Not all breeders would check out the new homes for their babys!
I just might have to look you up, next time I get a new baby.
And you're right breeding is not a business, it's a love for the breed :)

Well, I guess I'm just in a different financial bracket than some of you because I do not have $1500 laying around. I feel VERY VERY fortunate to have met the local breeder I found that let me make payments on my Yorkie. I paid on her over several months because she was, in fact, as someone mentioned a LUXURY, so I set aside whatever I had extra to pay for her. I took care of her better than some parents take care of their human kids. I still stick to what I say.... just because you can't afford $1500 at one whack does not mean you can't/won't take care of your pup.

Sorry if I come across ugly, but I guess it just hits a nerve with me that some people look down their noses if you have to save up for an expense like that. I would be totally offended if a breeder questioned whether I could financially take care of my dog or not.... I would hope that they would have enough sense by talking to me and meeting me of what my intentions were.

I do commend the breeder for "interviewing" new homes... more should be done to breeders, as well. For example.. that recent post about the breeder selling the $500 yorkies at 5 weeks old.... WHAT A SHAME. I have seen shady breeders and I had enough sense to run -- breeders should have enough sense to weed out prospective owners.

I just had to reply to this post out of personal experience. I joined this forum after my precious little Sophie passed away in February. She took ill suddenly and the vet bills were over a thousand dollars, it took every bit of 'puppy money' I had saved. I put back a little money every month for puppy emergencies and had been saving for a LONG time. Needless to say, after she died, all my money was gone and I was desperately lonely for a new baby. I even got sick myself and had to have heart surgery, even less money now to get a baby. I was sick at the prices and knew it would take me a year or more to save up enough money to get a baby but I was so sad and lonely without Sophie. I was fortunate enough to find my little Lida at a price I could afford after months of heartache and fortunate enough to have a friend that would take me the 850 miles to get her. Since then, Lida got very sick and I was lucky enough that her vet took care of her at a reasonable price and will ALWAYS let me make payments now. No, I do not have money, I am lower income with thousands of dollars owing in hospital bills. Yes, I am a responsible, ultra-loving mommie who found myself in a bad situation. Not being able to come up with a thousand dollars for a new pup had absolutely NOTHING to do with the care and love that pup would get from me. I love my little Lida and would do anything in the world for her even though she only cost $200 and is not papered and probably isn't even a pure yorkie. You only have to find yourself mourning for a lost baby and unable to come up with the cash for a new one because you've spent everything you had trying to save the one you lost to really understand how desperate you can get over a little one. To say that someone wouldn't take care of a baby because they don't have the money on hand to buy one at over a thousand dollars just isn't right. God knows I take care of mine.

Thanks so much for sharing this. This thread began with a discussion about a pet store offering to finance puppy sales. I still don't know how I feel about that, but I know there are people out there like you who would make a puppy the center of their lives and are the kind of homes we look for for our puppies. If we'd had a puppy for you at the time, I would've been honored to not only cut the price but take payments or do whatever it took to get a pup in your arms. So glad to know you're on this list.

What people need to understand is that the price and terms are all up to the breeder. Some are hard asses and just want their price. It's just business with them. Others will consider options. I'm so glad you found your new baby. She's a very lucky girl and I'm sorry she wasn't one of ours.

I'm so glad you posted! I am very sorry for your loss, Sophie is up in puppy heaven watching over you and playing with all the other puppies, maybe even plaving with my Roxanne. You are right,The love you have to give a pup, out weighs every thing else. I'm so glad you have a new puppy, I'm sure you both have lots of love to give one another. Papers are important only if you are going to breed.The love you have for each other is what is really important. May you both be Happy & Healthy Always. :)

I got my yorkie from Petland...after a month of searching and trying to save up money for a puppy. I have always wanted a yorkie all my life and I know that it costs a lot. I was not aware of puppy mills before I joined yorkietalk.com and after reading threads about puppies being sold at petshops, I really, really got scared and everyday I pray that my pudge won't end up sick. Well, as of now he is very healthy and we are loving him every minute.

