He's in a kill shelter and only has till next Friday to be adopted, I'm cross posting this because I want as many people as possible to see this, and this little guy doesn't have much time. He is adorable...thank you, Nancy. I hope someone wonderful sees him and gets him out of there.

Oh Nancy! How sad is this? I sure hope someone can take him...it does so break your heart? C'mon someone...please? I'd take him, but then I suspect my husband will send me to the shelter!:eek:

What boils my blood about kill shelters is they do NOT hesitate in killing an animal, but they make it difficult to go get it. They won't let a person out of state adopt, and now this:

Because this animal was not chosed for adoption, it has to be adopted out through the Animal League of Gaston County or a 501c3 rescue can pull the animal out. This animal can be pulled out of the shelter after 4PM the day before it's euthanize date (the day before the PTS date in the dog's name on petfinder). ALGC will require a vet reference for people not from a 501c3 rescue stating that all pets are up to date on vaccinations, are spayed or neutered and dogs are on heartworm preventative. Adopters are required to get the animal vaccinated and spayed or neutered at their expense within 2 weeks of adopting the animal or by the time the animal is six months old. We have no kennels to house the animals, so they are required to be picked up by their PTS date, else they will be killed.

You can visit the animal anytime before it's PTS/release date at Gaston County Animal Control. The shelter is open daily from 11am - 5pm and the first Sat of the month. You missed all of the really important facts of what is going on at this shelter. Here is the entire story that was posted with the little guy.

THIS SHELTER USES THE GAS CHAMBER!!!!!

THIS IS A HIGH KILL SHELTER - ANIMALS WILL BE PUT TO SLEEP ON THEIR PTS DATE AND NEED TO BE CLAIMED BY 5PM THE NIGHT BEFORE THEIR PTS DATE. IF YOU ARE AT ALL INTERESTED IN THIS ANIMAL, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE - THESE ANIMALS LIVES DEPEND ON QUICK ACTION.

Please read the following description of the shelter's policies on pulling non-adoptable animals. If you are not with a 501c3 rescue, you will need to contact someone from Animal League of Gaston County to help you pull the animal.

We are a group of volunteers that try to help the dogs/cats at Gaston County get into rescues and adoptable homes, but we don't work at the shelter and don't usually have a lot of information on the animals (unfortunately). Animal Control employees do not do a thorough behavioral evaluation of the animal or a vet check and we can only guess as to what breed we think the animal might be - practically no animals come into this shelter with pedigrees, so there is no guarantee on animals being a specific or advertised breed. We just try to get their info out so people learn about them.

This animal was not slated for the adoption floor by the Animal Control Kennel person upon intake, so there is no adoption fee for the animal and the animal WILL BE EUTHANIZED on it's PTS (put to sleep) date. This shelter uses a gas chamber. There are many reasons why they are not slated for adoptions (underweight, overweight, shy or scared to be at the kennel (this is the typical reason and most dogs are freaked out by being at the kennel), obvious health issue (dogs and cats are not vetted at all), too old, or the owner says the dog is aggressive or has some sort of issue (this is another very common reason because owners turning animals into the shelter are afraid to admit out loud that they just don't want the animal anymore and make up an excuse as to why they are turning the animal in).

From what I understand there is a group of volunteers that monitor this GAS CHAMBER KILL SHELTER and post and try to save dogs. They will pull the dog with THEIR 501(C)(3) if you meet their requirements. Personally, I do not want just anyone to be able to adopt and they must have at least a basic rule to try to give a dog on death row a second chance. Please read the entire parapragh above to better understand. It is not fair to take the first paragraph and the last paragraph to make a statement like you did.

WHY is he still on the site if the owners got him are we sure they have, or is this just what the shelter is saying, I am terrified they will kill him I am in the UK so I can't help PLEASE someone make sure his owners have him back.

I doubt anyone would say he was picked up by his owner if not true.

Oh I see, Let's all check and make sure though, he is so cute, and we cannot let him die. I would take him but I am in the UK, so I can't, they wouldn't let me and the flight could kill him with the shock.

I'd like to know more details, was this just a "lost" dog that they were going to gas in a week? This means that this could happen to any one of our pets.

Hi that is a good point and a worry, I guess if our babies are microchipped it may prevent this from happening ?

That's another thing, some people have said that their local pounds don't even scan first, I think this should always been done, as soon as they find a dog, but apparently it isn't in some places. Chip companies say they will give scanners out for free, so money shouldn't be an excuse.

That is awful, forgive me for stating the obvious but I thought that is WHY we have them mircrochipped, so pounds know who they belong to. I am lost for words, it just gets worse and worse ....

Most shelters don't have scanners and I think that's a crime. The counties should always make sure the shelters have what they need in order to save lives. How shabby of them.

I never asked how long they had Reggie before I took him. I do know that a person found him and put up photos of a found dog and no one came for him. So would that count for the time in a shelter too? I hope not, 1 week is not enough time!

I think this varies state by state, I guess we should all try and learn what our state's policy is regarding this.

It varies from state to state and also from shelter to shelter. Some are sticklers about the laws and some try to hold longer.
Some of them euthanize after as little as three days. :(

That is just awful, what chance would an owner have of getting their lost dog back.

I know, and another problem is that many people won't even turn dogs into the pound for this reason.

If the dog traveled far, not much. But, in that case, it is a slim chance anyway.

I tell people all of the time...first thing to do is to flood the area the dog disappeared in with signs! Put a description and pic if possible and a telephone number....as large as possible!

Then, call shelters in the area....and call them EVERY day! Sometimes a dog will end up in a shelter days later and the shelters do not always keep track of who has a lost pet. Just keep calling!

OMG, I hope someone takes him home soon... too bad Im not in NC!
