omgoodness im gonna strangle brownie if the barking doesnt stop!! its all day ive tryed everything !! HELP !!! :mad: :mad: :mad:

Have you tried canine pheromones?

My dogs are barkers and I get them to stop by squirting them with a squirt gun.I know it so annoying when they bark constantly.

try comfort zone spray, the plug-in didn't work for me as well as the spray. Actually it didn't work for me at all (the plug-in)..

I tried the plug in too, no luck! Hallie loves getting squirted with the bottle, Simon hates it so that works for him! I have been pulling my hair out as well lately with the barking at squirrels. I found just today that Hallie hates the dog whistle I have (it was like $2.00 at Petco). So I've been walking around today with a water bottle and a whistle! ;)

A whistle is a good idea thats the first time Ive heard that one. I might try that myself.

I know I would like to know if it works too. My dogs are outside barking like theres no tomorrow and I dont feel like chasing them down with the squirt gun.

whistles dont bother him at all little girl i watch had one he thought it was a toy not much bothers brownie ive also tryed the can with pennies and nothing he didnt care he also thought it was a toy lol

Okay - when he's sweet, which is often, he's ours - but when he's driving me nuts, which is MORE often, he belongs to my husband!!

Barking is not too hard to train out. Check the training forum on this site, we've had a lot of very info-packed threads on the topic.

Squirt-guns and rattle-cans, whistles and shouting, clapping and carying on, these are things that might interrupt the barking for a few moments, but I have never heard of a dog that's a barker being being cured like that. I certainly wouldn't expect a terrier to change their life-outlook based on such things. When you do these things you might even be driving them to such behavior without knowing it. When a person shouts, yells, and carys on like that, the dog thinks that you are joining in the barking. If their barking is fear oriented, then being scary certainly won't help. If it's just boredom barking, then interacting with them for their barking is a reward. Many people have chronic boredom barkers here, who have trained their dogs to bark longer and longer and longer. First they TRY to ignore it, but eventually they always respond. They wait longer and longer, but usually respond. Eventually the dog knows that if they keep barking long enough, you will come out and entertain them. They are like kids in that they will do things to get your attention even if it's punishment.

To really make your dog no longer a barker, you need to address the reason that they are barking all the time. They might be afraid, insecure, or too secure and be exhibiting dominance, they might be fiercly territorial due to not knowing their own territory.

Here's a few basic tips to let you know what kind of stuff we talked about in the training forum on this site:

To teach your dog to "hush" teach your dog to "speak". Dog's are good at opposites. Teach them to start barking on command, then develop a shut-off word. Start with rewarding three seconds of silence on your command and then build it up. This is great for the boredom barker.

Some dogs bark because they are overly dominant. If they feel the house is THEIR house and you are the pet, they will guard it always. If your dog knows you are in control, they are less likely to throw the alarm all the time. This approach really worked for me and Chewy. To address this, read about dominance and evaluate your dog.

Look into clicker training and read more online about barking behavior. There are treatments for every barking dog that don't involve a cycle of mutual antagonism and grief.

that is great info i know brownie only barks when someone is passing which isalot since we live right near a deli GRR he hates all people brownie knows the word quiet very well be only knows it when he wants to he is very obidient just not with the barking once he throws his "fits: its hard t ostop he carries on even after the dog is gone 10 mins later hes still wineing brownie deff knows this house as HIs house i knows hes not bored but his favorite thing to do is sit in the window and i cant not let him in there since its very easy access

Well, from some of what I have read, that might not be true...I have read that when a dog is barking they litterally shut down certain senses to large degree and become practically def. That's why training to bark, and then hush, in tandem like that, teaches the dog that barking is short term, temporary, and to keep his EARS open for when he's going to get a treat. It kinda helps prevent that barking-blinders effect.

Of course you could test this and see if that's what's going on...I don't know a single Yorkie that doesn't know the word "Walk" or some variation thereof.

When they are deep into a barking fit, mildly say "Wanna go for a walk?" when they are not looking at you. If the dog fails to respond to that then you can see that they aren't hearing you. If the dog does respond, then go for a small walk, but only if they sit quietly while you put on the leash. Either way you learn something.

:confused: what exactly is in those phermone sprays?? i've seen those but im a lil iffy about getting one .. what in that makes the dogs not bark.. is it like a drug??

A pheremone is a scent secreted from an animals glands that cary a message or emotion. Sex pheremones are emitted by bitches in heat, and that is how males are alerted to her coniditon and respond in a physical way (most of the time). At the same time, motherly pheremones convey comfort and security. A dog smelling this will feel at ease and peacefull (most of the time).

Sounds silly but I broke Chloe by pulling onto my lap, whispering in her ear to be quiet, no barking and rewarding her when she was quiet just a few seconds. She will bark if she hears something at the front door but will quiet right down and she does not bark at squirrels and other things like that.

I could NEVER use that method ...poor Brownie - I hope he stops barking - I'm no help cause I'm too busy laughing at the crazy ones who love water - you'd think a squirt in the face would shock them into stopping - but nooooo....it's in invitation to play in my house

We have to sneak out to water the lawn and plants if we don't feel like bathing him! And yelling at him or making a loud noise - fagetaboutit!!!! He starts barking like he's having a conversation with you!!

Oy! What's a girl to do... That's why I'm curious about these phermones....
