Buy a bottle of hydrogen peroxide. I had read that it was a basic supply first aid item and then filed that info away in the deep recesses of my brain.

Taffy is fine, guys. She never was sick but ...

This afternoon I fell asleep in the recliner and when I awoke, I saw a chewed open, EMPTY trial dose of fruit-flavored chewable Caltrate that came attached to my vitamin bottle. They were in a little foil trial packet.

Needless to say, when I awoke I saw the bits and pieces of foil on the floor and traced it to the contraband foil package and (as you might guess, had a slight panic). However, Taffy was just as happily hyper as ever.

The package did say "adult dosage" and "keep out of the reach of children" so I called the emergency vet to see what I should do fully prepared to take her in to have her stomach pumped. Instead, she told me to give a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting.

Getting it down her was a story in itself but it worked like a charm. In fact, it's quite interesting how this artifical calcium looks just like melted vanilla ice cream when it breaks down in the stomach. I say that because it was dotted with chewed up carrots (those of you who have ever "met" Taffy know that's her beloved treat).

She never acted sick at all. The emergency vet did tell us to watch for any lethargy but it never slowed her down much at all. However, it was slightly traumatizing simply because we didn't know what an OD of calcium might do to her.

I was glad to see though that the peroxide does induce vomiting. It's one of those things I would never have known without this problem sooooo...

If you don't have a bottle but you have a Yorkie full of mischief, you probably need to get one the next time you are at the store!

Yes, I have already had to use it with Bonnie 2 times.
The first time was after she ate a wild mushroom out in the yard.:eek:
They can scare us to death sometimes.

I am grateful that you shared this story with us. I will make sure that I always have hydrogen peroxide in my first aid kit. I am glad that your baby is OK.

Thanks for writing this. The other day I was trying to think what it was we had to give a dog to induce vomiting a long time ago for one of our dogs... just couldn't think of it. That's what we used. Needed to know just in case.... So glad you are both OK now. Big scare!

Glad she's ok!!! Thank goodness we've got a bottle from when I had a bad wreck in Knoxville and had to have stitches! It's unreal what our babies get into!

I've had to use it a few times. While dog sitting a few years back, the dog got into the kids easter basket and ate a chocolate rabbit. We got out the peroxide and got a baby dropper out and squirted it in her mouth....shortly after she started throwing up and was fine.

Peroxide has many uses.....I have a list of them saved on my computer.

the lid to my tylenol wasn't on properly and spilled everywhere yesterday. we were worried we missed picking one up, so you know- if ever! we now know what to do in case. i've been paranoid ever since.

I am a big believer in having a basic first aid kit on hand for our furbabies. You can't imagine how often I have been glad that I had Pedialite, Pepto Bismal, etc. right here.

SO glad taffy is ok :) i had an incident with my Suzi when she was just a puppy .... She got into my sons bedroom and ate a half eaten bowl of melted chocolate ice cream with choclate syrup on top > Oh yes, was I in a panic . I had to use the peroxide treatment on her, and pure chocolate came out, I do not know who was more upset, me or Suzi.
Goodness, that was something I like to forget ! Thank goodness for home treatment methods!
I Agree, it is very important to have this in your first aid , just in case of emergency. Our yorkies or any pups are quick to get into stuff they should not !

Yes Ladymom is right on. You need to have a yorkie first aid kit on hand. I think there is a sticky on here that tells the meds and dosages.
Keep index cards on hand in the kit that tell what to do for what. Also figure the dosage that is right for your baby (update every couple of weeks til they stop growing) Because believe me, if something bad happens, you do not want to be running around like a chicken with your head cut off trying to figure out what to give and how much.
Also get several baby measuring devices to be sure not to over/under dose. I dropper is a must, because no matter how sick they are, they will sometimes try to fight getting the meds. *expecially hydrogen peroxide:D*

It is usually in the first aid section. It has been used for wounds and cuts for ages, although they are now saying that is it not good for this use after the first initial cleaning , because it damages the cells that are trying to repair the cut or wound.

