I just don't think I can do this much longer. Brawndo is a little over a year old and still not even close to potty trained. He knows where he is supposed to go he just wont. He's ruined 2 rugs in my house. I just don't know what to do. I've tried everything. |
I really have no expertise at all in this because our baby came potty trained just from watching her mother. However, I do have a suggestion. Of course, it's possible you have already tried it. If there is a particular spot you can pinpoint as the place your pet loves to soil, I would put a pad there. It may look out of place but then you can move it a little each day until it eventually gets to the place you want. I have no idea if this will work or not but it follows the theory of building on past learning and starting with something they know. Good luck! Almost forgot....welcome to Yorkie Talk! |

Also, what do you clean the area that he's going potty at with? You need something to remove the enzymes that he's smelling and you aren't. Here's a link to one of many products Petsmart sales, but you can get it at most pet stores: Nature's Miracle Stain & Odor Remover - New Puppy Center - Dog - PetSmart Even at a year old, you may have to go back to puppy type potty training. When I first got Bijou, Barley was jealous and started going pooh inside, I went back to crating him and after two weeks of that, he's back to being a good boy and going potty outside. Welcome to YT!!! |
I couldn't trust my Pixie until she was over a year....I just think it takes these little dogs alot longer than other breeds...for whatever reason. Just keep doing what you are doing...confining when not being watched, take outside after every meal, drink, playtime sleep etc...and reward reward reward!! EVERYTIME my Pixie goes out to potty she gets a treat from a box i have next to the door...she runs in and sits there waiting for it! even now she will still have the occasional accident...but its usually our fault for not reading the signs! I'm pretty sure your little one will catch on soon...don't give up!:) |
Potty training I got Cloey when she was 13 months old and she had never been potty trained! I have now had her 6 months and she is first starting to pee outside. It takes a long time, but how can you not love them, anyway PS....I also bought a Hoover carpet washer. Cathy |

Teddy came to our house pad trained but when he first got home with us this is what I had to do and it worked!! Good luck!! Don't give up on your baby!! |
I have two pups around most days, I put the potty pad in their favorite spot, take them out every hour, and put pants on them if I suspect they are going to miss (Luna has a UTI). It is like puppy boot camp here, daily groomings, hourly potty breaks, lots of feet, mouth, and ear handling, and frequent training (back, sit, leave it, etc). We still have accidents, but I think they are getting it. |
thanks for the welcome guys. We live in the desert so our yard is dirt stickers and cactus so no outside potty for the pup. we've put up pads in the garage with empty kitty litter boxes lining the walls since he's a leg lifter. he doesn't have one spot he likes in the house. pretty much anything he can lift his leg on. dining room table and chair legs, coffee table, open doors, doorways, any chair or couch, this morning i discovered the recliner, curtians...it's just everywhere. i can't do the crate, some days that would be 10 hours. I've tried gates in the kitchen, he climbs over. when I take him out to the garage and tell him "go potty" he goes right to the pads and pees then runs to me for a treat. although I've caught him picking his leg halfway pretending that he peed and then wanting his treat. I've stayed out with him for up to 1.5 hours and the second we come back in the house he pees. when I catch him and tell him no he just looks at me an keeps going never even thinking about putting his leg down. I've used several enzyme cleaners and none of them make a difference to him. he doesn't seem to care if the spot is clean or if it has been peed on a thousand times. I've never really seen him sniff for a place before he goes. he just walks right up to something and lifts. it's extremly frustrating. I love him to death but I just don't know what to do anymore. |
Have you tried an xpen to contain him in? If you're giving him the run of the house while you're gone it's hard to control his actions. How about using a belly band on him too? |
I, too, am inexperienced and this might not be legitimate advice but.. I'm sure others have had to crate their dogs for 10 hours or such before. Especially to establish potty training, it's not like it has to last 'forever'. I can't see any other way unless you paid to get some sort of a professional trainer to help you somehow. That's just basing on books I've been reading on training. |
1 Attachment(s) I think you may have mentioned the only thing I have not tried yet. I guess I'll have to look into getting a pen for him. wish I would have thought of that sooner! hopefully I can find one he can't climb out of. we've had 3 different kinds of gates at different heights and he's climbed over all of them. I don't see how. He's only 6 little pounds! |
