Please tell me what to expect, the recoop time how do you keep them still? . I just don't know how this is going to work out with DH and I working FT. I have been trying to set up some sitters. How did Bijou do in the crate. Jersey is not a fan of the crate

I'm not going to sugarcoat it to you, if he doesn't like a crate, it's going to be hard. Did he break a front or back leg. It makes all the difference in the world as to whether you'll need an xpen for him or a crate.

Bijou broke her back leg and the surgeon said she had to be in a tiny crate, just enough room to turn around in so that she didn't try jumping or standing up on just the two back legs. Bijou has pins and a plate in her back leg, but since it's an open cut they don't put it in a cast. The surgeon said 4 weeks of crate restriction. Bijou was only 9 weeks old when her break happened, so she bounced back super fast. The day after surgery she was starting to put some weight on her leg. By the second week if she was able to get away from you as you were changing her crate out she was running like crazy. Which made me flip as I thought for sure she'd re-brake it. How old is Jersey?

My sister's pup was 6 mths old when he jumped off a couch and broke his front leg. They just set it and kept putting a new cast on it every 2 weeks for 8 weeks  Poor baby had to be in his crate the whole time :eek: She's stronger than me as I couldn't stand making Bijou lay in her crate like that. But for my sister it was that they couldn't afford the surgery because her DH was laid off and just starting a part time job.

I will tell you that Bijou's surgery was almost 3,000. My sister's pup was 400 at the e-vet and 120 for each 2 week check up w/her vet which included sedation to remove the cast, take x-rays and recast it.

Please, feel free to PM me and talk more if I can help you in anyway I will. ((((Hugs))))

My Martini broke his leg months ago

My Martini broke his front leg months ago. Thank goodness they didn't need to put a pin in it. He climbed over my kitchen fence and fell onto my wood floor. I didn't keep him in a small crate. I made a cage about 4 feet by 2 feet. I also made a top, so he couldn't climb out. I put a small bed in his cage that was low to the floor, so there was no jumping into his bed everything was level. I used washable pee pads to keep his floor soft. I walked him on a leash, sat on the floor with him to play, so there was no jumping. I kept him from running. There was a lot of TLC involved. Thank goodness they gave him pain medicine and antiflamitory meds, as this helped him a lot. He slept a lot, which was good,so he rested his leg in the beginning. I saw my vet often and all went very well. My vet was very pleased with all the work I did with him to keep his leg safe. I did therapy with him after his leg was healed. I took him on small walks each day to get him to use his leg again. He is doing great now. All better and I got a gate with straight bars, so there's no more climbing gates anymore. :D Good luck to you. I am glad it's all over and Martini is happy and back to himself again.

Glad Martini had such a great recovery. Thanks for all the great ideas, I hope it goes as well for Jersey. How long was the whole healing process?

I forgot to mention he had a soft cone around his neck, so he couldn't chew on his leg, which he was very comfortable with.:p To my surprise when they took off his cast no one ever cut his hair. A little brushing and combing slight and he looked great.

Your welcome. It was 8 weeks.

jolissa 11-08-2009 05:46 PM

The hard thing was giving him a bath, as his leg couldn't get wet. The vet made a plastic bag for me and my daughter held his leg up while I washed him. I dryed him very well and his cast too to make sure it didn't get wet at all. I used wet ones everyday on his private parts to keep him clean, so he didn't have to take a lot of baths, but I had to brush him everyday because the cone made his hair around his neck knot so I used a leave in conditioner on him that helped a lot.

OMG, I am so sorry, wishing jersey a speedy recovery, My Prada broke her leg at 15 weeks, she recovered but now she is very fearful of hights and she never never goes down from the bed without the stairs..

Get better soon Jersey! And be a good boy for your Mommy....

My Max jumped off our back deck and its maybe 10 feet or so. I would have NEVER imagined that he would jump it since it was so tall but I about absolutely DIED. I cannot begin to tell you the anxiety that I felt! Fortunately, he was fine and acted like it was nothing!

ritzydaisy 11-08-2009 08:23 PM

Take care, Jersey, and get well soon!

Awww, I hope Jersey heals quickly poor thing. This is a fear of mine with Bailey, always worried he will hurt himself.

Dh was with him, I was in our house and did not see or hear anything. DH said Jersey was screaming. We took him to the vet (our vet is the greatest) he x-ray and confirmed it is fractured, he splinted it and tomorrow we are taking him to an orthopedic to have it set. Poor baby looks so sad. So we get back home and try to put him down to pee and what does he try to do? He starts growling at a dog next door like he is going to chase it!!!! At least that made feel confident that he is going to be OK:animal36

Oh heck, what a major bummer!!!! I didn't come on, yesterday, because I was at work, and too tired, when I got home, but just read about Jersey's accident :(...Prayers and all the best for a speedy recovery...Sounds like he\'s got a real fighting spirit, and healing will be a piece of cake from him...Will look forward to hearing about his progress...
