Does your Yorkie & your cat get along/play/snuggle?? I REALLY want to get a little brother for Snick but my husband and I plan to have a baby perhaps next year and we think 2 dogs and a newborn maybe too much. Then I thought of perhaps getting a kitten. I have not heard much about kitties and Yorkies getting along, but can you share with me your experience if you own a cat and a yorkie please?? Do they play together? Fight? Snuggle or sleep together? Does the dog or cat try to eat each other's food? Anything scary ever happen? Thanks a bundle-- Snick & Viv |
I have 2 yorkies, an adult cat and a nine week old kitten. The yorkies and the adult cat dont play together but they dont fight either. The kitten is very playful and trys to play with Jewels my smaller yorkie. Jewels will chase her back a little bit sometimes. They dont snuggle together but Ive seen pictures of other peoples on here that do. My yorkies were 4 yrs old when we got the first cat so they were set in their ways already. The food is tough cats cant eat dog food because they need taurine thats in cat food. The dogs cant eat cat food because it has too many calories. I put the cat food up on a step stool so the cats can get it but the dogs cant. I like having both and right now it is so fun having a baby kitty in the house |
Oh wow Chachi, you are such an animal lover, how sweet!!!! What type of cats do you have? Do they all seem to mind their own business? I think I would have more peace of mind if Sick had some sort of buddy at home when he is alone. I also do like cats, so I'm considering it. The local shelters are FULL of cats and kittens that need homes. Thanks! Snick & Viv |

Our 7 y/o cat has slowly warmed up to our 2 y/o yorkie. They'll play and cuddle, but it took a long time to get to this point. I think if they were babies together it would have been different. |
We have two adult cats, who we have had since they were wee kitties. Berby is 6, Gabriel is 3. Both have birthdays in April. In the initial days of Galahad being home (he was rescued), Berby sought him out to spook him, and Gabriel just avoided him. He let him share our bed though. Galahad tried to sniff them, but no more than that. Now, both cats try to avoid him, although Gabriel will still share our bed with Galahad. He active seeks them out to try to play with them, bouncing and yipping and pawing at them, while both of them attempt to smack him upside the head, hiss, and run away. |
4 Attachment(s) We have a cat he's 23 years old, his name is Champai. He doesn't care much for yorkies, but will play once in a while. Chloe (she's 4.5months old) really wanted to play with him when we brought her home, she just kept harassing him :D . Since we brought home 2nd yorkie puppy Dylan, yorkie furbabies play together and leave the cat alone. |

I had bought a kitten about a month ago. At first she didn't like Missy, but Missy was persitant and eventually won her over, so they played. Although I felt the cat was a little bit too rough at times, and worried that as the cat grew it could become dangerous for Missy. Then I brought Dora home a few days ago, and 3 times the cat tried to kill Dora. I spoke to my vet and found out that it was "predatory behaviour" and completely instinctual for the cat to act this way. She was NOT trying to play, she was hunting. The vet said not to leave Dora alone with the cat for even a second, because the cat would kill her. I decided to rehome the cat to my bestfriend whom lives up the street. I didn't want to risk her killing Dora. |