He is so cute. I hope you can hang in there a little longer. It took a little over a year for my two to catch on but once they did, they really got it. It's like the light bulb went on one day and they said "oh I get it now". We reward with treats for a job well done. They run in the house so proud of themselves and looking forward to their treats. At first we wondered if they would ever learn but they did. Good luck. |
Has he been neutered, he sounds like he's marking not peeing, remember that's different, and the same methods don't work. Also, you must clean an area with a cleaner designed to remove all protein from carpet, otherwise they will return to the same spot, the enzyme cleaners, such as Nature's Miracle work wonderfully and they is no way he should be ruining carpets. If it turns out he is marking, you should either have him fixed or many breeders use belly bands, and take them off them when they take the dogs to pee. Taking your dog lessens the need for marking in the house too, even neutered dogs love to mark their terrietory, and short walks can help with this. |
Believe me I am NO expert... This is what I did with max though. He had an x-pen that I kept him in in between potty breaks. Then we he seemed to get it about going out I made his "world" a little bigger. The whole Laundry room (tiled floor for easy clean up). Then that became the entire kitchen and laundry room. His world got bigger as he caught on. Always in an area or floor type with easy clean up. Not wood and not carpet. I removed him from the view of the "mistakes" before I cleaned them up so he could not see me cleaning it up. Always used Natures Miracle even on tile floor. Also if we caught him going or finishing, we took him RIGHT outside. Whether he was done or not. If he started regressing, he went right back to his smaller world that he just left. If he kept going in the smaller area, it was back to the even smaller area. He would not go where he slept (crate). Does your pup go where he sleeps? Max is a year and 8 months now and has only had free run of the house during the day for about 3 months. He still sleeps in a 36 inch dog cage with his travel crate inside. He loves the den feel. Don't give up! :) |
Is your boy neutered? It sounds like he is marking, completely different from just your normal potty training. It takes longer and more patience to train them when this is the case. I would suggest wearing a belly band on him until he is trained. That way at least all of your furniture and stuff is protected from him peeing on it. What's his food schedule like? Do you free fed? Remember the more water he drinks the more he is going to mark. I have a couple methods you could try to train him with the marking issue, pm me if your interested. It's kinda long to put in a post. |
purchase belly bands while you work in training it will save your house |
Aww so sorry, when my girls was not potty train I use that Nature miracle, people here have giving you good advice here already;) |
Good advise from everyone here. Go back to potty training 101. I would get an xpen and only give him freedom for good potty behavior or when you can watch him every second. You can purchase a top if you are afraid he will jump out or crawl over. Also if you feel it is marking and not just peeing, get some belly bands for your own sanity. |
I was in the same boat you were in. Cooper was neutered at 6 mo. and in an x-pen or crate most of the time but my DH got sick and couldn't help me watch/train him and things went south real fast. we has to sell our house and move to a mobile home so I could care for my hubby and the house. ( I had a 15 room farm house and 4 acres to mow) I was apalled when we moved the furniture and found all the spots Cooper had marked on the rugs. Embarrassed to say the least. I was able to clean it up but I vowed he wouldn't do it at the new place. He gets a lot of attention and walked around the neighborhood morning and night. he is put on the chain about every 3 hours ( it was more often but he is starting to go to the door on his own so it let him stretch it out) I keep a belly band on him the rest of the time. I get the satiny ones from HandicappedPets.com they are not expensive and wash and dry great. I have 4 and wash them every day. Cooper is a "Teapot" and weighs about 10 lbs so I buy him a size small then I buy walmart brand Poise pads so they are for urine. cit them in half and your good to go. I always wash him in between. It is just like I did when I had my kids. LOL. some ppl use baby wipes I Just use washclothes. I bought packs of 18 for like 4.00 and they were real soft. I use the same color for the dog. Hope this helps some hang in there I think everyone is right they are slow to train. |
