Hi - I'm the one who's not a cartoonist...
 

My name is Bruce, and two months ago - along with my friend Jim George - we started posting one cartoon a day at DrawtheDog.com. I'm writing now to introduce myself and ask for your help.

Our daily cartoons are black and white, but every Saturday we post a full color cartoon that captures the essence of a breed. In a few weeks, we want to feature a Yorkie, but first we need your input.

Here are some examples of what Jim has done for other breeds. Notice - I hope - how the pose captures the spirit and personality of that breed:

Lab: Lab - a full color Draw the Dog cartoon inspired by hundreds of Lab stories
Golden: Golden - a full color Draw the Dog cartoon inspired by 194 Golden Retriever tales (approximately)
Dane: Dane - a full color Draw the Dog cartoon inspired by hundreds of Dane stories
GSD: GSD - a full color Draw the Dog cartoon inspired by countless German Shepherd stories

It would be great if you could share your suggestions and photos here. I'll be watching every post, and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. What we really need to know is: what makes Yorkies different than other dogs?

i think it should be in full coat and either sitting up or longing in a bed remember all yorkies are pampered by us and we dont own them they own us

I have five Yorkies, some short hair, some long, boys and girls. I have what I call school everyday with them. This is when I teach them tricks using cheerios. Yorkies love to learn and please their master. As you can see from these photos I have thier undivided attention! I love the drawings, especially the one about give the man back his wallet, keys, too funny!

I think that the Yorkie should be sitting with the head in the oh so familiar "Yorkie tilt" listening intently with those intelligent big brown eyes, to what we say because they really do understand us! :aimeeyork Donna :aimeeyork

Everytime I make Pot Roast in the slow cooker I have this vision of my five yorkies, one standing on top of another (stacked in their various sizes, large to small) in order to reach the kitchen cabinet and serve up the pot roast while mommy & daddy are at work.:D I can just picture them, "more carrots for me", "how about some gravy on that potatoe".......

You'll need more than one....we have big yorkies & little yorkies..some have pointy ears, some have floppy ears BUT, I agree, they all have dark expressive eyes.... & licorice drop noses.

Thanks for all the feedback. Here are some stoopid questions, but we want to get this perfect:

1.) Can you point me towards photos of the "famous Yorkie head tilt"?

2.) Also, can you tell me about the different types of Yorkies, and can everyone weigh in about which one(s) should be included? With Dobermans, which debuts on Saturday, we included two Dobermans, one with natural ears and one with cropped.

Dude, you guys are good. I think the examples you posted really do capture those breeds' spirit well.

But, wow, how do you capture a Yorkie's personality? Their "show" look is long, silky hair, expertly manicured with a bow in their hair. I've heard that the best show Yorkies strut in the ring, they are so proud. You'd might check American Kennel Club - Yorkshire Terrier for the breed standard on coloring, etc.

But most of us with pet quality Yorkies see a different side to them. These guys were bred to chase and kill rats, so Yorkies are ALL DOG. I think all of us at one time or another have described them as "a big dog trapped in a little dog's body."

They are smart, they are curious, and they always seem to be getting into something. They can dig, they can chew, and it's almost as though they knowingly do those things just to mess with you.

I think a pose that would strike a chord with many Yorkie owners would be to have the long-haired show Yorkie, but somehow show the precocious side. Like the hair being intentionally mussed up, maybe even drastically so. Maybe standing on or chewing the bow that it ripped from its own hair. Or another idea, shredding a first-place ribbon that it won in a show.

The head tilt idea fits into that theme because the look is a very piercing, perplexed look, like "Hmm, this behavior bothers you?"

Good luck, I'm dying to see what you guys come up with. I'll go searching for head tilt pictures and post here soon if no one else has.

Your site is fabulous, but man have you opened a Pandora's box asking Yorkie people to share about their pups! Mike has some great tips for you here. Take a peek at the Photo forum and even the Video forum to get an idea of the different looks.

Gracie Ruth learned early in life that the 'head-tilt' will get you out of nearly any type of trouble. It's one of her best weapons.

I am not sure you will be able to get all of the personalities into one yorkie.. and as you have noticed, most have more than one...


Maybe many different looking ones and personalities peeking through and around the name??

I am so excited to see the Yorkie, please come back and give us a link when it is complete.

Note their mouths and how even though their actual mouth is tiny the hair forms a long tight-lipped appearance...as if they're saying "I'm not saying a word."

I love the "innocent" look they give you when you catch doing something! Ah, the famous "head tilt" makes it almost believable that they weren't guilty!

Love your website! Take a look at the 'how spoiled is your Yorkie' thread to get some ideas of what these rascals are capable of.

I loved all of your suggestions Mike your's were great. But people you have all seemed to forget along with their precious head tilt those darling little tongues sticking out just a litte out of their little mouths, don't know about you guys but when Stellina does that and often she does lol she can get away with murder and she kows it lol ...........even Gizmo will let her get away with it lol

I've been trying to think of how to capture the essence of a Yorkie. One thing keeps coming back to me. Large dog in a small body. They are the most fru fru, prissy looking dogs and yes we dress them in clothes and put bows in their hair, but underneath all that is a real dog! My Sadie looks like is all looks and no substance but underneath that is a fiercly loyal very un-prissy dog. She is taking obedience and agility classes and she loves to track chipmunks and squirrils. They are terriers through and through and their nose definately works for something other than being cute - although they have cute down to a science!

cute animation of all breeds...especially yorkie. click on all three numbers to hear them describe themselves. Move your mouse around to make their heads follow.

Don't forget that little tongue tip peeking out :D That tounge is as much a trademark Yorkism as the head tilt ;) SPOILED SPOILED SPOILED....you will often see their little heads (with bows, of course) peeking out of purses everywhere ;) And if you ever lose your Yorkie....look behind you :D Sugar is always under my feet "what ya doing Mommy? Where ya going Mommy? What about me?"

Here's what I'm getting... You love to dress up, spoil and perhaps pamper these dogs. But they are very smart, seriously motivated to get what they want, and have the same instincts for hunting, etc as larger dogs. Is that about right?

Also, can someone please tell me whether there are specific types of Yorkies, or do they simply vary in size, color and grooming like all dogs do?

Yep - pretty much that's it! There is only one standard for the Yorkshire Terrier, but in reality they vary a great deal like all dogs.

I actually saw this on another thread today....I hope they mind that I borrowed it but this is the best example of the famous yorkie head tilt that've seen so far. There was a video with a yorkie who was doing the head tilt if I find I will post it but for now all I have is this pic
