Puppy Financing
 

I just read a story in our local paper about being able to finance a puppy. Petland and other pet stores will let you make payments on your new friend because they know some people can't afford to pay $1000.00 to $5000.00 for a pet. If you don't make the payments they won't repo the dog but it will go on you credit report. If the dog dies, well then you get a 25% discount on the purchase of a new dog.

I hated seeing this news story. That is just one more way to keep the puppy mills in business if you ask me. If you can't afford to buy it in the first place, then you can't afford to take care of it either. :mad:

I can understand your concern. I have mixed feelings about this personally. We placed a puppy last year with a wonderful family who did not have the cash on hand to buy a puppy they fell in love with. We fell in love with the family and offered them the puppy at a very low price with payments. It has worked out beautifully.

I'm anxious to hear the valued opinions of other YT members. Thanks for bringing up this topic.

i dont agree with puppy stores but i do wish breeders did this if gOD Forbit something happen to my dogs they would get the most expensive vet treatment i just can not afford to spend alot on a puppy all at once i can give everything a puppy needs and i think its not fair puppy prices are going up by the day i think if breeders did this then more people would stop going to puppy stores

Payments are not an option with me, I have the belief if you cant afford the kid then you cant afford the proper care. As well we all know these pups are not inexpensive providing the quality essentials, what happens if they cant afford a vet bill? Hesitate taking them to a vet because of finances? The slightest delay in the proper care can risk the little ones life, I for one could not live with myself if one of my kids were lost because of someones inability to pay for quality food or care.

I take deposits shortly after the crucial 2 week period, then the adoptee has 10 weeks to pay for the baby in full.

I think that was great, what you did for that family. I think under the right circumstances, helping people buy the dog of their dreams is not a bad thing. I do agree that Pet stores offering this is only making the Puppymill problem worse, but if a responsible breeder such as yourself can help someone have one of these wonderful little things in their lives, I thinks it's fantastic. These dogs are uber expensive and I've always thought it was a little sad that some people who would be superb yorkie parents may not ever get the chance just because they cannot afford to spend $1,000+ on a puppy. Just my little opinion ;)

i agree with feminvstr. If you can't afford the pup..i think you should just wait until you are financially able to get the pup and pay for shots, etc.


Edit... i don't mean for this to come off rude!! I just believe in not buying anything unless you can pay it off right then..that's just how i was raised..

Thanks. This isn't a business for us, it's a way of life. Finding just the right home can sometimes mean you don't get a financial reward, but seeing that little boy so happy and cherished with his family is plenty of reward. We have been prepared to underwrite whatever expenses they had with him and let them know they never had to worry about taking him to the vet. We'd put it on our charge card and they could pay us back. We give him his shots and paid for his DNA profile.

People who are breeding for a business just can't afford to do these things. We don't make a lot of money breeding pups and we don't have a long waiting list, but we do have some really great friends with our pups and that has been well worth the effort.

I think a breeder taking payments is O.K. Good breeders take the time to make sure their littles ones have good homes, even if the buyer offers more money a breeder will turn down someone who would be bad for their babies. The pet stores don't care, they just want to do anything to make a buck.

Not only pet shops, but many pet breeders who maintain colonies of breeding individuals.

That why I said Good breeders. I must admit when I got Asia I had not been on YT. The breeder I got Asia from might be considered questionable. They only had yorkies both, but they were kept outside in a kennel. The lady I spoke with did not ask me many questions and I did not know alot of the questions I should have asked either. I did get to see momma and all the others she had. The kennel was very clean and she did have a nice little fenced area for them to play outside.
Asia is a very happy and healthy 8 month old and I would not trade her for the world. But I do know the next time I will have a lot more information thanks to YT.

there was a scam that ran through Oregon last year where as the potential adoptee has their child call to ask questions, after a multitude of calls and questions she tries to endear her self with you asking for your address and wanting to come and visit the pups, they appear the be the best family ever and have a vet reference. The child warms up to a pup begging for the baby, while the parents ask the breeder if they could make payments because they only get paid twice a month and hadnt saved enough or were just running a bit short. They assure you they can provide the proper care for these little guys you fall in love with the Ozzy and Harrett and especially the daughter. The breeder agrees and takes all of the pertainent information, they make a cash transaction, two weeks go by and the payment doesnt arrive the breeder calls only to get an answering machine, tries again to no avail, drives to the address that was given and they dont exist.

I have talked to several breeder here in the northwest that has experienced these calls and a few have actually been taken never to receive payment or find the pup.

No matter how hard we try to screen the potential adoptees, sometimes people can fool you, I for one will not take that risk. I have a very strict adoption process and I do check references and request three.

It is not a money issue when placing a pup it is the adoptees ability to pay and provide the proper care on a moments notice!

I actully believe payments are an excelent option for some. If I was to breed I would take this into consideration for a variety of reasons such as for most people including myself 1200 dollars was a huge chuck of change to put up at one time. I actully waited 3 years for my tax return to finally do it. I would have loved the payment option that some might have, that way I could have had a baby sooner. And just because someone cant afford that amount up front should not be a factor if they will be good parents to the furbabies. I have in fact not only taken great care of my dog and feed her the right kinds of foods, I get all the vet care she needs. For exmample I cannot think of many people who would have spent 1500 dollars on an ally cat to give birth to her last kitten, I did, because I loved her, and to me it wasnt a question. Although I did here from my vet many would have just put her and the other kittens down, however I paid for an emergency c section on a Sunday morning (3am) plus paid for care of her babies for the first several hours while mom was in recovery. Now, I did have to make payments on that as well, but I made them and never questioned weather or not I should take her in. To say that because someone cant afford 1200-1500 up front for a pup means they wont spend the money on a vet, is in MHO discrimination. I know there are many like me, and would never put our babies in harms way, the problem is some breeders dont care they care about the money. If I knew someone would make a good mommy, and trust me I do interview before hand, I would make arragements for payment.

I'm not a big breeder. I currently only have 1 breeding female...female period. I took deposits and actually one member here made out payments. It worked fine for me but I don't know that I would do it again. We try to find the best families for our furbabies but if a family asks for a discount or for future payment askers, I don't know that I would do it again. I completely trusted the member here and since the pup was in my possession till payment was made in full, it wasn't a problem.

No, we don't make a lot of money off of these puppies but I'll be darned if I'm going to take a loss either. Every little bit goes back into my dogs and I'm going to pay a larger stud fee this time so I want every penny back...plus, I'll be keeping one to enlarge my "stock".

Kimberly is right...there are so many scams out there. People trying to pull at your heart strings but business is business.

We not only have to look out for ourselves but also other reputable breeders...friends.

i agree my cat got sick over night and 800 dollars later my cat still died i didnt care how much it cost i give my animals the best vet care and everything else they need
