purchase belly bands while you work in training it will save your house

Aww so sorry, when my girls was not potty train I use that Nature miracle, people here have giving you good advice here already;)

Sweetlips6 11-01-2009 05:55 PM

Good advise from everyone here. Go back to potty training 101. I would get an xpen and only give him freedom for good potty behavior or when you can watch him every second. You can purchase a top if you are afraid he will jump out or crawl over. Also if you feel it is marking and not just peeing, get some belly bands for your own sanity.

I was in the same boat you were in. Cooper was neutered at 6 mo. and in an x-pen or crate most of the time but my DH got sick and couldn't help me watch/train him and things went south real fast. we has to sell our house and move to a mobile home so I could care for my hubby and the house. ( I had a 15 room farm house and 4 acres to mow)

I was apalled when we moved the furniture and found all the spots Cooper had marked on the rugs. Embarrassed to say the least. I was able to clean it up but I vowed he wouldn't do it at the new place.

He gets a lot of attention and walked around the neighborhood morning and night. he is put on the chain about every 3 hours ( it was more often but he is starting to go to the door on his own so it let him stretch it out)

I keep a belly band on him the rest of the time. I get the satiny ones from HandicappedPets.com they are not expensive and wash and dry great. I have 4 and wash them every day. Cooper is a "Teapot" and weighs about 10 lbs so I buy him a size small then I buy walmart brand Poise pads so they are for urine. cit them in half and your good to go. I always wash him in between. It is just like I did when I had my kids. LOL. some ppl use baby wipes I Just use washclothes. I bought packs of 18 for like 4.00 and they were real soft. I use the same color for the dog.

Hope this helps some hang in there I think everyone is right they are slow to train.

Forgive me, I haven't read all the posts, so I'm not sure if I'm just repeating someone else...I think it is nearly impossible to really train a dog, if you have carpet, because no matter what you use to clean the carpet, the "scent" will always be there in the padding, tempting them!!!...I worked for 6 months, trying to get Apple trained, and couldn't get it done...After I took out the carpet, and put in laminate, she was trained in less than two weeks...I knew, when I use nature's miracle on the laminate, it really did get it all up...I took her out, regularly, and praised (and gave treats) for outside potty successes...As soon as she goes, I tell her good girl, lets go get a treat...Not sure if this is feasible for your situation, but it sure worked for us...Good luck!!!

It's true, it's much easier to train them on a hard surface than carpet, because carpet is so much like the pee pads, and as you say, the scent draws them back. Most people make the mistake of trying to "mask' the scent, but if you understand that urine if mostly a sterile liquid with proteins, you will understand that you need a cleaner that can get rid of the proteins. That why enzyme cleaners work, they have a special "good" bacteria that actually eat the protein, but this takes time, and you spray it on and leave it on the surface to dry overnight. You can take a black light and find all old stains that you've cleaned, but haven't taken all the protein away, they show up iridescent, and dousing them with the enzyme cleaners works well.

[QUOTE=JennaK;2862766]thanks for the welcome guys.

i can't do the crate, some days that would be 10 hours. QUOTE]

I have many of the same problems. Infact, this is partly why I signed on today.

I had to make the decision yesterday to crate her all day. She used to be in a 6' round pen with sides 45" high.... HA! Her 7" high body at 5 pounds (4 months old) jumps right over it like a professional acrobat - never missing a step. I came home to my house being destroyed - verticle blinds eaten, toilet paper absolutely every where - shoes torn up - and this was being left alone for all of 3 hours!

So, yesterday I went and bought the largest crate Petco had in stock. 48" long *30" wide, 32" high. She simply has to be crated with a lid when she is not actively being played with - which is an unbelievable amount of time). There are no other choices.

I feel horrible. I feel as though she has been placed in jail. But there are no other choices until she is trained. We are lucky - she does pee on the pad - but poops where ever she takes a notion - but she's at that puppy teething stage - chewed up one of my dining room chair legs like a teething ring... it was $700 just for the one chair. She has toys galore. She is simply out of control. We start training classes November 7 - cannot come soon enough!!

Sorry this is so long - just wanted you to know you can crate your little baby all day - Just buy a large one. I paid right around $100 for this one. has room for her bed, her feeder (gives her lunch and treats throughout the day according to a timer - love this thing!!), and her pad - all being a comfortable distance form each other and still room to play.

I've attached a pic of Mandy in her new "day" home

I would try the belly band. It will save your rugs and once he pees in it, he probably won't do it again.

JennaK 11-07-2009 12:51 PM

well we're getting an xpen this weekend and he'll have to be in it while we're at work i guess. I will have to find one with a top because I know for a fact that he will climb over any height I get. He is not nuetered but I wonder if it would even matter to have it done now. Is it too late for it to help with marking if thats what he's doing? I've pulled up all the rugs in the front rooms of the house and he's closed out of the back rooms so no more carpet. :( i really liked my rugs! oh well. belly bands sound interesting to me. didn't know the existed. I'll have to check them out to. thanks everyone.:D

I used to give all kinds of great advice on this -- until I got a puppy!

I've had Jillie in an x-pen except when I'm watching her, but she always seems to sneak one in when I let my guard down. And I think that's really the secret. Either keep them in the Xpen or don't let your guard down. I read on one behaviorist's web site that you should keep them leashed when they're not in the xpen to make sure you don't miss any. I have a hard time doing that, hence my slow progress. She's almost 7 months. She uses a litter box exclusively in the X-pen. She has no problem going outside. She just doesn't let me know when it's time to go outside.

Good luck! Eddie took 9 months, and he's the smartest dog I've ever owned. I'd be happy with that with Jillie!

I don't think so. I've had an older rescue dog nuetered and it made a huge difference immediately.

Ladymom 11-07-2009 04:45 PM

As the others have pointed out, it's not a housebreaking problem, but typical behavior for an unneutered male dog.

He's young enough that neutering may help, although you will have to work really hard afterwards to modify his behavior. No free run of the house. Leash him to you when he is out so you know what he is doing at all times and verbally correct him if he starts to mark.

Wow, you have gotten a lot of excellent advice!!
