How big is your yorkie?
 

I am thinking of getting one that is going to be between 4 and 5 pounds fully grown. I've read the smaller they are sometimes they can have more health issues -have any of you found this?
If you do have a really small yorkie,
Did you find them really fragile - can they ever jump up onto the couch and off onto the floor or if they are small is that just dangerous for their bones?

My little Zhoie is 4.4 and 9 mos old. To me she is just perfect!! haha.
I'm hoping she will hit at least 5 lbs, but not sure we will be making that goal. My little doesn't jump, which is fine with me so hopefully we won't have leg injuries. I've heard some to small does have more health issues, but the little ones are so darling. Zhoie is my 1st toy and it definately takes some getting use to, wouldn't want her any smaller. My breeder doesn't let hers come home until 12 wks, which I'm very thankful for, can't imagine having them before that. Plus, they learn so much from their mama and litter mates, proper mouthing etc. Enjoy!!:)

My girl is about 5.5 lbs. And I think she is a great size. I'd love for her to be more "sturdy" as in a bit more chubbier but I love her the way she is. I know your not suppose to let them jump and all that jazz but she has springs on her feet and always bouncing around lol My couch is lower then the usual couch and she has no prob at all jumping on or off of it. She can get up on the bed too and off of it.

She seems to have very strong legs.

My previous yorkie couldn't jump up on the bed and she had LP in her knees ( Luxating Patellas) She was about 4.8-5lbs.

I think 5-6 lbs is an awesome weight and much less worry!

My pup is not yet 3 lbs at 6 months. I find that with any yorkie it's about the breeding. You can have big pups with health issues just as well as a small pup.

Fiona is 19 months and is a LOVEABLE 12.4 lbs! :D

Brody is 5 1/4 pounds and I think he is pretty tiny . . .he's really a light weight, it's almost hard to imagine him being 5 1/4 pounds. To pick him up, you'd think he was smaller.

Rhianna is 6.5 pounds and feels a LOT heavier than that . . .she is built like a brick . . .very solid . . .I swear if I didn't know better I would think she was a good 8 - 9 pounds . . .:p

Both of them are short in stature . . my hubby built them a set of stairs so they can get up and down the couch without injuring themselves.

I love their sizes . . .anything smaller I'd be concerned about . . .Brody has the tendancy to get cold quickly when the weather changes . . he's always shivering with the slight bit of chill in the air . . .Rhianna wilts in the heat . . .she's very hot blooded and prefers the cold . . .

Small ones definately require a bit more care, weight being a contributing factor but, more so, bone density.

I have a standard size 5 1/2 pound male Champion that is extremely fine boned and I've worried about his breaking a bone for the entire 6 years of his life. I prefer a more medium boned yorkie.

My boy Jackson is 12.5lbs of love. :) I have a soft spot for the bigger Yorkies but the small ones are *very* adorable, too. :) I have heard of the tiny ones getting more health problems and they're fragile, for sure. I think it's just more work to watch them and care for them in general. Jackson was almost 5lbs when I got him at 9 weeks old and he seemed sooo small and fragile.

Mine is 5pds and can jump up anywere, even the back rest of a chair frot eh floor. She has springs in her legs i swear to god!!!! and for health wise you just dont know she has IBS and she just got it. No one else in her family has it. but with the right food and attention she is healthy :). Good Luck

I have an 8 yr old weighing 14.2 lbs, 6 yr old weighing 6 lbs. 1 1/2 yr old weighing 6 lbs, 6 month old weighing 4 lbs and a 5 1/2 month old weighing 3 lbs. They all play together and none have any health issues, thank goodness.:) The little one isn't tall enough to jump on the couch yet, he does jump down with no problems.

I remember before I got Josephine worrying myself sick with all the size related issues she might have, and I have to say most of my worries were unfounded so far. When we first got her she was a tiny (for me at least lol) 2 pounds and very fragile, but as time went on we realized Jo-jo wanted to be treated like a big dog, so we did. 2 and half pounds later Josephine is a very solid terrier despite her size.

It is true however that smaller yorkies have a bigger chance with health issues, which is why we did a lot of research when it came to picking a breeder. We found a breeder who breeds specifically for temperament and health and have so far had no issues with Jo-jo's health. Issues you should be looking for in the smaller dogs is; Hypoglycemia, Impacted teeth, Early tooth decay, Spinal injuries/ruptures, Collapsing trachea and Various intestinal issues.

We allow Josephine to jump up onto couches and chairs, but we don't alow her to jump off and the reason why is not because of her bones, but because of her joints. Jumping off from that high puts a lot of strain on the hips and knees and over time can become a real problem for Yorkies. You can however purchase/make steps three shoe boxes taped together in the shape of stairs works great. Good luck with getting your new baby. =)

Abby was 6.8 lbs. when she was spayed three weeks ago. She is a little over 7 months old now. The breeder assured me that she would be less than 5 lbs. full grown and although I love her unconditionally, I hope she doesn't grow any more. She can jump up/down from the couch, but not the bed which is good. A couple of times she has jumped from the bed before I could stop her and it scared me, but it didn't phase her at all. She loves the rough and tumble play and loves to run around outside. She isn't delicate at all, she is a tomboy I guess. From what I have heard and read the size of Yorkies is pretty unpredictable. My vet has a 12 lb. male Yorkie and his mother has a 4.5 lb. female, both from the same breeder, but not the same litter. I got Abby when she was 8 weeks old; most people say don't get one younger than 12 weeks because they the weight can be predicted better. If I ever get another Yorkie, I may wait until it's older, although she was so sweet and precious and fun as a little puppy I hate to think I would have missed that extra month with her!

My girl is 5.5 lbs and is sturdy. I think her size is perfect. Her son was so tiny I gave him to my sister rather than sell him. I was worried about his size. He is 7 mo old, and only weighs 3 lbs. He has a very fine bone structure which I am afraid could lead him to injuries. I would much, much rather have a yorkie with sturdy legs that feel like they can withstand all the jumping and running a yorkie does.

Cooper went to the vet today and he weighs 3.3 pounds and is 4 months old. Vet said he is healthy and his knees looked good, no looseness. Cooper climbs up our couch, like a cat. It is so cute to watch.

Vet said, although she can't say for sure, she predicts he will end up weighing about 5 pounds.

Bailey is 7 months and a few ounces over 3lbs. He bounces around like a ball, I swear he has springs in his legs! When he was under 3lbs I was a total nervous wreck always worried he would get hurt. I still worry, and hope he makes it to 5 lbs at least!
