Grrr, my first post and I'm furious! We brought home a 11 week old male yorkie last Friday night. His name is Thor and he is a complete sweetie. Has been doing great potty training and my girls (9 and 4.5) are doing great with him also. Here's where I get pissed (sorry)! My 9 year old calls me today, she has Thor outside to potty, he's on a leash because I want him under control when he's out front. A neighbor that has had yorkies before came over to introduce herself to Thor. She tells my daughter to make sure he doesn't jump (I've already educated my daughters on the fragilness of these little dogs) because she had a yorkie paralyze herself jumping from the bed. The woman goes on to "show" my daughter that these little dogs get hair in their ears and it must be plucked out. She frickin plucks my puppies ears right in front of my daughter. Who in the heck does this sort of thing? I am so upset that someone would do this. Grrr. Not only that but my poor daughter is scared to death that Thor is going to become paralyzed. Oh, not so happy right now! I love this forum and I've learned so much by reading other's questions and answers. Thanks! |
Hello and welcome to YT!!! i am so sorry that your neighbor upset your daughter so much! :( Sometimes people just do not think. |
Hiya Its not nice when people tell us how to raise our kids, but I am sure this lady was only trying to be helpful, and there was no malice intended. Maybe you could indirectly say something if you meet her in passing someday. |
I will also add that while this lady was plucking my new baby's ears, he was crying and yelping. Oh so ticked! |

Maybe best not letting the children out on their own with the pup until you can speak to this lady. |
Aww she was just trying to help. She just came on a bit too strong. |
She had no right to touch your puppy. What nerve. Your daughter is right to be upset. I would have clobbered her. So sorry. I think the lesson she has learned is that some people are just idiots. I don't care if she meant well. She shouldn't have touched that puppy. I would be livid!!! I mean she just picked the dog up and started to pluck his ears. Is she crazy!!! |

Yes, she's a neighbor, lives about 4 houses from us. We talk about once every two or three months, but she is not someone I socialize with on a regular basis. If I need a cup of sugar, I would probably go to 5-6 neighbors before knocking on her door...even before she plucked my Thor. I'm absolutely appalled that anyone would think being helpful in this manner is ok. Fine, tell someone about hairs needing plucked, but just doing it? Really? She was "educating" a 9 year old girl, not the parent or owner of the dog. She traumatized two of my kids with one pluck! |
I'm still with you pville!!! There is no way she was right. Oh because she's a neighbor she has rights. Sorry she was out of line and you have every right to be angry. I wouldn't want a relative in my own house telling me that their ear hair needs to be plucked and then just goes ahead and does it  No way. Did this woman ever hear of boundries. She didn't even have a right to pick him up. What if SHE would have dropped him. Coudn't just say "oh what a sweet puppy" like normal people do. ??? |
It could have been worse. What if a vicious dog confronted your nine year old daughter while she was in the front yard with the puppy? I don't feel your neighbor had the right to touch your puppy, but it could have been a lot worse. Just food for thought. |
Our two labrador retrievers were out with our daughter and there is no way a vicious dog would have gotten that far into our yard. In fact, we've lived there for three years and have never encountered a vicious dog. Your food for thought was junk food! |
i think she saw something you had in common and was trying to be helpful you are supposed to pluck that hair to keep their ear healthy try not to over react...i know its bothersom when your kids are involved and not u |
Don't say "what if". That's ridiculous. What if a stranger pulled up in a car and took her daughter and the dog. Let's just scare everyone to stay inside. Don't go off subject. What if it was your puppy? People don't touch my kids or my dogs without first asking. What if it was a baby??? would it be alright to just pluck it up out of the stroller and cut it's hair??? Sounds silly yes??? Your saying her daughter shouldn't walk in her front yard with the dog??? Who would have thought this stranger (neighbor) would be so stupid as to pick this dog up and pluck it's ear hair??? WHAT?? Maybe we should open a thread and ask peoples opinion as to whether or not she was out of line. Maybe ask what would they think if it was done to them??? I bet there wouldn't be too much compassion for the neighbor who "meant well" |

