Help! 6 Pounds @ 3 Motnhs! Help! my female yorkie is 6 pounds at only 3 months old! IS this normal? Did she just have a monstrous growth spurt? 3 weeks ago she was 4.2 pounds. Although she is registered with the DRA, i am worried about a purebred issue. My breeder claims the sire was 5 pounds and the dam was 7. I went to the vet to see if they had the birthday wrong and she said by judging the teeth coming in, she is right about 3 months. any suggestions???? |
That sounds about right if she weighed 4.2 lbs at 2 months. I believe that she will be much bigger than the parents. Unless you had a scale with you to weigh the parents, the breeder can tell you anything. You'd be surprised at how small an adult dog can be until you put them on a scale. Is she healthy? |
WOW .. looks like you got a big one lol sorry i really dont have suggestions.. but would love to see pics of your baby :) welcome to YT :wavey: |
Welcome to YT! I have no clue what could be the issue. Most likely the breeder lied to you? How many times do you feed your baby? I would try to feed it only 2-3 x's daily while it's a puppy...try not to free feed for a little while and maybe walk him and give him some exercise. ? |
sometimes the pups grow bigger than the parents. Chachi is 7 1/2 lbs and his parents were 6lbs and under. |
wow ! thats big im sure shes adorable good luck and just remember theres more to hugg ! |
Do you have pictures of her ? |
Yep, she is perfectly healthy! She has quite a "puppy belly" but the vet said this is normal, i was fearing she had worms or something, but she doesn't. Would it be in my best interest to get a DNA test?? how much is that?? I know the "breed standard" is set below 7 pounds..can't show a chunky one! I have heard of this formula, it is online and also in "yorkshire terriers for dummies" book: "To calculate a purebred yorkie's final weight, double their weight at 3 months." This means she will be 12 pounds?!?!?! Something seems very wrong with that |
12 pounds isnt that big my yorkie is 18 pounds and he was only 2 pounds at 2 months |
she has her own website: www.dogster.com/pet_page.php?i=196645 |

Please forgive my ignorance, but I'm unfamiliar with the "DRA registry". Can you help? Thx, CJ |
yeah, it's some "generic" registery that the breeder chose. That is why i am most concerned because the breeder seems shady!! www.dogpapers.com i just applied for registration online and they havent emailed me a notification yet! I hope my $45 on my credit card didn't just go out the window! or worse, $450000!!! i hope this site is real, and the breeder didn't just make it up. I have the sire and dam numbers...it seems real... |
my baby girl is nearly 8months and weighs 9lb both her parents were smaller, i dont see how it matters what size they get they should be your baby small medium or large, unless you want to breed yourself why do you want a DNA if it turned out there was another breed as well would you get rid of her? now that worrys me wendy and rosie :rose: :yorkiesar |
My father's Yorkie weighs 14 lbs. & has weighed a lot since she was pretty young. Not sure what her parents were like, but I've definitely heard of larger Yorks before. JM |
oh no! My baby is my baby! i don't care if her hair grows out curly and ugly like the yorkie poos i pick on!! i would never give her away or attempt to bring her back! My only beef is that i spent literally thousands on a dog that ended up not what i was going for in the first place. If the breeder tried to pull a fast one on me, that is not fair and i would like 50% of my money back. Not ALL of it, she is definately worth something (millions, if you ask me). But come on...that just wouldn't be fair. it makes me feel more at ease that you guys have heavier yorkies, because i had never HEARD of a yorkie over 7 pounds until now! |
And i have considered breeding, because i'd like to keep one baby for myself. it would be nice to tell the future parents of the other babies "THIS IS NOT A PUREBRED" or "THIS IS A PUREBRED". It doesn't matter, it's not about money, i would just like to know for the record. |
My pup was 4 lbs at 8 weeks, 5 lbs at 10 weeks, and 6 lbs at 12weeks. But now is only 7.2 at 20 weeks. they can go through growth spurts. I called him my little line backer because he was stocky and solid....well just recently he hit another growth spurt and is now tall and skinny. you just never know. I don't think the DNA is necessary. In the way two regular pups can have a tiny pup. Two standard dogs can also have a huge, by comparison, pup. If you were planning on showing I am very sorry....there is still a chance it could stay under 7 lbs, but it doesn't sound good. |

