New Las Vegas law is stupid! Breeders permit help Las Vegas just passed a law that all animals must be spayed or neutered by 4 months of age (with some exceptions ) Anyway I live in Las Vegas and I am a responsible pet owner! I have had my Bailey for 3 years now and she was spayed at around 9 ymonths because we knew that we were not ready to breed nor were we interested at the time And she was way too small anyway. Well fast forward three years and we have been doing our research and decided we want to breed we spent over a year find just the right breeding quality Yorkshire terrier. So how do we get a breeder permit? I looked it up and cant seem to find. Also, theres so many things wrong with this new law! What about the pups that are just too tiny at 4 months old to be spayed? Bailey wasnt even 1 lb and 4 months old! It just a stupid law and the fact that the punishment if you have puppies without a permit is that they confinscate the puppies is just ridiculous! WOW I can see the good and bad in this. The good is I hope it shuts down all puppy mills and BYB and it starts going state to state. Many who wont do it will get fined and their dogs took away and sent to a shelter. that to me is sad. But I can see it cutting down on so many homeless animals. there's so many being PTS daily its just so sad. for dogs that are to small to be spayed or neutered I hope they can get by with a vet note proving that they are just to small at that age to have it done. I hope they fit in with the (with some exceptions ) as for the fines •Fines for violation ◦$250 for a first offense ◦$500 for a second offense ◦$1000 for a third offense These fines are high but I think it will cut back on many BYB breeders. there are still so many rescues / shelters out there that let their dogs go with out being spayed or neutered and those dogs some not all just end up with pups and back to the shelters, I think by them having to spay or neuter before release is wonderful. sorry I'm no help on where and how to go about obtain a breeders permit. |
THIS IS AWFUL! Yorkies are very very sensitive to anesthesia and my vet has told me to wait as long as possible before my Lucy goes into her first heat...... not all puppies are ready to be spayed at 4 months! How can they regulate this! YUCK! |

The Silver State Kennel Club is working with the city council to address their concerns with the ordinance. Legislative Liaison Ken Sondej who can be reached at 4winds@viawest.net is coordinating speakers for the committee meeting. You can also contact the AKC Government Relations Department at doglaw@akc.org for additional information. Thank you your attention to this important issue. You could contact any of the three listed above about a breeding permit. There is good and bad in this proposal as with any legislation. There is a lot that is not being stated because it would leave it open for abuse. I don't think they should be breed specific on the spaying/neutering because it just leaves it too open for people to find loopholes but.... I'm sure if you get a vet's letter about waiting to do the operation due to reasonable excuses such as health and size that it would/should be acceptable - they just don't want to say that. The 4 month deadline is set for a "standard" period, which again is really being put there so that these dogs/cats are not going into their first heat, mating, and producing unwanted puppies/kittens. The fines shouldn't be affordable - they're set to deter people from doing something unwanted. If it was affordable - what would be the reason not to do something? I just wish that this would have hit the pet stores harder! I think there should be a central database for microchipping. Even if there's several companies they should all have to register into the same database - nationally. I also think the microchipping should be done by the breeders and information put on the birth certificate so that there is a paper trail. Good breeders wouldn't have a problem with that - only brokers or byb's would. This is a beginning but it does need a lot of tweaking. I live in Las Vegas, too, and this is just my opinion. |
A similar law has been attempted to be passed in California..... The law was implemented in Las Vegas without being thought out. More than anything it does take away your rights. There are other ways to promote responsible pet owner laws as well as responsible breeding. This law will not do what it is suppose to do, stamp out puppy mills and BYBers, they can afford all the fees as they breed in high volumes. What is going to do is force the reputable breeder out of business. I know tha Nevada doesn't have many shows.....but, Las Vegas was being seriously looked at for the YTCA Roving National next year.....because of this law, that probably is no longer an option.....as the law will affect dogs coming in from other areas of the country. |

As I recall a message came across the boards from YTCA members chat list that this law had passed. I'll try and go back through my deleted mail to see if I found it. YTCA Roving National has a committee appointed that is doing the assessment of sites. However, if this pet legislation has passed, it will put the committee on a different route. |

I just spoke to a lady on the phone at animal control and shes trying to tell me that the only way that I can obtain a breeders permit is if I show My dog at least once a year. Is this true? She said in order to obtain the breeders permit you have to obtain a fanciers permit first? Has anyone heard this? |