Thank you all who have responded...the pics are precious!! A few nights ago Snick and I went out to get the mail and he chased after something in the dark and I saw it was the alley cat that is always in our court. The cat ran away and Snick just stood there like a lil baby as usual with the "What did I do Mommy?" look on his face! Lol...he just LOVES anything that moves!! I'm thinking this summer when I am off (I teach) would be perfect to get Snick a brother....I think my in laws and parents might kill me. They are waiting for a human baby. Hugs- Snick & Viv |
It was really scarey! Besides that one issue, the cat was great. She tolerated my 3 kids smothering her all day, she was snuggly, mellow and very well behaved. I guess that she just couldn't help it, it was her instincts. She is quite happy at her new home though. There are two other cats there, and kids to play with her. We just visited her yesterday. I'm just gonna stick to my Yorkies from now on :) |
I have two cats, Simba is 14. He's very mellow. He doesn't play, but he doesn't mind Tila, Mika, and Odie. D'art on the other hand is 2 and he's got more energy and is very playful. He get's along great with all three and plays all the time. He isn't rough at all. I was just thinking oh my gosh, my sister has a pom and her daughter has a cat. But they are such a pair, those two are like insane. You should see them run around playing. Bella likes to sit on the cat, the cat loves it! LOL! |
I have 3 cats and 3 dogs and for the most part, all is harmonious! My youngest cat was about a year old when i got my yorkie. They now play like they are the same species! It is so funny to watch. I have never had a problem with prey drive... |
1 Attachment(s) I'm over at my dad's house often and they have two dogs and I bring Jackson over. The kittens came first before I even got Jackson and Jackson will STILL chase them... as will their 2 dogs. They don't not get along but it's a constant battle dog vs. cat. I would never own a dog and a cat together personally, LOL. We used to have a cat with our German shepherd and Golden Retriever growing up and it was the same issue. Luckily, the cats have learned to stay upstairs and the dogs stay downstairs (gated off). It has gotten better too. I think they just learned to put up with each other but they certainly don't play together. The pic below is the closest they've ever been to each other, ha! Have you thought about maybe adopting a dog that's already past it's puppy stage, already potty trained, going thru a rescue? It may be less stressful than a pup if it's a good match! |
Good Luck on your decision!! |
My cat Avery is 12 years old and my Yorkie SophieKate is 1.5 years old. Avery and Sophie Kate get along great in fact when Sophie Kate got her shots this year she was in a lot of pain, the only comfort she found was snuggling on the bed with Avery for about 24 hours. Avery my cat is just a big old sweetheart and one of my first loves (I raised him when his Mom rejected him). Sophie Kate gets a little rough with him sometimes and he will haul off and smack her, keeps everything in balance (well if you can overlook drama queen Sophie Kate howling like a baby when there isn't a scratch on her). |
I love this entry! I'm planning to get a kitten next year... ;) |
My mind has been made up (thanks to my reliable YT friends) I will NOT be getting a cat. I have never been a cat person, but I think everyone is a KITTEN person:) Just like everyone LOVES puppies. I have always longed for a doggie since I was 8 yrs old and finally after I got married, my babe of a husband and I got Snick. Now I want more!! The other day I had 3 dogs in my house and it was amazing. To bad all our parents want human babies, not more furry babies:) In time I tell them, in time. I kinda think that having 2 dogs when we do finally have a baby will be better in the long run. They will have each other and they perhaps won't have issues (jealousy) with the baby then?? Just a thought. I'm kinda freaked out about litter boxes as well...kinda stinky!! Thanks everyone...it's been enlightning for sure!! Huggies- Snick & Viv |
1 Attachment(s) Motley is about 18 months old and we brought Rowdy(4 month old kitten) home about 2 weeks ago. I will say the first night was a long one. Motley is a barker and I think he barked about 6 hours straight. Now they get along just fine and play together all day long. I waited to bring Rowdy home until he was a little bigger because Motley likes to play rough(he's about 6.5 pounds) now they are about the same size so I don't worry about them hurting each other as much. |
Toby's arch enemy is Bo the stray cat we took in. He absolutley doesn't like him. The cat stays outside so it's not a problem. Maybe if you got a puppie and kitten at the same time that could grow up togther it would'nt be an issue.I don't recommend introducing a kitten or espically a grown cat an adult yorkie. |
I hope your not getting one now because of Lilmissys post about the preditory cat. She has a young pup and you should keep them separate from cats or adult dogs. Neither of my cats have ever acted preditorial around my yorkies and if they did they would lose that battle. The only time I have even seen that side of Mittens is when she is trying to catch a mouse |
No, I mainly decided not to get the kitty b/c of the numerous stories I've heard on here as well as from friends how their dogs and cats don't get along. I think it is a good choice for me. Even though I know Snick would love the kitty, I'm not sure if the kitty would ever love Snick. Can't take that chance. At least I have a pretty good assurance if I got another Yorkie or tpy breed dog, it would most likely end up that they are buddies even if in the beginning we have a transition period. Thanks again to everyone and keep it going if anyone else is thinking of getting a kitty. Holiday Huggies- Snick & Viv |

