Yorkies on the go!! Just curious how many people take their Yorkie with them everywhere they go. And if so, where do you take them? And....have you ever been somewhere and were told that you could not have your Yorkie with you there? I have taken my Sophia to the pet food store, grocery store (once), and to church (Sat. night youth group - of course the kids love her!!) :) I'm just wondering if there are places where there are "NO DOGS ALLOWED!!" |
I take my dogs everywhere I can. My kids' schools don't allow dogs, so I have to leave them at home when I take them to drop them off. :) We just got back from a day trip to Los Angeles and both the dogs came with me - no problems with them not being welcome anywhere today! |
First Outing I took Sydnee for her first outing, we went to the Bank, Pet store and to Wally World. Not one person said NO DOGS ALLOWED. The problem was all the people we met wanting to touch her. She was in my purse and only her head kept coming out to look. I kept telling everyone sorry no we don't allow her to be touched except by family members. She really rode well in the car well except she kept wanting to sit on my shoulder, so I have a sweat shirt that I wear and I just zip her up in it. The doggy seat belt is still toooo big for her, and while in the car she wouldn't ride in my purse. Viki |

This is Schatzie's purse. She grew out of her last one. She loves this one and it also is airline approved which is a big plus to us since we air travel. It also has a hook inside if I need to attach it to her harness and short leash if I fear she might jump out. Yes, I have been politely asked to leave the premises one day when I walked into my hair dresser's holding Schatzie. They acted like I was spreading the plague or something. I politely made my hair appt. then walked out. She obviously was not a Yorkie lover, and I called her a brat under my breath! |
When it was summer I would bring Amber everywhere with us. But ever since it got cold and snowy it became harder to take her along. I really do not like her to walk in the mud and snow to much because she will get way to dirty. I have a 11 month baby which makes it difficult to carry them both when we go out. So I guess I will start bringing Amber along with us again when my daughter can walk without help. |
We take Toto everywhere ... the only places we can't is the grocery, nice restaurants [unless they offer outdoor dining], and Wal-Mart! I hate Wal-Mart and generally don't go there unless it's an absolute necessity! We took her in Target and they didn't object! She is happy in her bag and never gets out when we are shopping. We rarely go places that won't allow her! I really don't understand some of the policies [a place that sells food, yes, I understand] ... for heaven's sake, I see people that are not as clean as Toto in some of these places! Besides ... don't they realize they are losing money? I know I am not the only "shopaholic" that shops and doesn't look at price tags!! ;) |
I take Snoodles with me anytime I can. I don't have a purse for her, so I think I will look into that. Wal-Mart let her in one time, and the next time wouldn't! I guess it depends on who is manning the doors! I hate leaving her home when we go to dinner, but it can't be helped, I guess! Pat |
Keena goes to the bank with me, and me and my boyfriend take her fishing sometimes, but she gets car sick easily. :( She is fine if she is in the back seat by herself! She also likes to play with her beagle friend saydee! :p (My friends that are a couple.. we went to school with!) |
i took toby to my classes when he was really little, i have gotten into wal mart and had a shopping cart full of stuff, and then one of the associates sighted me with my friends yorkie in my purse and ESCORTED ME OUT OF THE STORE!! , keep in mind i allready had my cart going and they just left it there like it was nothing, one customer doesnt make a difference ! well, needless to say i only go there when it is necessary as well, i certainly dont go as often as i did before that incident. |
When my boys were puppies I got them into WalMart, they saw them and asked me to leave, and I told them, I am not going to be here long, know exactly what I want and then I will leave. They let me go in. My beef is that none of the picture studios, walmart, penneys, sears here will take portraits of my babies. Seeing some of the runny noses on these toddlers makes me think that at least I know my dogs are healthy. |
I take Tinker EVERYWHERE!! I hate leaving her home. Unfortunately I have been kicked out of a couple places. One day I went to Bed Bath and Beyond and they told me I had to leave eventhough I had Tinker in a little dog purse. My said she went back the next day and they had a sign in the window that said NO DOGS. I have also been asked to leave Walmart everytime I go. I have been to different ones and they all tell me I can't have her in there. So I now go to Target where the manager even comes out to say hi. I can understand big dogs, but seriously what is a 2 1/2 lb dog going to do. I don't let her touch anything, and she doesn't bark, but whatever. Can you tell I'm a little bitter? Just kidding =). |
If any of the Wal-Marts or Targets carry food (ie Super Wal-Mart and Target) then I can totally understand not allowing dogs. It's against health code and they can be closed down (even just for a small 2 lb dog). I can't really take Ranger many places around here as no one is pet friendly except the Pet Stores. He does get to travel when we go see family, but that's about it. |
I have been to the grocery store with Tink all the time and they have never said anything, but I do live in Austin,TX which is supposed to be very dog friendly. I think it all depends on where you live. Some places are very relaxed about dogs, and some are not. Most the places here don't care, but I always worry about walking by someone who is extremely allergic to dogs. I mean how awful would you feel if you walked next to someone who had a reaction? I would feel terrible. |
