I just got this little guy a couple of days ago (3 months old). My two big concerns are weaning him from my bed, I did get a large crate and plan on starting tonight. He is very quiet, but cries and barks when he can't see me. My neighbor across the street shows his two dogs, and said to just put him in the crate with some water and be prepared for a couple of sleepless nights. Now, I don't want to ban him from the bed forever. If I put him back in bed when he settles down, will I undo everything?

My other concern is housebreaking him. Any tips here. When he goes outside I praise the hell out of him and say nothing if he goes in the house. Any tips on this forum?

Thanks a lot, and glad I could find a place to communicate with others. I've never even owned a dog before, and this is also my first yorkie. I just love this little guy.

Hi and welcome

You will have to put up with some crying for a night or two but if you put the crate next to your bed he might settle faster. A clock that ticks wrapped in a blanket helps too. Also if you put a shirt you have worn in the crate with him he will smell your scent and feel better..

If you let him up on the bed after he is used to the crate he will probably want to stay on the bed all the time. My dog (2yrs) spent all his time on the floor with his bed but I let him up on the couch after we got a pup to get a break from him for a while. Well we dont have the pup now but he still expects to stay on the couch.

When potty training him you have to keep him confined to a smaller area and bring him out every half hour or so to go. When he go's make a big fuss and treat etc. When you cant watch him have him in his crate or an ex pen with a pee pad etc so he wont wander and pee anywhere.

If you want to crate train him a "large" crate defeats the purpose. The crate should be only large enough for him to stand up and turn around comfortably. If too large he will have no qualms about going to the bathroom in there. He probably won't be able to "hold it " all night theough at this age.

Forgot to mention also that if you cover the crate with a blanket they like that and it makes them feel safe like being in a den.I agree as well that he has to be in a smaller space in his crate to train him or he will mess in his bed. You will have to take him out through the night as he cant hold it.

My dog has always sleep with me, but that has been my choice. I originally blocked off part of the kitchen for him with his crate, food, toys, and potty papers. He was always good about using his papers. I took him out real often and always praised for the good and ignored the bad. He is over a year now and still uses his potty paper on occassion when I can't take him out.

Ouch! Are you guys telling me I have to wake up every 1/2 hour to let him out of the crate and go outside?