Be sure to get a baby medicine dropper, cause they won't drink it on their own:p

Wow, I didn't know that. I've always had hydrogen peroxide on hand though for when my kids scrape their knees or something like that. It's good to know that it's good for my fuzzbutts too. :D

thanks for the info! I like your suggestion of having things written down as I may remember these things (at least while I am not in panic mode) but I know hubby does not have a clue as to what to do with what.

Thanks for the tip Debbie! Glad to hear Taffy is fine and had no bad effects. It is amazing to me the things they find to get into! We use hydrogen peroxide for lots of things here and now I can add another potential use.

Thanks for all the kind well wishes for Taffy. Truth is, she never slowed down a beat. Evidently she has an iron stomach. Except for throwing up (which she did and kept on playing for the most part), you'd never have known anything was wrong. Of course, thankfully I got to it before it was absorbed into her system.

As far as the medicine dropper...I do have one here but the emergency vet said give a tablespoon and I just went the country way...

I got a tablespoon out of the drawer, poured the peroxide in it and while my husband held her, I pried her mouth open and poured it down. I didn't give her a chance to do anything but swallow it. (Of course, my husband said I got as much on him as I did in her so I put a bit more down her.)

Then (I promise I'm not making this up!) the little toot licked her lips like she enjoyed it! This from the Yorkie who doesn't like commercial treats! Not only does she have an iron stomach, she has the strangest tastes.

To the poster upline...I've never heard that about grout but how interesting. If I can get into my Suzy homemaker mode (I try to avoid it), I may try that!

To the poster who didn't know what it is and the one who said it's been found to retard healing... When I was growing up (late 50's, 60's) we went through bottles of this during the summer due to bicycle wrecks and gravel roads! It was the only medicine that would stop the tears because we would get so interested in watching it bubble as it hit the injury. Plus, it didn't sting like alcohol!

Don't Yorkies get into every little thing?!! I don't remember my previous puppies being like this. The other night Abby had something in her mouth. When I chased her down and pried her mouth open, it was an Ammodium pill in that little foil pack they come in. Thankfully, she had not yet chewed through the foil to get to the pill. Anytime she's outside I have to check her carefully when she comes inside, she likes to try to sneak contraband in with her. Sometimes it is a leaf, sometimes a little gravel rock (which she loves to chew on), or whatever else she can find in the yard.

I know exactly what you mean about the gravel, too. Taffy kept having these little black bit of gravel and I could not figure out where in the world she got them. (I even entertained the thought they were "petrified" raisins...LOL...before I discovered she was getting some of the decorative rocks out of the fireplace.)

We got her in April so I've had a box in front of the fireplace all summer but have finally bought a self-standing firescreen. (We have gas logs with a built in screen but that doesn't deter her.)

Hardly a week goes by that we don't have some instance of "wonder what this is/was" including the little piece of a strap from some brand-new sandals she brought to me as a trophy. (My husband had bought them for me when I had foot surgery and sent him for flip flops. He came out with these gosh awful, blue, gaudy, vinyl sandals. I wanted to hug Taffy for chewing them up but was afraid my husband would catch on...LOL NEVER would have worn them and even at a yard sale, they would have to be given away free...LOL) Couldn't even bring myself to scold her over that chew up...

By the way, since there is no way to ever know who may read a thread even after it is archived...

Just like with humans, you don't need to have your Yorkie throw up something that might/would cause even more damage coming up. In that case you need to get to the emergency vet asap for a stomach pump or whatever they could do to counteract the problem.

In this case, mine had ingested calcium tablets (Caltrate chewable) and since I could give the vet the time frame of the ingestion, she suggested I induce vomiting with the tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide since Taffy is 7 pounds.

I shared the experience in case it should ever help someone but didn't stop to think (until just now) that someone might use this when they should be getting to the vet instead.