Huh that's funny, we visited my SIL in Austin a few months ago and went to Toys R Us and they wouldn't let Ranger in. We even tried another store around that strip and they said no too. The poor guy had to wait in the car for a few minutes unitl it was time to leave; thank goodness it was pretty outside and we could crack the windows!! |
Hmm. I have been to Toys R Us here and didn't have a problem. I take her to the mall, grocery store, to the salon, and a lot of other places. I guess I have just been lucky then. I just moved her about 2 years ago and was told Austin was supposed to be dog friendly, but maybe that's wrong. I just noticed that you're from Dallas, how are they there? My brother and his family live in Southlake. |
I really don't even bother attempting to take him places, as I've seen many people get rejected with their small dogs. Some places, if you know the right people, don't mind. I can take him into my mom's bank and they love him, but I took him to my bank and they asked me to use the drive through. And now that he's gotten bigger, I don't even try. Besides he's never home alone except for a few hours early in the morning. But yes Austin is a very Liberal area so I figured it wouldn't be a big deal, but I guess it all depends on whose working and if they are in a good mood ;) . |
I take my puppy with me when I go anywhere in the car and if I'm going to be really quick, leave him in the car in his airline carrier. If not, I'll stay in the car with him and make someone else go in. I take him when I go to people's houses and if they don't want him running around he has his carrier, so its not a problem. I want to buy a puppy carrying purse, but don't have the money at present. I think I'll start sneaking him places. As for my dog not being allowed in a store that sells food... my dog is cleaner than a lot of the people walking around, sneezing, coughing and touching the food! I don't think it should be a problem if the dogs are under a certain weight and they sit in the cart and behave. I was watching a show about progeria and the little girl took her Yorkie with her everywhere and no one complained. I mean, the poor girl was sick, let her take the dog! I want to visit Europe... I've also heard that they are easier on pet owners. Has anyone been there and found this to be true? I know French ladies take their dogs with them to the salon sometimes. I think its stupid my dog can't go with me hardly ANYWHERE in the US. Like I said, he is much cleaner than half of the populace. Breath smells better, too. :P haha |
Catrienne, I feel the same way!! I mean I am not going to let Tinker touch anything, and it is not like she's walking around on a leash. She's always in a dog purse. I give her baths all the time so she's clean, and she has had her shots. She's healthy as a horse. If she was sniffing the food or touching it I could understand, but I don't let her. I think yorkies are taking over and they will soon have to cave in on their rules =). |
Mia goes EVERYWHERE with me. When I first got her I was naive and didn't know they weren't allowed in some places, and we were asked to leave Linens n' Things! Because I know a 1 lb puppy in a carrier can cause SO much damage! ;) Now I just hide her if we're somewhere she's not supposed to be. The way I see it is she is cleaner and smells better than most children, there is no reason she shouldn't be allowed to go in places! (plus she's even dressed better most of the time!) ;) |
I'm afraid I will have to be the voice of dissent on this topic. :( As far as anywhere I go outside or to friends or relatives homes, sure........But I don't believe any animal belongs in a bank, mall, Walmart, or grocery store. If I go on short trips to any of the above, Gracie stays in her carrier in the car. Then we go for a walk in the park or wooded area for her to sniff the EARTH. I would never take her to a salon..........all those chemicals????????NO WAY. Guess I'm just funny about some things................ :D I'm not much on pet purses either........I know I will get a many a raised eyebrow....but I don't think they are safe. Oh well, let me have it...................... |
everyone has their own opinion and thats cool :).... i would like to take toby with me to wal mart but, i think it is more for my peice of mind than for his and that i guess can be classified as selfish :p ...... i wouldnt carry toby in a purse... it would make my shoulder fall off...lol..... hes an 8lbnder and i wouldnt enjoy luggin him around everywhere.... he prefers to walk anyways..... where in the earth do you find a wooded area??..lol..... most wooded there is here is the ortegas... and thats not safe for a yorkie... best i can get is teh park and i dont take him there because they spray chemicals on the grass :( .... |
oh, sorry....... just an afterthought....... i wouldnt take him into a salon either, ...... I DONT EVEN GO IN THERE!!!! The smell is WAY TO STRONG for me, imagien the reaction toby would have!!!! |
I love taking Apple ( my chi) in the car with me whenever I can......when the weather is warm...she refuses to wear a sweater and gets so cold so easily....and she is just now learning to love riding in the car. I have not yet taken Lil Bit anywhere but the vet..I am too afraid of her "catching" something until we have all her shots straight. But I can't wait to take her, too. Going to the vet she just lays in her little carrier and sleeps!!! As for going to Europe.....YES...they love dogs!!!!! I went to Paris about 12 years ago and was amazed to see dog everywhere....INSIDE the NICEST reastraunts!!!!....in bakeries...(the BEST bakeries in the world!!!)....in the perfume salons!!! Everywhere. And I loved the Yorkie cuts their dogs had....when I got home I took Oscar to the groomer and described the cut....went to pick him up and he was shaved and looked like a fat schnauzer!!!! (Never did that again!!!) LOL LOL LOL |
