height as my toy poodle ( 7 inches) but very sturdy. We do treat Lexee like she is fraile and breakable, but with Tucker we play rougher with, dont worry so much if he running around and jumping from one couch to another..:rolleyes: (which is not allowed in my house, but just like kids they do it anyways :cool:). If I was to buy another small breed of dog I would try and find one more similar to Tucker, small but sturdy. :)

Lilee is about 6 months old and weighs in at 3.4 lbs. Although she's tiny, she is also very sturdy in structure. She is such a love, and I wouldn't care what weight she is :wub:

Lucy is 2.8 lbs and five months old. She is a very fragile little darling and always cold - but very beautiful.

We wanted a larger Yorkie because we have a Westie and he is not gentle! He is very sturdy and big boned compared to Lucy - with big Westie jaws!

There is a total difference in how I care for these two. Of course, Lucy is still a puppy and Ringo is 3 - so that makes a difference right there, I guess. Ringo loves to be outside in our fenced yard - unless it gets down to zero. Lucy hates it if it gets down below 40. Ringo loves to go for loong walks - not Lucy!

I hope Lucy gets in the 5-6 lb range so I don't have to worry so much AND she can keep up with Ringo. Even when Ringo is just playing with her - when he starts jumping around getting rough - I worry that he will accidentally hurt her. But she usually goes back for more so she seems to be holding her own.

I definitely would not want any dog smaller than Lucy. There was another puppy at this breeder's that had such a beautiful face - but she was only going to be 3 lbs full grown! Too small for our household.

The 'standard' for Yorkies is 'not to exceed 7 lbs', not 7-8 lbs. (I think sometimes there is a confusion between "standard" and "average".
Also, there is no such thing as a miniature Yorkie...no micros or teacups either. :p

To answer your question, mine range from around 8 lbs, all the way down to 2.5 lbs. To me, the ideal size would be around 5 or 6 lbs. Still within the breed standard, but no so small that so many extra precautions have to be taken, as I have to do with my smallest one.