Anyway about my Petland experience...I did get the financing (it says on the door) . I was only planning on checking how much puppies are being sold or if they have a yorkie. They did, and he's 50% off (but still expensive for his kind). The sales people were not aggressive to make a sale, they took out the puppies that I want to check out and play with and they all were in healthy conditions. But the yorkie...he marked me :D as I've said I wasn't planning to buy anything that day and my money was not enough yet. So, I asked about their financing...They are financed by Beneficial, 21% APR and your option on 12 or 24 months to pay, so for him for and few starter kits for puppy would be about $100 a month. Before I left the store because the puppy was really expensive, I gave the puppy a second look on his cage...and he looked at me sad...I wanted him. I went to lunch and did some thinking. I went back and got the puppy...
He is up to date with his vaccines, as part of warranty and agreement we get an initial free examination (1st 5 days upon purchasing) to a local vet for any health risk, physical or hereditary problems (my puppy is very healthy, thank God).
And if the vet find any problem it stated in the warranty to notify Petland right way for appropriate course of action.
If the puppy have hereditary and congenital disorders, Petland may elect to treat the puppy through their vet; a replacement puppy; partial refund or pay 25% of any incurred expenses.
If the puppy dies, as part of their "Limited Lifetime Warranty" Petland will provide a 25% discount toward the replacement of the customer's choice of puppy.

The only thing that i did not like about my encouter with Petland was their starter kit which was so expensive, good thing I have a friend with me that knows prices of crates, and misc things for your puppy. I am kinda grateful in silent way (after reading horrible stories of Petland store from other states) that I got Pudge via financing, and I kinda thought that I saved him from there.

Well I didn't have the $1500 at first to buy Ruby but I knew I really wanted her so crambling very hard I came up with the money and she is now mine. Guess what I was broke after buying , she made a huge hole in my pocket. Then came all her illnesses, URI, Surgery, etc... adding up to about $4000. I did indeed always provide the necesary care for her without a doubt when she needed it immediately. I think payment plans are a very good nice idea from breeders not from brokers. To those who think you can't afford the pup you can't afford the care then I think this is very selfish. I did afford the care of my baby she is still being taking care of and will continue to be. Yes, I am in debt now but, her care comes first. So that quote is just not very accurate. Also right now I wish I could have a Biewer but I don't have $2000-$5000 to pay for it bjut this doesn't mean I wouldn't provide the necessary care. Or you mean to tell me that a Biewer requires more care than a Regular yorkie. Payment plans are a very nice thing to offer for those who can , and the descion on wethear one individual can or can't provide the care should be analized on a partiular basis for each individual .

I am very sorry I made this statment. I was mad at the article in the paper and reading how 5 college students had to combine their credit and get 2 co-signers to buy a puppy. How can that puppy belong to more than one unrelated person. Who takes care of it after school is out. That just showed to me the local Petland does not care. The local animal shelter gets overloaded with a lot of animals that are left by college students when they go home for the summer. I'm just really afraid that puppy is going to be there too.
I know a lot of people would do any thing to take care of their dogs. Even those without a lot of money. I did not mean to offend anyone.

I've personally had a rough year in my personal life, and have had to help support my whole family financially. I haven't bought myself ANYTHING for months. There was no way I could ever afford Coco, but the money came together and she was mine. Most of you that know me well, know that I am the best mommy that Coco could ever had. Her breeder calls me ALL the time to thank me for taking her, that she was soo happy that her little one went to a good home. It took me some time to get the money together but I did it. But that doesn't mean that I can't afford to take care of her. I felt a little offended that some were saying that if you can't afford the price of the dog, you shouldn't own one because you can't take care of it. I have spent whatever money I have on clothes for the winter, organic food, the best shampoo's, treatments, and play toys. She gets the best of everything. If she needed care, I would sell my car to give it to her if I had to. I have an emergency credit card for her vet bills and I got health insurance for her when I got her, to be covered. Now when you buy a puppy, most of the time there is no option for a credit card, it's usually cash or money order. Coco has playdates EVERYDAY and every paycheck I get, even though I'm broke, I set aside some money to buy her something that will make her happy. Even though I'm financially strapped from my personal problems, I dont' think it makes me any less worthy to have my Coco bear or even my future 2nd dog. :( I know that no offense was meant, and we all have different opinions, but I just wanted to share my experience.
