Bursting into tears at the vet's office is kind of embarrassing... ...especially when the tears are because the vet tech weighed Sophie and her weight is still 2 lbs. 7 oz. She hasn't put on any weight in almost 2 months!! The vet examined her and said Sophie's healthy, that she just has a very small frame, and that because she now has her rear molars and is just shy of 7 mos., that she may be pretty much done growing. I was soooooo upset!! Weighing under 2 1/2 lbs. is just waaaaaay too fragile! My mom's Yorkie, Buddy, is 13 lbs. (healthy, not fat), and he's such a sturdy dog. I was hoping that Sophie would be AT LEAST 5-7 lbs, and would have been fine with her being bigger. Don't misunderstand: I adore Sophie and will love her no matter what size she is... but I just didn't think I'd end up with such a tiny dog. Has anyone else had a tiny dog at 7 mos. that went on to have a growth spurt and reached a healthier size?? Do you think there's a chance she'll reach the 5-7 lb. range?? Sophie's my first Yorkie, so I really appreciate your advice. |
I don't think I'd hold out for 5-7 lbs., but my Apple had a huge growth spurt between 8 & 9 months...she went from about 3.5 lbs. to 4.5 lbs., just in one month...then I switched her to raw at 10 1/5 months, and she gained another 1/2 lb. or so!!! Now I'm worrying about her gaining too much weight:rolleyes:...I think you might shoot for 4 lbs., and that would be o.k...the standard is 4-7 lbs., so there ya go!!! |
My Sadie weighed 2 pounds 12 ounces for several months. She turned a year old on Oct 2 and she has now gained a couple more ounces. she has very delicate features. She is the golden in my avatar. I'm hoping she at least fills out and gets up to 3 1/2 pounds. |
Cali and Roxie each put on about a pound from 7 months to about 14 months. So there is hope. |

Cooper gained almost a full pound between 1 and 1/2 years old.....it was a big growth spurt and even the vet was suprised thinking all along he would be about 4 to 4 1/2 lbs. We started feeding him Taste of the Wild Buffalo and he loved it and put on weight. He is always been long and lean and the vet always said he was a little under weight for his frame....not anymore. He ways 5 1/2 lbs now.......and he still seems like a really small guy. |

4 pounds is not the standard. The standard reads: Not To Exceed 7 pounds..... But, to give you a bit of hope.....I have a girl that was 3 1/2 pounds from about the age of 6 months, not skinny. At a year of age, she grew...she's 6 pounds. |

Also sometimes the scales can be off. Last time i took Uni to the vet, the tech weighed her and said 4.3 or something like that. I said what? no way. We weighed her again on a different scale and she was closer to 5 1/2. So that's a big difference. When they move around or don't stay still the scale will not read correctly. That's why i stay away from scales myself, b/c I don't agree with what it says. :p |
chester was a normal size and I wanted a 6 lb dog and now he is 9 lbs, because his eating habits have gotten better after he was a couple of years old, ya never know |
i think smaller yorkies grow for a longer period of time than other yorkies. when milu was 8 months old, she was 2.6 lbs, and people told me that they don't think she will grow anymore, but she did, she is now 20 months old and she is around 3lbs. i think your yorkie will still grow and put on some more weight, i am not sure how much more though. :aimeeyork milu did stop growing for a while just like your baby, she was 2.6 lbs for a couple of months, but then it was like she grew overnight. (after her spay surgery) |

To the OP: We thought ours was perfect or even a tad underweight but when we took her to the breeders recently, she thought Taffy was overweight and was concerned that we not let her get too heavy. Here I was worrying about her thinking we weren't feeding Taffy enough...LOL I agree with an earlier poster who commented about unhealthy weight. If your baby's frame is tiny, you don't want her to carry excess weight on her joints. By the way, she's a cutie! |
Hot Rod was 1.57 at 16 weeks when we got him. It took at least 2 mos before he got over 2 lbs! He is now 4.7 lbs at 2 yrs. old. Maggie was 2 lbs at 11 weeks and is now 4.5 lbs. at 1 1/2 years old. so there is hope. :) |
