cobys becoming wayy to over weight help please? he's not even 4 monthes until the end of oct, and he 3 lbs and everyday looks like he's gaining weight i dont want a fat puppy just healthy.. i was giving karo syrup too replace nutri cal runs out too quick and its 14 a tube here but hes eating royal canin puppy 33 and hes getting too over weight for his age .. can someone help me please also he's parents was only 4 1/2 -5 lbs both full grown? |
I may be wrong, but I have read in old posts that owners have switched from Royal Canine because their puppies were getting overweight. Someone else may have better suggestions. Good luck. |
by giving him nutrical or karo syrup every day you are also supplying him with a lot of sugar. does he need these things? has he ever had a hypogylcemic episode? he's 3 pounds, i would think he should be fine. You are the one feeding him, therefore you monitor the amount of calories he gets everyday. perhaps you are feeding him too much food, combined with karo syrup and treats? |
If he is eating that well he does not need the karo or nutrical. I feed mine Royal Canin and they don't over eat. I would suggest that you feed him smaller amounts several times a day and when it is gone it's gone, he gets no more until the next feeding time. Does your vet think he is overweight. Puppies should be a little fat. Mine are 3 pounds and they won't be 4 months until Nov 2 and I don't concider them overweight. |
I have to agree with the above poster and ask what your vet thinks about his weight? Remember it is very possible for him to wind up being bigger than his parents. |
3 pds isnt big for a 4 month old puppy, why do you think its BIG.. my puppy is 5 pds now and she weighed in at 2.7 at her 12 week check up.. I think I am confused because just last week you said he was sooo tiny nothing fit him. And honestly since you bought him off the internet how do you really know what his parents weights were? If I remember correctly they told you that Cobys brother was posted on the website but they had completly different birthdates , so I dont think you should trust them.. Looking at Cobys pictures he does not look over weight one bit , he looks just right!! I see an excellent vet and they told me to free feed my puppy till she was 10 months old.. And if you have a petsmart near you they have nuracal for 8 dollars a tube.. Im pretty sure there is one near you in Walpole |
i have petco in walpole, at petco its 14 after tax the nurti cal and petsmarts in braintree ma.. i just spoke too the vet and she said she dosnt believe that's correct cobys parents couldnt have been 4' 5 lbs or he's going too be way bigger then them.. how ever shes going too talk too cobys doctor.. because it might be time too take him off the nutri cal if he's eating that good or it could be the food he's eating well i'll take a new picture of him close up he has put on some more pounds i'm pretty sure since this past weekend petco said he was 3 lbs well the vet stood on the scale then held cobys and said he's 3 lbs..also all the clothes i have fit him now that was way too small he went from a size xxx small to x 1 ... its like over night he started getting real big |
thats what i've been doing free feeding him but he's too old now too free feed he'll be 14 weeks the end of this month so he's still 13 weeks now |
Puppies tend to go thru a pudgy stage where their tummies feel fat in comparison to their bone frame. This will constantly change as they grow, he may next grow taller and not seem as plump as he feels now. These growth spurts will go on over the first 6-8 months or so. He is a healthy weight for his age, and don't get too fixed on expectations of his adult weight. Yorkies vary, regardless of the weight of the parents. As others have said, you don't need Karo or Nutrical if he is eating food ok. |

the parents weight doesn't dictate the puppies weight. you can have parents that weigh 5 lbs and get a puppy that weighs 14 or 3. doesn't matter. again, if he hasn't had a hypo incident by now he's probably not going to have one. as long as he's eating well he doesn't need the nutrical or karo syrup at all. standing on the scale with your dog is not an accurate way to weigh something that small. so the 3lb weight the vet gave you is probably not accurate... |

I free feed all of my dogs, the puppies and adults. Yorkies do not tend to over eat. He is going to be however big he is going to be. Under feeding him will not make him stay small, it will only cause health issues. I agree with the other posters, puppies, like children go through growth spurts. They get pudgy then they grow, then the get pudgy then they grow. |
well yea he did have hypo remeber the seizer he had when i first got him because he went into Hypoglycemia well he was like 10 weeks then |
thats why i was still giving him nutri cal and gave it too him in the first place.. so that why i called the vet too tell her i dont think he need it anymore because she said too still give it too him on his last check up with her.. she hasnt seen him since he's done alot of growing.. the last vacc he just had was done with petco because i find them too be way cheaper them our vet and i only like too take coby to her if he's sick or i have and question i need answer... |
Try New Balance.(chicken and rice) |

My dogs, somedays they eat every crumb, and other days there is some left at the end of the day. |
I don't think you can over feed a puppy just like you can't really over feed a child. If they are hungry, they are hungry, they go through growth spurts and some weeks they will grow more then others. I think you should stop worrying about how big he is going to be or get, he is a pup and if hes healthy be happy! |
Just a little worried that the post you made (quoted below) is the reason you worry Coby is getting too big:confused: Do you only want a Tiny?? I honeslty think that is the case here. :( |
no i dont want tiny i just didnt know how big he was suppose too be at this age more so worried if he was getting over weight and i was feeding him too much which the vet told me yes i was feeding him too much so i need some help thats all too much weight thats not healthy for anyone one just as too skinny not healty? |
How much does he weigh and how old is he? |
I think you should leave his food down for him so he can eat when he is hungry, and not give him the karyo anymore.. He is going to get how big he gets, you cant stop that, He is a puppy I think you are misplacing getting "fat" with getting bigger as in growing. |
well petco weigh him and she said he was 3 lbs but she also weigh him on the scale with her, his vet weigh him today and check him she did say he 's putting on weight fast and it was because of the nutri cal so she removed it and she also stated wellness would be a better food for him because its all natural.. i dont care if cobys big i just want him healthy and she did stated if he stayed on nutri cal nad the royal canin he would get over weight and also i was free feeding him she stated once the pup reaches 2 lbs they need too eat 3 times a day i didnt know this so he was taking in too much calories his vet said hes 2.8 lbs |
Well thats a great weight , Ill bet he will be around 5-6 pds... thats just perfect.. I guess I never really thought about weight because I cant even remember how much she weighed when she was younger, I just know first appt she had was 2.7 or 2.8, she is 10 months old some where around 5 pds and I still free feed her.. Puppies are busy bodies and will pick all day, my puppy still picks several times a day.. didnt you say you had children.. Id be glad he was getting bigger! |
yes i have a 12 year old but she will be 13 next month thats it so cobys the baby in our house : ) well hes my son because i dont have one and i dont plan on having anymore kids lol |

2.8 is a good weight for him. |
Make sure that he gets plenty of exercise. Good luck to you with helping him maintain a healthy weight. |
Payslee weighed 3.69 pounds at her last appnt, which was last thursday. She will be four months the 23 of this month. She eats when she's hungry and plays nonstop. I'm fine with her weight and the vet said she's healthy and she seems healthy to me. I think she's at a good weight but thats just me. =] |
i really wouldn't restrict a three month olds food. let him eat when he wants to eat. and be happy that you don't have a picky eater! |