Another thing, as sweet and cuddly as this cat is, she's definitely a hunter. My friend has had alot of cats in her lifetime, and she said this kitty is "the toughest hunter out of all the cats she's had", and "she's stronger than her 2 X 20 lb male cats". She could tell this just by the way she plays. I really think that every cat and dog is different. I'm sure that Yorkies and cats can co-exist just fine, it just didn't work out well in my house. Judging by the pics on this thread though, it is definitely doable. :) |
Yorkie and Cat I have 1 19 month old Yorkie and a 7 year old cat and they are the best of buddies.... They play together all the time. I catch them sleeping together, laying in the sun together all the time. They have gotten along since day one. |
my aunt has a cat the same age and size as Pann and they are best friends lol. we go over there for play dates and they both love it! it's hilarious to watch, Pann's so careful not to use his teeth but still play rough at the same time, and that' all on his own with no guidance from me!:D |
Diva HATES our cat Cali. She tells on her all the time, trying to get her in trouble. LOL Cali is the same age as Diva, but they have never been buddies. Cali torments Diva for fun and Diva tries her best to tattle on everything the cat does. It's really funny some days. They don't fight, but they definitely are not and will not be 'cuddle buddies!' |
Theres actually a few things you can do to be able to see how your dog might react to a cat or kitten. Firstly there are some shelters that will allow you to bring your dog around a cat or kitten that you are interested in rescuing to see if they will get along or not. Others will allow you an overnight, to be able to bring the cat or kitten (or dog in other situations) back if anything is not right i.e. aggression towards other animals in the house, etc. I have 3 cats, all of which are adults. 9+ in age. 2 from the same litter a boy and a girl tabby that are my moms, and then the third is actually mine is a grey and pink calico. She does not get along with the female tabby, but they live somewhat peacefully in the same house and have for the past 3 or 4 years. Now about my little yorkie, well she is 7 years old I adopted her about 1 month ago now, and she had been around cats at her previous home but MY cats had NOT been around dogs (my calico was around dogs when I first adopted her for about a year but not since then and probably doesnt remember). None of the cats care, they just sort of pass her by. They don't hiss at her or get mad, they just don't want to play with her. And my yorkie doesn't seem to mind them or really care to play with them either. As far as litter boxes that's all on the owners part on how bad it smells. I don't have stinky boxes ever, but that's because we keep them clean and I'd hate to have someone walk into the house and smell cat junk. Honestly using the poo scoop to clean litter seems better than using bags to pick up fresh warm poo off the ground from my yorkie since litter is usually scented, but that's just me! Anyway, it's all dependant on what you like or don't. There are bad stories everywhere but it is only one SMALL fraction of the experiences of the world with people having cats and dogs in the same house. I don't think I know one person in real life that has both cats and dogs (and that's a lot! almost everyone I know has both) and had bad experiences. If the dogs and cats don't play together they just leave each other alone. It's all situational and also I do believe some of it has to do with how you actually introduce the animals, too. |

3 Attachment(s) Even though you have made up your mind... I thought I would still share my story with you :p I got two kittens from the shelter together when they were realllly young. The one fit in the palm of my hand. They were about 5-6 months old when I brought Couver home at 4 months. They have been best buds since. They chase eachother and play like they are of the same species. The one cat will lie on his back and lightly paw at Couver. I have never heard any of them get upset with eachother in any way. They are great with eachother. I think the cats have been great for Couver. He does not chase strange cats he sees because he sees them as friends. He has been socialized around animals of all shapes and sizes, and this has been great for him. We go over to my mother-in-laws (she has 5 cats and 2 large dogs) and he does great. The cats are no big deal to him, because he has two kitty brothers at home. The only complaint I have are the litter boxes. Because I do not believe in allowing cats to roam outside... I have to clean up the litter box a lot. Even though this is tedious, I would not change it for anything. The cats have been an awesome addition to our family, and we love them just as much as we love Couver :D Here are some pictures of the boys: 1. NOT posed. They do this all the time. 2. Literally the morning after we brought Couver home... The cats were lying on the bed, and Couver came up and snuggled between them... like he belonged there all along. 3. Playing under the cat tree. |
