Unfortunately, Starr is VERY alpha. My vet told me to expect her to try to be the boss when her I took her for her first puppy visit. She barks at squirrels and rabbits in the front yard when she's perched on the back of the couch looking out the window, she barks at people walking in the street, she barks at other dogs barking a couple of blocks away, she barks at the dogs two houses over, she barks at the neighbors if they happen to walk outside while she's in the backyard, she barks at my kids when they come to the house and doesn't stop until they pick her and flip her over on her back or put her on their laps. It's a problem. I'm beginning to think a bark collar is my only option. |

I suggest you put one on for a day and see how it feels before putting it on her. |

My Lola barks more then the average dog. When she sees things she barks, if shes outside playing she will continue to bark as well as barking when she hears noises. I could NEVER imagine a bark collar, that just doesn't even sound good! I believe they shock the dog, I don't know how you could hurt your baby. |
Oh Good Lord! I have no intention of hurting my dog. I thought maybe this was the place to come for help in training her not to bark all the time. I don't live in the country where no one will mind. I have neighbors to worry about. I guess I came to the wrong place for help. Disregard. I'll call my vet. He's far more understanding. |

Might have been a good idea to think about the barking bothering neighbors before you got a pup. Yes, speak with your vet...great idea! And....perhaps open your mind to other ideas that are on YT. |

To the OP.......the Yorkie is a breed that has a habit of barking. Even though you will be home all day with your new pet, it may still bark. (Yes, this does not apply to all Yorkies. Yes, you can train the puppy to bark less.) If this will be a problem for your neighbors, you might want to hold off until your living situation changes.......otherwise you might end up as frustrated as the thread hijacker. I applaud the thought you are giving to this decision. Best wishes..... |
Please don't get upset.! Oh dear I am sorry you are not too happy about some of the responses you have had...I am sure that everyone is only trying to help.:) With regard to the Dog Collars..well in fact my neighbour who has a westie who barked a lot..did try a collar for a while...It didn't have any harmful effects on the dog at all...and the shock it gives them is minimal or they wouldn't be sold..! Most Yorkies do bark..I have owned 5 to date...my previous ones barked quite a lot..but this new pup is very quiet..so I am a bit lucky I guess..He does bark when alarmed etc. My neighbours used to complain to me a lot about my other yorkies barking when playing etc. but with some many other noises around it didn't bother me too much . I do hope you get somethig sorted.. Chrisann x |

There is no thread hijacker. I do not applaud people who plan on using shock collars. |

I also disagree. I took in a foster who had a shock collar when she was picked up by animal control. It took a long time to show her that a collar was not going to hurt her. She would hang her head and look so sad. I ended up adopting the little wild child. She was never trained properly...only with a collar I presume and Heaven only knows what other useless training. Took me a long while to get her to trust me and be the happy girl she is now. She is now living with me and a happy, albeit talkative, girl. I have taught her to speak to me rather than use her loud, shreaky voice to bark; but she does still bark a lot when running outside chasing birds. She is a wonderful girl. Matter of fact, she is my Cookie who is the Desperate Housewife in the Halloween contest. |