texas?? I am going to Texas the first of March and taking Sydnee with me. They won't let her fly on the plane with us (my son and I) so I am going to drive. I don't feel right leaving her with anyone or in a Kennel. So I hope Houston and South Padre are dog friendly or I won't be going back to see my best friend every year she will have to come here. ;) Viki PS when I get back I will let you know if they treated my baby with love and respect. The kid is 20 he can look after himself. He says he finds it strange that he isn't the baby any longer and that his SISTER has a better pedigree than he does. I told him not to worry I paid more for him than Sydnee. Anyway, the Beastie, ( my son) says, are people really that paranoid about something so small that if you aren't shown the tiny little thing you wouldn't even know it was around. Hey I remember when he was younger not going some places if children weren't welcome, and I really feel the same way about Sydnee. So be assured the first time Wally World says GO BEGONE I will right to Target. I don't do Salons, and probably won't have a problem leaving Sydnee once she is older but right now she is so tiny, hey I lose her in her bed. Viki |
I think it all depends on the dog. Mia is pretty well behaved and is easily hide-able so I take her everywhere. I personally don't think its safe at all to leave them in the car. People have offered me the craziest things for Mia, I've even had a guy beg me to give her to him right then and there for $5000, and with all the toy dog-nappings that occur nowadays there's no way I would leave her in the car alone, not to mention heat concerns! I knew a girl who left her dog in the car for literally just 3-5 minutes in 75 degree weather and it got heat stroke and had seizures. Viki, what airline wouldn't let you fly with your dog, Southwest? They are the only ones I know off that dont allow it. I fly with Mia all the time because I travel a lot and take her with me! |
I take Tiko everywhere that I can because we don't leave him alone in the house yet. He's so attached to me, I'm trying to get him used to me not being with him all the time. If I go out and leave him with dh he gets sad, won't play as much and will be laying around starting at the door waiting for me to come back. So I have no idea how I'll be able to leave him at home alone, it's gonna take a lot of time, but that said. When he was smaller I took him to walmarts a few times. Some employees saw him and didn't say anything, one told us to be careful not to get caught by the managers. Then one day we were stopped at the door going in. Ever since then one of us will stay in the car with him while the other shops. I also took him to JCPennies, to some stores in the mall, Rite-Aide, at Targets I was told not to bring him the next time, but I wasn't asked to leave. Orinskye like your Toby, Tiko is a big boy, he's 7 months and weights 6 1/2 lbs. though I think he probably lost a pound after being starved for 32 hours because of the neutering, so it's not as easy taking him into stores as when he weighed 2-3 lbs. BTW, Toby is gorgeous, he looks just like Tiko, except that Tiko is a little more hairy right now, but we're gonna give him the puppy cut again, and just like Toby he has the cutest floppy ears. I must make the time to put up Tiko's picture but I still have to figure out how it works. |
Fortunately for gracie, where I live is zoned agriculture.........plenty of woods and fields, my neighbors NEVER use chemicals on their lawns and we are organic gardeners :) . I don't take gracie to friends houses that use pesticides on their lawn or ornamentals or gardens................I went thru a master gardener class thru the Cooperative Extension office (thru VA. Tech.) and so I KNOW where danger lies in that regard........you can always check with your recreation and parks system to find out which areas are safe for pets out in the public. As far as leaving gracie in a carrier in the car.........the upper temp must be 60 or lower, I leave the windows cracked, doors locked, and am never gone for more that a few minutes............. :) Longer than that, or warmer than that Gracie stays at home. :) My car windows are also UV protected :) AND my vehicle has a very NASTY alarm system............. ;) I guess its all a matter of personal preference.........many people are not aware of all the toxicity in the public domain. |

OH and my 3lb Yorkie isn't allowed on the city bus, which I find HILARIOUS. I've had to ride it to get downtown to campus before I could drive and FIRST of all, a lot of people who get on the bus smell really bad and its bad enough to gag... its enroute to the county hospital and veterns hospital, so lots of people aren't dressed well, either. Why can't my dog go if he stays in a purse??? He doesn't smell and he doesn't bark. Pfffffssssh. I can never leave my dog alone in the car, either. I'm afraid someone would steal him. I have left Maddie in the car by herself for a few minutes, but she weighs 18lbs and she is ferocious. lol I pity the 'po 'foo that tries to nap Maddie. hahaha |

I have taken Otis to: the hair salon (very dog friendly...maybe because they're in Berkeley.) the movies grocery store Target Nordstrom (very dog friendly) Neiman Marcus Saks Anthropologie (very dog friendly) the bank the post office Pet Food Express Longs Vietnamese Pho Noodle House for pick-up only Papyrus Office Max Article Pract yarn store (very dog friendly) Places we've been kicked out: WalMart Sur La Table |
I was at the mall this afternoon and I saw a girl walking with a yorkie puppy in a clear purse that had no room for more than a wallet. I thought it was cruel. He obviously couldn't breathe or be comfortable in there. Then I went into Foot Locker and there was a Shih Tzu in a black Samsonite carrier watching his mom try on shoes. |
