No cuddles from my Yorkie. Ninja likes to follow me everywhere but he doesn't like to be held or picked up. When I reach down to try and pet him, sometimes he'll back away. When I try to pick him up, he tries to get away. This couldn't be normal...he use to cuddle when he was a baby. In fact, he use to sleep on my face when he was a baby! But now he'll sleep at the foot of my bed and then climb down to his own bed. Does it have anything to do with him not being neutered? Or is it because he's young and hes too hyper still? Is there something I can do about that or is it just his personality? |
Mine follow me every place I go. But both of mine don't like to be picked up:confused: It's just the way they are:rolleyes: They do what they want, not what you want!! |
Some are just more independant than others. Suki my first yorkie was like that as a pup. I can remember thinking all this time Ive waited for a yorkie and she doesnt even want to cuddle. Shes 7 now, she cuddles and loves but when shes in the mood, not when you want her to, but she is like a shadow. Shes the one that has to be on my lap anytime I sit. Hang in there he might get more cuddlier as he matures. |
Zoe is kind of like that. She will , cry as soon as she hears our voices come in the door, follow us everywhere - wants to be right with us - but she is definitely "Miss Independent". LOL When she feels like "blessing" us with her affection - it's on HER time at HER will, not the other way around! :) |
My Apple is exactly the same way, and it really is good for me to see that she is very much like lots of other yorkies out there...Being my first yorkie, I was totally surprised when she didn't come to me, when I called her, want to sit on my lap 24/7, and be totally submissive to me, like my other pups...It really upset me :(...She's almost 11 months old now, and things are better...I absolutely adore her, and she adores me, but it is on her terms, not mine...Sometimes she wants to sit on my lap and cuddle (if she's really worn out), and most of the time, she lets me walk out in the yard and pick her up, w/o running away...I am fortunate, however, that she is not an annoying barker, she's housebroken, and very outgoing w/everyone that comes over...I guess it's just a yorkie thing  |

Looks like it's definitely a yorkie thing. Sushi likes the cuddles and affection only on HER terms not mine. Whenever she sees "appropriate" she comes and DEMANDS cuddles. But if she's not in the mood and I pick her up to love her, she looks like me as if I stink! :) Gets all wriggly and tries to get away. Sometimes she just gives me a quick "kiss" to get me off her case :) |
My Angel was like that, the only time I ever saw her let loose was if I took her upstairs for some one-on-one time, then she'd bouce over the bed, throw her toy around and play chase the hand under the blanket. But infront of the other dogs its like she was just going through the motions of being a dog. She only relaxed when her mother passed away & she became more expressive and loving. |

Gatsbys like that too when i got him i thought he would be so demanding on my time but he just wants to lay at his end of the couch or bed until he wants to lay in my lap |
candy is exactly like this, shes getting a little better |
molly is the same way. so when i want to pick her up i say down molly an she will stop an get down an then i can pick her up. but its like she is sayin hurry up an put me down. she loves to lay on my lap but some time she lays along side of me. she decides what she wants not me. can u call that spoiled???? |
Glad I am not the only one that has this happen to them. :p My Fancie will sit there and look at me like....pick me up....and when I reach down she backs up. Although the minute she thinks we are going to bed, she will race us up the stairs to beat us to the bed where she will not move till we get up in the morning. :) Now Ryle dont really like to be picked up, but he does like to sit next to you wherever you are, he is a lap dog most definatly. He also goes to bed with us, but he wakes up very early. Nice to know that I'm not alone in wanting to cuddle with my pups, I just have to wait till they are ready.:p That's OK though. |
I share your pain . Bonnie will not even look at me sometimes when I pick her up! Too much of a bother I guess. |
Zekie does not like to cuddle either Zeke does not like to be picked up or held. He does like to be close both in bed and when you are sitting down. He likes to be petted, but not hugged. He is very independent and has been right from the begining. We got him at 8 weeks and he is over 1 year now and has been neutered. He sleeps a lot during the day and is a holly terror in the evening. |
Yep..Riley is the same way..Im so glad I read this!I always thought he was scared or skittish or something.Im glad to see its must be a yorkie thing..He loves to sit with us and be petted, but when I pick him up he gets all stiff, and wants right DOWN!. at bed time he will jump up on the bed with us once in awhile. but most of the time he will go lay under the bed,. they are funny, thats for sure..lol |
Suzi can be like that too. However, mainly when she knows it is time to be brushed! Little stinker tried to hide, and makes me the enemy. She is very loving though, on her own terms. She kissess faces all the time, and is so excited when someone comes over. She is all over them . Suzi like her space too . I let her be, she will come and lay right down in my lap , and rest. However, I know she prefers to be the one in charge ! If I pick her up, or my son, she does not like it too much. She is very independent . |
Good to know that I'm not the only one. Ninja's my first doggy so I don't really know what to expect. I thought I might have done something wrong when he was a baby or something!! Its super surprisng and cute when he does want to cuddle though! Makes me feel loved :P |
Lily will sleep with us and she is my shadow but nobody can pick her up unless she wants picked up!! She acts like a cat other than her BARK!!lol |
Lace was sort of like that when she first came to live with us. She would rather sleep in her crate and not be bothered. She is going to be 9 in December and I figured it was because she was older and just didn't want to be messe with. Slowly she has started to want up on the couch and just lay next to you. She also barks when she wants to be let up on the bed. We took her on a hike a few weeks ago that she loved, so everytime she sees us put our tennis shoes on she will bark at us to be cuddle...so we take her with. :D Smart cookie...;) |
first time on this web site. but i have 3 toy yorkies lexi, laci & larri my 2 females are very much cuddelers but like every1 else it seems to be when they want to. my male backs away when we go to pick him up more often then not |
I like some of you, am so glad to see this thread too...I thought what am I doing wrong?...when I go to pick up Shay, he sometimes backs away, like he is afraid of me...which I could not undertand, since he is treated like the lil prince here... Shay is my first lil Yorkie, and I just love him to bits!!!! and it was bothering me. So, thanks for bringing this up! |
When genghis is sleepy he is cute widdle cuddle muffin. However when he's awake he'll only come to an extent. Out of arms reach. He'll come check to see if you have treats and if you look like you may have treats he may have time for you :) and he'll come a little closer do whatever trick you want ask for more and then be on his merry way. Though he is a sleepy head for at least 80% of the day :) |
hi all my little girl is my shadow, she wants lifted constantly thats my fault:rolleyes: in the mornings she is wrapped in my dressing gown when i am wearing it and i get on with the morning chores lol, but my boy hates being lifted like u all say ONLY when he wants, when i lift her she stands a sertain way as i am left handed but when my dh lifts her he has to turn her the opposite way [hope u can understand what i mean] lol, the yorkie is sooooo smart :D |
Well, I can see I'm not the only one to call my baby "my little shadow"! She follows me everywhere! Just like everyone else, she loves to cuddle, but on her terms. She "cries" to be picked up to lay in my lap anytime I'm on the computer (like now, LOL). She's so content! Love my little cuddler! |
They are all different...maybe they get more clingy the older they get? my Pixie has got clingier now she's a bit older (2) she will sit on my foot when i am doing the dishes and likes to follow me from room to room while i'm busy...when i sit on the sofa she has to be next to me or she will nestle in my lap with her little head resting on my arm. |
