I then check fit it to him and attach velcro allowing it to be able to be a little tighter or looser. I then purchase the carefree pantiliners and put in the center of the belly band. BEFORE i put it on Joey, we go potty and I make sure he pee pees. Then we put the band on. It is designed to aid in the marking the little boys just love to do. Not as a way to actually releve himself. If we are traveling he will have his band on, but just as we get ready to enter the home we are visiting, the band comes off and He goes potty. Then put the band back on. I have to do this at night when I allow him to go to bed with us. I clean up his markings and he wants to put them back. I hope this helps you, I check his band as we leave the house we visit and change out the pantyliner if needed (and it is) also I keep the moist wipes and use these to keep him clean. Also 1st thing in the am I remove the band and then take him potty. I don't leave it on him while we are at home unless I have cleaned the house and might be expecting guest. Or I have gone shopping, then he gets banded before I start to bring in the purchases unless I want to find wee wee on them. Little Stinkers. Joey is learning what the banding means. And he thinks he is special when he wears his

Thanks you didn't have to tell me how to make them that was so nice:D ill try to make them on my own if i cant find one i like for sale

If you are using a good absorbent pad he shouldn't be that wet in just a few hours.

I use Stayfree Deodorant Maxi pads for their belly bands. It absorbs a lot plus it is scented so it helps keep them smelling fresh.

Several YT members recommended I use the Walmart brand of the Poise ultimate size pad, and they work great! I have left one of Jordy for several hours and it held every drop so that band wasn't even soiled.

I use the Walmart brand of the Poise too and they work great!! But I cut them in half. A bag will last a long time:)

Don't use the menstrual pads...they don't work!

Mislissa,
You need to get incontinence pads. Any size will work. I use the Tena (they're cheaper) and cut them in half, width-wise so each pad gives you two pee pee pads. Get plenty of belly bands so you can change often if they get wet on the edge. Be sure to wash off your puppy's urine area so they don't get stinky or irritated....most of the time just clear water will do. Pat him dry and place the clean band and pad on and you're set for another few hours.

Thanks for this detailed and extremely helpful thread! I have just ordered 2 belly bands from YorkieHaven Rescue. Because of your comments I can go out and buy the correct pads to have ready when the bands arrive.

Meanwhile, I have a few questions for posters here. Oliver will be 15 next month and shows occasional signs of confusion. He's developed a marking problem but our vet advised against belly bands, saying that he's seen too many resulting urinary tract infections. However, no one here has mentioned that problem: so am i correct in assuming it can be avoided with the kind of meticulous care described in this thread? Has anyone had problems w/ belly bands and UT infections?

I'd also be grateful to hear from anyone who began using the BBs when their Yorkies were advanced seniors like Oliver. How did your dog adapt? Any chance that the BB can revive old potty training habits?

Thanks, all !

How many pads do you put on the belly band? I put the Kotex panty liners. I put 3 of those liners....yes 3 that will last almost an entire day . What I do is buy like 20-40 Kotex coupons in ebay , they cost like $1 or $2
and they are $1 off any Kotex pantyliners. Walmart sells them for $1.00
So I buy 40 packs of Kotex Liners for for like $3 and that is tax only that I'm paying. This will last me a few months. I cut out the BOX TOPS and when I get abotu 70 boxtops, I sell those in ebay and get my money back that I paid for the coupons plus the tax I paid. So I end up paying $0

Sounds confusing but I learned this and thats the only way I get the pads now.

I cut them in half, or even in thirds, too! :)

I've been wondering this same thing. Alexander will be 14 in February and he's having a harder time getting around, especially in this colder weather. I've been thinking about trying belly bands on him but worry about how he'll adjust.

I put 1/2 or 1/3 of an incontinence pad in the band. I've never used panty liners but I would worry that they wouldn't keep the skin dry enough because they're too thin to really suck up the moisture.

I don't mean to highjack this thread, but I've been thinking..are belly bands only for boys, or can they be used for girls as well?..maybe a different pattern?

They make diapers for the girls. You put a pad in them just like you would a belly band.

Would this be good to train, or just to avoid accidents? Sophie Mei is being pretty good with the pad and the back yard, but she wakes up around 5 and pees on a corner....of my bed!!!!!!...same spot, I try to wake up before she does and put her down to pee, but today I dared to "oversleep", woke up at 5.30, and she had peed, so Im washing my sheets, and mattress cover again.

I have never used the diapers myself, so I hope someone else can help you.

Have you thought of putting pet stairs or a ramp next to your bed so that Sophie Mei can get up and down on her own? I would be so afraid she might try to jump off and hurt herself one of these days.

joeys mom 12-14-2009 07:43 AM

When I first read this post, the only experience I had had with the male inside dog was my Joey. He will go to his pad or outside to pee pee, but would have to MARK everything he passed, this is just a few dribbles. But what a mess. Thanks for all the information I might need in the future. I hadn't even thought about when Joey gets to his senior years. You guys are the greatest!!! And very very crafty!!!

Sophie Mei is a hand full! Im sure she'll be able to use them, and she'll be on my bed all day. I know she can hold it for 3-4 hrs., I guess she likes that little spot.I would love to hear form someone that has used them, and if there's a member that sells them also.
