Think twice before leaving a Kong for your Yorkie I just wanted to post a warning to people.... tonight we came home to half of a kong missing. Gracie had eaten the top portion of the BLACK kong toy! It was suggested to us to give her as a way to reduce the separation anxiety that we are dealing with. We have been giving her a rotation of 3 different sized Kongs for months and somehow she was able to break apart and swallow one today. I know a lot of other people do this too. I just want to post a warning to think twice before letting yours have it while you are gone. After hours in the ER vet tonight and now a waiting game to make sure the rest comes out naturally.... Gracie will NEVER get another Kong!! Believe me as I try to comfort Gracie and with a $500 vet bill and possibly more to come... you do not want to put your yorkie through this! |
in this same token. the tuff toys from target can break apart as well. We got Genghis a squeaky rubber chicken only to find that he chewed off both round feet and he had one of them in his mouth at that moment. We're lucky he didn't swallow the little round feet. |
We do give ours Kongs but only when we can supervise them not when we leave. Thanks though! |
Thanks for the warning. Fortunately none of ours like kongs. I hope your Gracie is feeling better soon. My Gracie sends and hugs and kisses. |
I think this happens more often than you would think.... after doing research about it more I have read over and over that dogs ingest them and then they don't show up on the xrays. We were lucky that the vet was able to see "something" that didn't look like food. We are still not in the clear with her. Today is a waiting game to see if she will pass it or throw it up, if not... we go back to our regular vet and do more xrays |
I'm so sorry to hear about poor little Gracie. Thank you for sharing and sparing me of the heart ache. We bring our furbutt home next Friday and I bought a puppy kong for him to have in his crate while I was at work. Now I will NOT be giving him the kong unless I'm home to supervise him. Can anyone give me ideas on safe toys I can put in his crate with him while I'm away? Id greatly appreciate any help and suggestions. Again, I'm so sorry! |

We have given Sophie the Puppy Kong and she mostly licks and nibbles at it. Once the goodie inside is gone she leaves it alone. When we had Hazel though she would completely chew up absolutely anything we gave her. Even the really tough toys. I think it depends on what kind of chewer you have. It's a good heads up to not leave your babies with anything they might be able to destroy and swallow. Jackie and my :littleangSophie :aimeeyork |
Thank you for letting us know. Sophie will not play with her kong. she looks at me like I'm a bit crazy. she is now starting to get her toys and bring to me so I can play tug a war with her. if I am not looking at her she puts them in my hand or start to cry. . |
How scary! I hope she is able to pass it so she won't need surgery. |
I hope she is feeling better :( Thanks for the info because I was thinking of buying one to put in my stash for my future furbaby. May I ask was it an actual Kong brand kong? |
Kong Danger I hope your Gracie will be alright, prayers & good wishes to you both. My puppies have the Kong for puppies, but they only get it when I xcan watch them. Thank you for the warning!:) |
Thank you for all your thoughts. She began to pass them late this morning and we are hoping for the best. Yes, it was an actual Kong brand -- and the one for "tough chewers". She has separation anxiety while we are gone and that was a solution that people said would work. We had been using it for over 4 months with no problem... she usually got the treats out and then ignored the Kong... I don't know what got into her yesterday. |
Tough chewers My little Morkie Belle is a terrible toy destroyer! She does have a Kong that I put a pressed bone in and it helps her hang on to the bone to chew but I take the bone and Kong away when I am not watching her. When we got Belle we bought all these cute stuffed toys. Little by little Belle has destroyed every one. She zones in on one spot and chews until she hits stuffing.... Yeah Belle's favorite. If there is no stuffing, she eats the ears, nose or feet off. She was vomiting one morning and out came this strange looking blue slimy thing. Looking closer at it I discovered it was the ear off her new twist puppy. I have a whole bag of toys that didn't pass the chew test. Belle has almost no toys left. Anyone that knows any really tough toys I would love to hear what they are.:confused: |