hello i'm so sorry you going thur this wit you baby . Here's how i potty trained me boy and he's 3 months old i got a xpen i got pee pads all around in it i use to lock him in until he peed or poop when i seen him smelling around you have to know the sign when he has to go first for most . than i let him out as soon as he did his business he was so happy i never use treats either so now the xpen is just his potty area he go in his self and poop or pee all by him self. he runs out go play like he knows he done good i always say GOOD BOY.. also i started using a water bottle with beans in it and i would shaKE IT if i seen he bout to go on my floor and i would grab him up take him to his potty place he got it . we still have some accidents but i love him |
Forgive me, I haven't read all the posts, so I'm not sure if I'm just repeating someone else...I think it is nearly impossible to really train a dog, if you have carpet, because no matter what you use to clean the carpet, the "scent" will always be there in the padding, tempting them!!!...I worked for 6 months, trying to get Apple trained, and couldn't get it done...After I took out the carpet, and put in laminate, she was trained in less than two weeks...I knew, when I use nature's miracle on the laminate, it really did get it all up...I took her out, regularly, and praised (and gave treats) for outside potty successes...As soon as she goes, I tell her good girl, lets go get a treat...Not sure if this is feasible for your situation, but it sure worked for us...Good luck!!! |

1 Attachment(s) [QUOTE=JennaK;2862766]thanks for the welcome guys. i can't do the crate, some days that would be 10 hours. QUOTE] I have many of the same problems. Infact, this is partly why I signed on today. I had to make the decision yesterday to crate her all day. She used to be in a 6' round pen with sides 45" high.... HA! Her 7" high body at 5 pounds (4 months old) jumps right over it like a professional acrobat - never missing a step. I came home to my house being destroyed - verticle blinds eaten, toilet paper absolutely every where - shoes torn up - and this was being left alone for all of 3 hours! So, yesterday I went and bought the largest crate Petco had in stock. 48" long *30" wide, 32" high. She simply has to be crated with a lid when she is not actively being played with - which is an unbelievable amount of time). There are no other choices. I feel horrible. I feel as though she has been placed in jail. But there are no other choices until she is trained. We are lucky - she does pee on the pad - but poops where ever she takes a notion - but she's at that puppy teething stage - chewed up one of my dining room chair legs like a teething ring... it was $700 just for the one chair. She has toys galore. She is simply out of control. We start training classes November 7 - cannot come soon enough!! Sorry this is so long - just wanted you to know you can crate your little baby all day - Just buy a large one. I paid right around $100 for this one. has room for her bed, her feeder (gives her lunch and treats throughout the day according to a timer - love this thing!!), and her pad - all being a comfortable distance form each other and still room to play. I've attached a pic of Mandy in her new "day" home |
I would try the belly band. It will save your rugs and once he pees in it, he probably won't do it again. |
well we're getting an xpen this weekend and he'll have to be in it while we're at work i guess. I will have to find one with a top because I know for a fact that he will climb over any height I get. He is not nuetered but I wonder if it would even matter to have it done now. Is it too late for it to help with marking if thats what he's doing? I've pulled up all the rugs in the front rooms of the house and he's closed out of the back rooms so no more carpet. :( i really liked my rugs! oh well. belly bands sound interesting to me. didn't know the existed. I'll have to check them out to. thanks everyone.:D |
I used to give all kinds of great advice on this -- until I got a puppy! I've had Jillie in an x-pen except when I'm watching her, but she always seems to sneak one in when I let my guard down. And I think that's really the secret. Either keep them in the Xpen or don't let your guard down. I read on one behaviorist's web site that you should keep them leashed when they're not in the xpen to make sure you don't miss any. I have a hard time doing that, hence my slow progress. She's almost 7 months. She uses a litter box exclusively in the X-pen. She has no problem going outside. She just doesn't let me know when it's time to go outside. Good luck! Eddie took 9 months, and he's the smartest dog I've ever owned. I'd be happy with that with Jillie! |

As the others have pointed out, it's not a housebreaking problem, but typical behavior for an unneutered male dog. He's young enough that neutering may help, although you will have to work really hard afterwards to modify his behavior. No free run of the house. Leash him to you when he is out so you know what he is doing at all times and verbally correct him if he starts to mark. |
Wow, you have gotten a lot of excellent advice!! Welcome to Yorkie Talk! |
