Im going to give in to Ace.... Well Ace is now 9 months old and he is the most finicky eater ever! We never tought him to eat table food and I have been standing my ground on having him eat the right food but he is soooo thin looking! He is barely over 4 lbs and I could have sworn I saw in like shaking (almost seizure like and it was just his leg) while he was resting. I feel like he is malnourished. He will definately eat what we are having especially chicken!!! IDK...what do you guys think! |
I wouldnt give table scraps but you can homecook if you give suppliments |
Once you start with table food it is really hard to get them off and it really isn't a balanced meal. I had that problem with Cali when she was little and fed her cesar's just to get her to eat until she was older. I found that California Natural canned lamb and rice usually appeals to picky eaters. |
There is a book called Cooking For Dogs by Marjorie Walsh. When you read what they can eat you realize it's just healthy eating that you can eat too. I see nothing wrong with small dogs eating people food if you give them the correct healthy items and balance that they need. It's cost effective, taste better, and he will probably be happier and healthier with it. A Yorkie is not a Wolf so raw meat is not good to me and the bacteria would cause for more illness. I believe that Yorkies and many other small breeds have become so domesticated and in need of human things for a quality life that good food should be put on the list, not just loving attention, clothing, and medications. |
Have you tired natural balance Dog food rolls? |

I dont give him anything that would hurt him (chicken bones, raw meat, etc) But more like if we have baked chicken, or cheesy broccoli rice, or spaghetti. He will eat that and I dont ever see him eat unless it something we eat!! I think cooking for him is an option and i will definiately check out the book. Thanks!!! |

You're welcome! He sounds like my kind of little guy! A guy with good taste and a food connoisseur :) |
im bad, i give lexi some table scraps, but its ok i watch what i give her. |
Cheesy broccoli rice and shaghetti are not good for him at all and I am pretty sure should be in the classificatoin you have for things that would hurt him. Raw will almost definitely not hurt him, whereas the sodium alone in cheesy broccoli is scary. |

I cook the cheesy brocoli rice myself. My husband has to have a low sodium diet so I make sure to limit sodium in anything I cook. As far as anything else I give him, I definatley know that some of it may not be good for him but not eating and being very thin is as well so....IDK. Thanks for your concern though! |
I give Timba some table food sometimes... few pieces of baked chicken, sometimes carrots, he even likes lettuce, some greenbeans, but most of the time I leave a bowl with hard food for him all day.... he only bothers us when we sit down to eat... but if we say no to table food he will go over and eat from his bowl of food.... |
Be carefull. My Gypsy used to be like that. I am feeding Acana and if I feel that she isn't eating enough, or if she is looking a little thin, I will boil some chicken and rice. I use that and the extra "broth" from it and mix it in with her food. |
We spoiled our first Yorkie Baby by feeding her at the table. Everytime we were eating she would stand on her hind legs and whine. We must eat pretty health though because she lived to be almost 16 years old. We vowed however, to not make the same mistake with Sophie. She eats her kibble from her bowl and lays quietly at our feet under the table while we eat. I do give her raw things like carrot while I'm cooking but nothing while we sit at the table. As far as her leg shaking....do you think she may be dreaming? Jackie and my :littleangSophie :aimeeyork |

I've had the same problem with Oscar. He wasn't eating any dog food I would give him. He LOVED boiled chicken and white rice. I would shred the chicken in a food processor so it was easy to eat. It turns out that he has an allergy to chicken though so I know have him on Natural Balance duck and potato dry food whth some of the NB canned food mixed in. He loves it. I find that the canned food seems to make it more appetizing for him, so I mix the two. I try to feed him when we aren't eating because he will be more interested in our food than his even though we don't give him any of ours he'll stand there waiting. So if there is no human food around he'll eat his own food. Hope this helps. |

Wow...Thanks for your help....very informative! |
Good luck with your doggy plain boiled chicken sounds great |
I'm sure lots of people cheat and give little samples off of their plates. I do with Roxie. I'm very careful though. She eats her own food also. Plus, if it's a night where we are having tacos, spaghetti etc. (definately not on her food list) I spoon out a little bit of browned hamburger meat before adding anything to it. Sometimes she gets a little egg mashed up at breakfast too. This won't hurt her and she loves the treat. She's right on target weight wise for her build. 2 1/2 years old and 6 lbs., I wish I could maintain weight like she does. She's healthy and a few bites from the table haven't hurt her yet. It's all common sense because you don't want them suffering with a tummy ache. As far as not doing it because you don't want them begging, I can respect that. Roxie is spoiled and she's filling our nearly empty nest with her big love. |

Chloe loves it. She won't eat anything else that I put down in front of her. |

But you seem to just want to feed your dog table food. |
I second the Nature's Variety raw medallions. Zoe LOVES them! And I do think feeding them first as a puppy rather than an adult helps, since my Jack Russell isn't interested in them-YET! LOL Another YT member suggested sprinkling grated cheese and/or garlic on them to entice him...so if Ace resisted at first you could try that. But honestly, it doesn't get much healthier or better for them and they're EASY (already pre-measured in 1 oz. medallions). |

That is crazy to me I dont think they should ever eat chessy broccoli rice, CHICKEN BONES or SPAGHETTI. I think you need to watch what you feed your fur baby because of pancreatitis. Maybe you should google pancreatitis and "what NOT to feed your dog" and then go from there to pick a diet for him. |

Oh, I feel your pain. When I first got Fancy she looked a little too thin. You definately don't want to start a bad habit though. I free feed Fancy Nature's Abundance. But you might try doing a search on YT about homecooking. I know there are a few YTer's that do homecooking and maybe you could get some ideas. If Ace likes human food than homecooking for him would probably make him happy! Hope you find something that works! |
Im sure you will stumble across the food he likes soon enough. I kept weighing Tia in the beggining to see if she was gaining. It will put your mind at rest. Don't forget they all have growth spurts now and then too so maybe not gaining yet but you never know lol Any concerns take Ace to the vet and get it checked as you know your baby best . Keep us posted. x |

Petco has coupons on their website right now for $5 off $25 and $10 off $50. If I come home and don't put these up right away and accidentally leave them on my table, my yorkie will JUMP UP on the table and eat through the wrapper. Pushing in chairs doesn't do anything because he just bypasses those all the way. |
