I do have Baili's paper's and she is registered AKC. But she is not going to
be breed and is our's :) just to love! I agree, I have learned so much from YT!

I forgot to add Gus has papers. But in my search for my red female, I don't care one way or the other. Small, red or blond, female, and most of all healthy!

Many breeder sell limited AKC for several personal reasons, most people will abide by the spay/neuter contract for those who dont then they dont get the AKC papers. I personally release the AKC papers to the adoptees before receiving verifable proof the kids have been spayed/neutered. If you dont have the papers it becomes far more difficult to register them with other optional registries. For those determined to breed without being honest with the breeder will be forced into one of the lessor registries. CKC takes very little to register most any dog. If it looks like a purebred doesnt mean it actually is and CKC will accept a document from a vet stating the dog is a purebred then send off 3 pictures (front, back and side view) with the vets statement you have a papered dog.

Mine have all their registration papers and it is ok with me . I also have their 5 generation pedigrees and I find it extremely to research the ancestors behind them .

A limited AKC registration means you can't participate in AKC performance or conformation events. If bred, progeny will not receive AKC registration papers. Used to be that a breeder would hold back registration papers until the puppy buyer provided proof of spay/neuter in some instances. AKC rules provide for the papers to follow the puppy and they would not honor those breeders' verbal agreements. It was necessary for the breeders to have a signed contract explaining why the papers were being withheld before AKC would enforce it. Then some years ago they introduced the "limited" registration to solve the problem. Now the breeder has the option of providing a full registration which confers all privileges to the puppy buyer or the limited registration. Limited registration can be converted to a full registration at any time with the breeder's signature.

The Continental Kennel Club (CKC also stands for Canadian Kennel Club and that's an entirely different story) simply keeps a database. They collect the fee, make entries into the computer and print out a certificate. As far as I know they have no breed clubs, host no shows or performance events, and they are strictly a for-profit entity.

AKC is the only registry in the USA that's not-for-profit. As many of you know, they have employees in the hurricane afflicted areas of the country and are participating in dog rescue and assisting local breed clubs.

AKC is also the only registry that inspects breeding kennels for records and conditions. The inspectors have the responsibility to report unacceptable conditions to local authorities and suspend their privileges with the AKC. They perform spot DNA testing of puppies and parents that are on site. These visits are most always unannounced.

If someone applies for CKC papers, that's exactly what they will get. They still won't be able to register puppies with the AKC, so what's the point? I'm not sure how that keeps the competition down. Maybe you can explain. The AKC is the premiere registry, in my opinion, puppies eligible for AKC registry command premiere prices.

Capone has papers even though he is nuetered. I would have bought him either way. I like the fact that I have informaion on his family tree and can justify that he is a purebreed though. His papers just sit in a file cabinet in the office anyway. That is about the extent of how important they are.

No one answered my questions. How does the AKC know your dog is purebred?

Papers are only as good as the honesty of the person filing them. All registries trust the applicants are filing truthful information.

I like to have papers (AKC, ACA... etc).... I breed Yorkies.

OK then that answered my question. Papers to me dont seem to be so reliable so I don't see why they are so highly regarded.

I think it has to do with the generation backround. I have it for Princess & Mandy. But Poncho isn't papered, he was saved from a back yard breeder. :)

Paper's are important to REAL Breeders, I just wish the Back yard Breeder's knew
breeding is to improve & keep the high standards for the breed.
I went to say hi to a neighbor last week, we were just talking and Princess being in heat came up, (her dog ran out and came over) She said great, do you want to take Nikki home. He's samll but he's a mix breed, not the stud I would ever let Princess mate with. What was she thinking???? Not that I don't like mixed breeds, I love all puppies, I just don't want my baby to mate with just any mate.
Besides, her mate we already have set up. I 'm just waiting for both of us to be ready. She's only two. :)

AKC does not guarantee that you dog is a purebred, they will only register a purebred. Many safeguards are in place within the AKC registery which makes it more difficult for breeders that may attempt to pass off a mix as a purebred.

Breeder honesty is #1

Pedigree plays a role enabling you to investigate the lineage via the help desk or the stud book. When in doubt request a breeder investigation.

DNA testing plays a role, again when in doubt request an investigation (at a cost) as to the validity of the claimed sire and dam.

As CJ mentioned AKC is the only registry that does random spot checks, visiting the breeder, not only inspecting the kennel conditions but assure the proper record keeping is being done...

Nothing is fool proof, AKC is only as good as the information sent or aquired by inspections.