12 pounds doesn't mean that she is not a purebred one . My friend Audrey have a 3 pounds girl , the mother is 10 pounds and the father is 9 pounds . Her breeder asked her to have Sybil bred to a smaller male so she could start a breeding partnership . Audrey didn't go for the craps of her breeder and have has Sybil spayed . |
I have an 18 lb girl and a 10 lb girl, both sisters/littermates from the same parents. The parents are 6 and 7 lbs. Go figure!!?? But I love them, no matter what size, as you do and will, I'm sure! :) |
DRA is Dog Registry of America. I got a beautiful certifcate with a seal on it from them. One you could display however the CKC - Continental Kennel Club gave a lousy certificate that looks like a little gift certicate!!! I have been lied to by every breeder I've ever dealt with regarding their expected full grown size and I've had to fight for papers every time!! I think it's ridiculous and I'm glad I won't be looking anymore and if I ever do I don't think I would pay what I did and I won't care what size or if they have papers because its just not worth it! Don't get me wrong I wouldn't give any of mine back and we love them to pieces but I definately am fed up with my experiences so far! All I can say I guess in retrospect it was worth it because they are all healthy! |
so do you like the DRA?? i also requested a pedigree, is that just as frame-able? |
Benji is 12 lbs... at 2 years (so it doesn't mean its not a purebred), and Chloe is 6 lbs and 9 months. Chloe's parents were both 4 lbs... she is short and has a big belly. I love the bigger yorkies.. don't have to worry as much. |

1 Attachment(s) Stomper, as many as you may know, is registered and is 15 pounds at 10 months old. I think he is still growing... His mother was 5 and father was 7 pounds. Stomper looks like a yorkie, acts like a yorkie, but just a little heavier than most! I question if Stomper if full breed, but I really don't care. I don't plan to breed him though. If this helps, he was 3.3 pounds at 8 weeks and just kept growing. Poor guy...I was told he would be 7-8 pounds full grown so I only feed him for that weight. Now I know why he was always hungry!! :( Poor thing. Now I feed him for a 15-20 pound dog since he is such a big boy! Got to love him. Here is a recent pic of my cutie pie! |
puppy If you want my advise...let her eat all she wants, she is a puppy and need to eat. She is already genetically programmed to be what she is going to be..a big girl. The breeder pulled one on you..you said thousands was spent. How do you value a Yorkie? Tough one..but most reputable breeders would say $500/700 for her. I fix that price because she is an oversize, down earred, pet quality girl not for showing or breeding..just for major loving and she fits that category perfectly. If she is not AKC then I am not sure if DRA even requires DNA..I think only AKC requires it be done..and then it is at the expense of the owner..I was told it is $500..could be way off. |
Customer-Driven DNA Complaint Policy Effective July 1, 2002: Any AKC customer who questions the recorded parentage of a dog or litter may submit a complaint in writing to the AKC requesting DNA testing. The complaint must be accompanied by a deposit of $500.00. If the allegation is sustained the deposit is returned. If the allegation is not sustained, the deposit is forfeited and becomes the property of The American Kennel Club. In cases where parentage is shown to be incorrect, AKC will work with customers to correct the registrations of dogs and litters when possible. The responsible parties will be billed for the DNA processing costs and registration correction fees. Registration services will be placed on hold until payment is made. When corrections cannot be made, the necessary registrations will be cancelled. The AKC disciplinary procedures will apply to exclusions discovered as a result of this policy This was taken directly from AKC.org. |
Capone had the same issue. He went through a huge growth spurt very early. Our vet told me the same thing as far as doubling his weight after a couple months and it turned out to be true for us. He is 9 months of age and 13 lbs. This is a purebreed, papered dog. I was so upset when I found out that he was not going to be small at first. I got over it pretty quick though. It just seemed like he kept growing and the vet assured us he was not overweight, infact he is very athletic. He was already nuertered, which was great because we have no intentions of breeding or showing him. The bonus on having a bigger Yorkie is they are not as fragile. We love our little guy so much and get tons of complimants on him. |
FWIW The AKC certificate isnt all that beautiful or lovely. The Pedigree\'s are even pretty plain .All of mine have been akc except for one that was double registered Akc/ckc. Bonnie |