I don't understand. I am a very compassionate person. But I don't see the "meant well" attitude. |

That statement was really rude, but I'm glad everyone was safe. After reading your post, I was under the impression that your nine year old daughter was alone, without an adult present. (Since she had to call you on the phone.) Sometimes, things can happen so quickly...you never know. I'm not the one who handled your puppy; don't be angry with me! And, things could have been worse! |

i think you are getting a little irrational about it she plucked the hair out of the ears, thats all that happened in the op story no one was hurt...the groomer would have done the same thing or the vet... i think she shouldnt have done it with out the adults permission but no crime was committed... geez let me add to the op im not trying to discredit your feeling at all...somethings make people uncomfortable where it might not bother another, doesnt make your feeling any less meaningful |

Are you serious? You throw out that a vicious dog could have attacked....and give me food for thought and you thought my response to you was rude? We live in America, in Idaho in a very nice neighborhood, children in some areas are still safe in the front of their homes without a parent present. While my 9 year old was in her front yard alone, her dad, was less than 20 feet from her working from home in his home office. I was not angry with you, but you went way off topic with your response/advice. Maybe I should just go find a new website to share regarding my sweet new Yorkie Thor! |

Second. What if it was your puppy??? I think a more neighborly thing to do was to say that she had a yorkie too and if mom wants to talk she should stop by. |

Hope everything works out for you, wherever you go. |
i have seen several post on yt about plucking the inside ear hair... i think you are taking it way to personal....op didnt sound this upset as i stated before i think she should have had an adults permission...but no damage was done...if it had been my dog..and she was being educational and had several yorkeis with her and since i know about the ear plucking it woudlnt have bothered me...i dont sweat the small stuff...specially when it isnt your own |
Life is too short to worry about a few PLUCKS. We have a Yorkie that will be rescued tomorrow that had Acid poured on his back... |

How was Prince's Mom supposed to know that you have two labs to protect your daughter? I think that as a newbie, you should appreciate any advice you are given and not snap on a well respected member of this site! It is not going to win you any respect  |
Welcome to YT....I'm sorry I forgot my manners. You will learn so much on this site and we are happy to have you on.....Lissette |

aww poor poor thing!..this is something to get mad at! |
Okay, we're talking about a puppy that has been in our home for less than a week. He is still in a transition period of getting to know his new family and is learning to trust us. This neighbor has had one yorkie in the past. As in my original post, her dog was paralyzed (it jumped off the bed and broke its back). She does not currently have yorkies. I do not care if the hairs should be plucked, I will cut them for what it is worth with blunt end baby scissors, after our little boy is comfortable in his environment. However, never, ever should you touch another persons human child or fur child and make them cry. It is unreasonable to think this is okay. I understand there are worse situations out there for a lot of puppies and dogs. Unfortunately, I am not responsible for those situations although I do have empathy for any living creature that is mistreaten. This was with my (and my daughters) experience with someone who crossed boundaries with my property and which broke my daughter's heart to witness. If anyone does this, they should have their hands slapped, and certainly will in my presence. |
I don't usually post on topics where people start to get hostile..but I had to post here, I agree, don't sweat the small stuff! There are bigger tragedies going on in this world, I don't think this neighbour had any ill intentions and I don't think the children will be scarred for life or anything :) Please enjoy the forum, there are wonderful people on here:) |
I really can't believe you guys are not more compassionate to this lady's puppy and her child. She said the dog was crying. She wasn't asking for advice here she was just venting. I can't believe you agree that it is ok for someone to pick up your new puppy and pluck out the ear hair, because the vet ar groomer would do it anyway!! What?? I don't understand the logic. I agree that the poor puppy with the acid down it's back is just a terrible thing but that doesn't mean that this lady doesn't have the right to be upset. Her new dog and her daughter were upset!!! I've been here a while now and I have never seen such lack of compassion. |
