IF he is eating well, gaining weight and otherwise healthy, there is really no reason to keep giving him the Nutrical. I do not give it automatically to all pups. I would try him without, just watch for any signs of hypoglycemia. I would also not use the dark Karo or Codliver oil -- sounds like it would be too likely to cause bowel trouble. I would go in and get some more Nutrical. You need to always have it on hand when you own a toy dog just in case they get sick or otherwise hypoglycemic. I bought a postal scale from ebay, very inexpensive and it has been great to weight the pups. I doubt your vet will charge just for a weigh in. I know mine does not. |
Puppies DO NOT need to be given nutrical as a matter of course. Has your dog had a hypoglycemic episode? If he's 12 weeks old he should not need this anyway. In my 20 years of raising yorkies I've only needed to give honey or karo twice |
Just out of curiosity, why would you need to give him nutrical on a regular basis anyways??? If he's eating well and is not sick or hypoglycemic, he probably won't even need nutrical. My vet once told me that if you don't have nutrical at home and get into an emergency situation, try corn syrup. |
That was an automatic at my Vet's first visit with Lexy since she was only 1lb and already 14 weeks she made me come home with a tube of nutrical to have on hand. I think it's better too then corn syrup because its more of a gel then syrup and I have it where it's immediately accessible to just squeeze out of a tube and my kids know they can go grap it on an emergency for me and know how to give it. She was never been diagnosed with anything to require it but when she would get sluggish I never wanted to take chances so I gave her some and called my Vet...most cases she was fine later. I give Carly some now that shes prego about one dose a week, just to make sure she is getting the proper nutrients since all it's just a vitamin, I leave our food out all day in an automatic feeder so I don't keep track how much or when they eat...they eat when hungry. |
